Mozilla’s new Firefox Translations extension is totally offline. Totally. Totally Mozilla offline.

Yesterday I recommended it... What a stupid thing.

Ah... must edit this. I misunderstood your post completely 😂

Really quite bizarre consent management choices. On the one hand, the extension does show these preferences in a new tab the first time it is loaded, on the other hand, the transmission options it shows are opt-out.

Is this a bet on "GDPR applies, but ePD does not"? Not a bet I would take.

It's nice that they do not use the cloud so that it works even on no-cloud days.

Did jargon really evolve to the point where you do not need to write "the Cloud" with a capital "C"?

Maybe they are storing your technical totally-not-personnally[-]identifying information in cold storage?

That last dash in "personally-identifying" is my doing and provided free of charge. Unless they literally mean they will not personally identify the information but will resort to a third-party.

It does ask you right away instead of having you hunt down these options, and it is still in testing.

Whether this is risky or useful for improving usablitiy depends on the details of what "high level" means.

To be fair that's literally the very first screen that comes up when you install the extension. It absolutely should be opt in rather than opt out, but at least they're not hiding it.
