Today's poignant Pratchett quote.

"What kind of man would put a known criminal in charge of a major branch of government? Apart from, say, the average voter." ~ Terry Pratchett

I am not hopeful. I am quite sad.

Elon Musk essentially bought the election when he bought Twitter.

Journalists could have left Twitter, and had it go the way of MySpace. Instead, they continued to legitimize it, thereby giving it life.

For the next four years, decentralized social media will be needed – if only as an alternative to the faux-progressive media that seek to control the public square.

The world is becoming more and more authoritarian, and we need an antidote.

Want to leave the US?
Here's how you can move to germany, even if you have no official credentials (like a university degree) or job that can get you a sponsored visa.
Germany is not perfect. We have our own fascism issues, but we didn't just elect someone who openly paraphrases hitler as supreme leader.

Step 1: Start studying for german B1 language level. Duolingo can get you there, I also heard good things about babbel and other apps.
Step 2: Find an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships in Germany are weird compared to the rest of the world. It's a mostly full time job with a bad wage that is supposed to train you how to do a job. Finding one, if you have B1 language skills, entitles you to a work permit for the duration of it, completing one entitles you to a settlement permit.
I did an apprenticeship in IT, but there's many options. Healthcare is one of the options with the best chances of getting hired and it pays pretty well compared to others. If you don't mind waking up early, bakeries often receive not a single application for their apprenticeship postings.
I would recommend you to not go into the major cities, as their immigration offices are overworked and rent is too high to pay from an apprentice wage.
Step 3: Finish the apprenticeship and apply for a settlement permit
Step 4: Congrats, you can now live in germany as long as you want and work in any industry
Step 5: After 3-5 years (depending on how well you do at work or how good your language skills are) you can apply for citizenship. If you get that, you can live and work in any EU country.

I don't really have words to describe how hopeless I'm feeling about this country right now.

in reply to Jan

@Jan

Hackers, #Infosec specialists and #privacy advocates are going to be very important in the months to come. Please read the EFF's surveillance self-defense guide ssd.eff.org/ and reduce as much as possible the information that companies like Google or Amazon collect about you. Fedi admins and moderators, help us keeping the people away from the online agressors. If possible, make sure the services you use are based in Europe. All hands on deck

Why. I just don't really get it. Why is it like this of all results? I didn't go into today thinking he could possibly win like this. I can't even have the consolation that the majority rejected him this time, because they didn't

I wish I knew. So many people swayed by made up fears they should be able to see through.

Pennsylvania was called by NBC as well. All I will say is margins this time around were not as tight as in 2020, at least where it mattered. And ultimately while calling a winner now is premature before all votes are counted, it also becomes less possible to do the more these margins in states like Wisconsin end up getting called, too. Sorry America, but we may have just failed ourselves, now time to learn from those failures, we're the "pick yourself up by the bootstraps" type country. #USPol

I'm also not saying miracles don't happen. They can. Presumably there's a chance for this to go to a 269-269 split, depending on Wisconsin, Nevada, and other tighter swing states of what's left, and then the house splits it. I see this as about as slim as looking through the light from above a trapdoor that's 50 feet up, but it's there. I see both sides in this, I get why people are jumping to conclusions but also why there's validity to the path for a victory to be on a brighter history. #USPol

Usa, europa bajona, desahogo

in reply to sara gil casanova

Apropos of nothing at all, did you know that it is relatively easy for Americans to move to the Netherlands under the DAFT (Dutch American Friendship Treaty)? Check out my immigration lawyer's website:

Buenos días desde la Administración Pública.

Otro día con mucho más calor del normal para la época. Sé que no es una buena señal, pero subjetivamente ayuda a llevar el día.

This last issue is because Android Studio— necessary for Android development— is not a Google product. Rather it's "JetBrains"' IDE for "JetBrain's" version of Oracle's programming language. Injected into this like a kind of parasite are two separate programs that make Android work; one of the two, AGP, is developed by Google, and the other, Gradle, seems to be developed by the community. Gradle and AGP are at eternal war with each other. AGP doesn't know how weird their name sounds to me
in reply to mcc

the android toolchain is something alright.

I love (/s) constantly having to ask google to fix nondeterministic output produced by their toolchain (or building workarounds in cases that's possible) to make reproducible builds for android work.

half the time it's bugs deep in some compiler code I have no idea how to even find, the other half is me having to explain to them what their own code is doing so they can apply my proposed fix.
