IMHO it fits

1.) Both support tons of different inputs
2.) both are used in hundreds of different products, closed and open source.
3.) Both can be used from to CLI
4.) Both have a ton of CLI parameters.

I would say #ffmpeg has even more parameters you need to know by heart then #curl 🤣

I personally only use curl for very basic things and I only know very few options by heart. It makes those things possible and easy.

Not wanting to diss ffmpeg but whenever I think I need to use it I feel very confused by the large amount of options I apparently need to consider. I usually end up using some ffmpeg front-end such as handbrake.

I'm right now writing a little script for something nice in the retro community. Part of it involved having to add tags to wav-files.

Wouldn't you know it - that's an ffmpeg job.

(exiftool doesn't support writing to wav)
