I'm a big fan of @simplex as well, especially due to the lack of MetaData.

Like the ex NSA Chief stated:

"We Kill People Based on Metadata'

One thing to note, as I understand it, self-hosting a node of your own actually reduces your anonymity.

Like Tor, the more traffic that goes through their servers, the more anonymous you become by blending your traffic in with the crowd.

Also, this graphic is helpful for comparison

XMPP. I'm running my own server with the mid-term goal of running a public one.

I just need to convince my relatives to become beta-testers 😂

Physical Mail, yeah it costs a decent amount of money per message and the “servers” have a several day/week delay but once the recipient gets the message it can be erased pretty well by the “delete” button aka a shredder. Jokes aside IRC

For me Threema is king. But Signal is also installed on my phone.

I really love SimpleX but it's impossible to connect to servers when you are on a very strict network... I understand the network-admin and I'm sure he's not the only strict-one, so I really hope @simplex will introduce a solution one day so #simplex can become my number one chatapp...

Another alternative made in France: Olvid. I haven't test it yet.

#SimpleX #privacy
I use Threema, SimpleX, Element and Signal, with Signal being my main messenger. Signal is also by far the most popular with me!
in reply to Tuta

I like Signal, but getting friends to actually use it was pretty difficult. Once RCS rolls out on Apple devices I'll probably just go back to using text messaging. (I live in the US and messaging apps aren't that big here, other than iMessage which Apple people don't even realize they are using)

Olvid. It doesn't require the phone number and it's free (but also has a subscription model). It's also European.

Telegram. Has open API, thus runs everywhere, on anything, and any device (e.g. automation) can be connected to it too. This is totally priceless...😍

Think once usernames are ready to use on Signal, see more people move over to that. Can just share that instead of your phone number.

Haven't tried WhatsApp, so I'm not entirely sure what qualifies as alternative.

For chat in general I use Matrix for public discourse - ala IRC or forums - and Simplex for conversation.

I'm sorry, but Session shouldn't be on this list. For the simple reason that it is a crappy App and is full of errors, it has no relevant functions, it has no appeal. Translational emails are better than Session. It is safe, there is no doubt, but its usability is very limited and it sucks.
