"Missing Brain Receptor May Hold the Key to Autism"

WTF, NeuroscienceNews? Missing? It says in the fucking summary that it's reduced, not missing, and why do you consistently paint it as some defective form of a normal brain? We aren't the same as you. It's not "missing" OR "reduced". It's just different from you, you assholes! You left out the phrase "relative to".

Heaven forbid people be different from each other! That might lead to...diversity! Scandalous!

So cool. If you zoom in on the upper right, you see a little crescent. That's the Martian moon Phobos.

Zoom in again and you'll see a star next to Phobos. That's Earth! That's home.

Seen from Mars by NASA's Curiosity rover.

If you're looking for something new to do this year, I just posted the last edition of the audiogames.net monthly digest. I haven't posted about these here in a while though I probably really should, because there's a lot happening. This most recent one covers all blind friendly game releases I heard about both on the audiogames.net forum and off throughout December and even into the new year and boy there was a lot to cover. A lot of games got modded to be accessible, including both entries in the hand of fate series as well as the Phoenix Wright trilogy and that's just the tip of the iceberg. There's also rhythm games, some christmas vibes, a bunch of games for iOS and so much more. forum.audiogames.net/post/9424…

Happy New Year - Gelukkig Nieuwjaar - Einen Guten Rutsch - Bonne Année - Sǎn Bɛ Sǎn Bɛ - Mwaka mwerú mwega!
"One whose seeds have not sprouted, does not give up planting!"
This is a Kikuyu proverb about perseverance, resilience,, and not giving up on future potential despite a lack of noticeable results so far. This felt like a good New Year's motivation to post. Basically, you've got this!

I was just thinking about the old days of Google since it came up, and I realized something. My favorite era of Google, around 2010 or so, was a lot like the Fediverse. On my homepage I got important news, a preview of my emails that I could expand if I needed to and the weather. I'd get jokes of the day, and then I'd get random stuff like articles on the history of cheese or the world's oldest forest. It was a very peaceful routine I had every morning, like reading a newspaper but more fun.

So that's 2025. Honestly when the year started I didn't feel great about what was to come, and I feel like this year's been harder than most, but I'm Beyond grateful to all the friends I made along the way who helped me get through it. I sometimes think to myself "do I really have anymore room for new people in my life?" And somehow, the answer is always yes.

Particular shoutouts go to @bscross32 @McOi @JessicatheVIArtist and @jonathan859. I also of course am legally required to mention @gallagher123123, we've known each other for so long we're practically brothers at this point. I love you all, and thanks for everything. Here's to a great 2026!

I want to use the last day of the year to thank the community here on Mastodon.

Every day, I learn things here that are worth learning. The discussions are, by Internet standards, very polite and focused on the issues.

But most importantly, I see people here having a voice that they do not have in traditional media or in algorithm-driven social media.

That makes Mastodon extremely valuable, and we should all strive to preserve that.

The year 2025 has been a tough one, and I have little optimism that 2026 will be easier. We will likely see a further rise in authoritarianism, fascism, and racism.

To stem the tide, we must work together. My wish for the coming year is that we continue to see others fighting the same fight as allies, even if they have different priorities for where they invest their energy.

But please take care of yourselves. Do not feel guilty about time spent on self-maintenance. Keep this in mind: You can only help others if you are first in a position to do so.

Best wishes from Kiel, Martin

P.S. Special thanks to @jerry for maintaining this instance. I really feel "at home" here.
