If your distribution doesn't ship Python 3.10, you can install Gajim via Flatpak as well: https://flathub.org/apps/org.gajim.Gajim

in reply to Gajim • • •I want to install the latest (minor) version of gajim for the bug fixes and security patches (if any). With other pieces of software I use, a minor version increase, like from 1.7.2 to 1.7.3, would not require upgrading a core system component like python.
The bump was not to python 3.10, it was to python 3.11:
Yes, it's been out awhile too, but the linux distribution I use has not added it to their distro yet. So you're forcing upgrades on people who want bug fixes that go faster than their own linux distro goes.
I've never had any luck with the flatpak version because none of the plugins are available for it (or at least, I've never found a good guide describing how to get plugins to work in the flatpak).

If this dependency is one of a Gajim 1.7.3 package, then it's a packaging issue. Please let us know which Linux distro are you using, so we can contact the package maintainer. 👍
Regarding Flatpak: Gajim 1.8 will include the OMEMO plugin. For older versions, check out this guide on how to install plugins via Flatpak: https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/-/tree/master/flatpak#install-plugins

in reply to Gajim • • •thank you for the link. The only plugins available in flatpak are PGP and OMEMO. What about the latex plugin, syntax highlighting, url expander.... there are lots of nice plugins for gajim, but none of the cool ones are in flatpak.
I'm using Ubuntu 22.04. If it's a packaging error, that's good to hear!
Gajim
in reply to shrimp eating mammal 🦐 • • •@walruslifestyle you must be using Gajim nightly then, because Ubuntu 22.04 only offers Gajim 1.3.3. Nightlies might break for unforeseen reasons, since they are not stable. Ubuntu 22.04 does not offer all dependencies Gajim nightly needs.
Syntax Highlighting and URL Image Preview plugins have been integrated into Gajim and thus are both available. Gajim's LaTeX plugin has been discontinued due to security concerns.

Okabe
in reply to Gajim • • •I'm still on Gajim 1.3.3 and simply can't upgrade because of the lack of the history manager (separate window to view chatlogs). I'm hoping that it will come back someday and that the old version I'm using will work a bit longer.

in reply to Okabe • • •What functionality are you missing? In Gajim 1.7 you can search, delete, and export messages from within Gajim.
Hund
in reply to Gajim • • •I'm missing the old look. I don't fancy the new Discord-copy-paste look at all.
I don't mind it being there, as long as I can disable it and activate a 'classic' look. Not every user is a teenager, longing for modern crap like Discord. :)

in reply to Hund • • •@hund I'm not a teenager, I don't like discord, but I nevertheless very much appreciate the "workspaces" feature of gajim.
I follow a lot of MUCs, and I have a lot of contacts because I use bridges. Organising chats by theme (family/work/music/dev/nerdities/...) has been extremely useful for me and I miss workspaces in other xmpp clients now.

There is a (large) pad with ideas on how to standardize workspaces somewhere on the internet, and it's not as trivial as it may sound at first.
