This seems like an issue that should get a lot more reach than it has. #Accessibility #Mastodon #mastoadmin
https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/9269
Please help!

Reason: screen reader users only see emoji as their tags! For example:
"colon blobcatowo colon"
"colon drgn underscore 3c colon".
We have no idea what those mean!
Being able to set descriptions for emoji would be a huge help!

While we're on the topic: This is another issue that could really help #accessibility : https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/10313
This one seems easier to implement, but I personally rate the emoji issue higher, since emoji are in much more common use while you're reading your feeds!

I have given both a thumbs-up on GitHub, in case it helps

Did you get sighted help adding emojis to this instance?
in reply to Talon

The moment this gets added, if it does, our emoji dialog will be updated to include!

@enzo that could perhaps help a little bit, but a proper alt text could actually describe what the smiley looks like, not just the fact that it's a smiley.
For example, we have a :dragon_confused: emoji. It's pretty clear what it's supposed to mean by name alone, but it would be much more useful if we also had an actual description to go with it.

@tulpa @enzo yeah. The GitHub description says: "A skeptical-looking dragon", which also means that shortcodes can be misleading.
