Halfway through this latest Radiant Others #klezmer #podcast episode interviewing Zisl Slepovitch & Stephen Naron about their work selecting, arranging, performing and recording music and poems found in the #holocaust survivor and witness testimony at the Fortunoff Video Archive. I have one of the CDs in this series but didn't know all this about how they came to exist. Often these songs were collectively composed in WWII labour camps and recalled by a single survivor.

Just a reminder that today is the last day to register for free virtual participation in Klezcadia, a hybrid #klezmer and #Yiddish festival taking place in #VictoriaBC from June 4-9.
I'm mostly involved as a volunteer but I'm also giving a lecture on June 7 which I mentioned before.

Not sure if this site is well known outside the niche community of researchers of late Russian Empire klezmer. It gives free access to streaming versions of the Ukrainian National Library's reissue CDs of wax cylinders of #klezmer, #Yiddish song, #nigunim, etc. from the 1910s through the 1930s. Most of these were recorded on folklore collecting expeditions in the Pale of Settlement or later in Soviet Ukraine and Belarus. Some very scratchy, fascinating stuff.
