A Misty Morning at the River Brathay

I was out early on Wednesday morning. The forecast wasn't ideal, just v.cold (actually -10C).

I hung around waiting for the sunrise to hit the two oaks in the photo. As the sun reached the valley it kicked off the mist around the water.

Behind the trees a patch of mist is highlighted in warm light by the sun whilst the rest of the photo has a cold mainly grey/blue hue.

This ancient goat willow is half-tree, half-octopus!

It may have been broken by a Cumbrian storm, but is still very much alive - and supporting lots of other life too. One of my favourite trees 💚

The multiple sprawling trunks of an old goat willow, covered in brilliant green moss, lie spreadeagled across a forest floor in late winter like the arms of a giant tree-octopus. The tree lives and has sent up many smaller vertical trunks from the fallen ones. Some pretty groups of snowdrops are in the foreground.
