To anyone thinking about joining BlueSky, especially artists: everything you post is used to train generative AI models.

BlueSky uses AI to label content for moderation, and to do that they use a company called thehive.ai. If you look through their privacy policy, you will see that they use all content sent to them to train models for all their services, which include generative AI for both text and images.

Update: meow.social/@FluffyDeveloper/1…

#ai #bluesky

An update on #BlueSky and #AI. They have answered to questions and revealed that their deal with hive.ai specifically forbids the latter from training their models on user data. BlueSky have also updated their TOS to be more clear.

See the linked toot from ‪@growlbeast‬ for more details.

I’d still avoid it personally, their “moderation” is nonexistent and I wouldn’t touch anything backed by cryptobros, but for now this is good news :)

A member of Bsky's team has now addressed this with some clarification I feel should be included in the discussion.

@growlbeast Yes another user shared that, and I will still say that her closure looks like a way to cover themselves x3

Regardless, BlueSky still sends all posts and images to a third party that specializes in AI labeling and training, it’s a feature of their network. They could just change their mind and start using the content sent to them, even without the knowledge of the BlueSky team.

Wouldn't that be against our ToS as users on Bsky though and open up Hive to being sued?

I'm an artist and I want people to be talking more about this but I don't know if I agree that this is "covering themselves"
Bsky ToS does state that your data won't be used beyond their Moderation services so It has to be that..legally.

That can change in the future but am I incorrect that it would mean Bsky would then have to change their ToS in accordance?

in reply to growl

it won’t be used by THEM beyond moderation. I don’t think that TOS binds their service providers, but they may have a deal in place to make it so.

You can be sure there is no legal recourse, their TOS is really vague and one team member is not an official communication. Besides, it’s not like other social media companies do things differently.

Bsky does have say in how Hive uses the data Hive gets from Bsky as it's part of the agreement they have with Hive and It would have to be disclosed in our user end ToS.(The ToS states our data is NOT used beyond moderation models, meaning it does not go to the image gen model.)

BSky has been updating their ToS to be more clear about it apparently too.

here's an email sent from the team to my friend regarding some of this:
