πŸ” A search engine is only as good as its search index. Even alternative search engines might be using indexes built by Big Tech. πŸ‘‰ tuta.com/blog/what-is-search-i…

I really like @Mojeek tbh but I'd say I get good results less than 50% of the time. I try to give feedback to help whenever I can. I love their "focus" feature.

I also realised we sometimes know on which site we want to search so I created a bunch of alias to different websites and I use them. If I want something about public services for example, I have a shortcut to search on the governmental website of my country.

I have been using Brave Search for some time now and I'm really happy with it. There is this opt out telemetry and a little bit too much AI. But you can disable it and the Code LLM is pretty useful sometimes.

Ecosia because sustainability ist just as important as security and privacy.

That's why Tuta is the best of both worlds πŸŒ±πŸ”’

@Mojeek @jrod3737 A bit late to the party, but great to see a constructive discussion grow out of the comments. Let's keep making the internet a better place for everyone!

Mojeek
@jrod3737 got any examples we can work on?
in reply to Mojeek

@Mojeek One example, I use a website called Refquest regularly. When I type Refquest into Mojeek the results have a refquest.com result as the third result and it’s the privacy page. I just want the main website.

This happens on a lot of results. When there is a direct .com or .co.uk, etc website I get a bunch of stuff from other sites way before the actual site. And the result from the actual site isn’t the main landing page of the site.

@jrod3737 thanks a lot, we're aware of issues when it comes to ranking homepages as the top result returned in the cluster (Mojeek is 1 result/site unless you change clustering in Preferences).

I've raised this as an example of that - something we're working on.

Selfhosted SearXNG, because i like different results from many engines in a clean UI. Many SearXNG public instances are limited in primetime, so i decided to selfhost for my family and me.

For some time now, and out of conviction that we in Europe need our own solution separate from the Big Techs, I have been using MetaGer. Although the search engine is dependent on the indexes of other search engines, #MetaGer is a partner of #OpenWebSearch in order to solve the problem of dependence on the few large companies such as Google in the long term on a European level.
