Are there good non-US alternatives to Signal at present? Asking as a USian with many friends outside involved in this effort - their being a nonprofit without a "paid tier," though, they strike me as an info-risk more than a moral one, with caveats around their willingness to engage crypto. (Meta incl. WhatsApp, Amazon, Xitter, Walmart, etc. can all get in the sun, as useful to boycott inside the US as abroad.)

@samueljohnson Glad you asked. Signal is a centralized service run on Big Tech infrastructure. You can decide to trust Signal as your service provider; That’s absolutely fine and reasonable even. But they don’t allow federation or inter-op with anyone who wants to make different choices.

#XMPP gives you that choice. Don’t trust me to be your server operator? That’s fine: pick a different one.
