Thank you for the post! One question has been irking me for a while now however, are there still plans to eventually depreciate matrix.org Matrix homeserver?

I remember someone involved in Matrix org saying that this was long-term goal in order to promote decentralization of Matrix by removing big one central point of it. However no communication since then indicated this being some kind of goal which makes me suspicious of my memory.

in reply to Frisk

@Frisk Oh, excellent question, thank you!

You remember correctly, and we remain committed to slimming down and decentering the Matrix.org homeserver.

A forthcoming blog post will dive deeper into how we are going to do that. Big picture, we'll maintain the server for continuity and ease of adoption, but make _other servers_ much more prominent and invest in things like account migration, portability, and P2P Matrix.

> Element used to subsidize our activity, and still donates upwards of £3M in core development annually

Am I reading well? It's £3000000/year of donation by @element?

in reply to Lutin Discret

@lutindiscret yup; the majority of the Matrix core team is still employeed by Element to work on github.com/matrix-org/*. This works out at a cost of around £3M/y (even taking into account the fact that Element no longer donates its development on Synapse to the Foundation).
in reply to Element

@element @tcit OK but I find it hard to grasp the whole picture as the article mix the foundation cash and the whole ecosystem "asset value". Thanks for the clarification.

£560K to be found 😨

in reply to Lutin Discret

@lutindiscret @element @tcit Great questions, and thanks all for helping to shine some light on the answers! We've already accomplished so much together, we feel confident we can clear the funding gap – but it will definitely take an ecosystem-wide effort.
in reply to Joe Brockmeier

@jzb There is, but it's not terribly discoverable so there's room for improvement on our end 😄

Our RSS feed is at: matrix.org/atom.xml

@jzb You betcha! And thanks for reminding us that we need to make it more conspicuous 😅
