#accessibility #a11y Boosting the linked toot. I hope @codeberg can implement an improvement to their signup process, because one of @librecast contributers has accessibility requirements and the CAPTCHA is getting in the way of signup. We're hoping for a solution for everyone, not just on a case by case basis.

Because I do like being on codeberg.

So back in 2020 Codeberg asked for help from the community to help them with #accessibility issues. They need some help in house as the current solution helps them manage the spam that would overwhelm signups, but their moderation team is small. CAPTCHAs aren't very accessible and they would like some help to fix this. #a11y Can anyone help? The linked toot is their request for help.

In #389 it was reported that text editors were not accessible yet. Given that such a central piece of the software it not accessible by screen readers (and spell checkers for the matter) yet, it's very likely that there are other UI roadblocks, too.

There's also a wider question about implementation, because codeberg isn't the only site that needs to implement some form of control mechanism in their sign up to stop them from being overwhelmed by bots signing up.

Our projects are small and often just 1 to a couple of folk. We all have our small fields of expertise and energy levels. How do we help each other to fix this?

How do we ensure that sites are #accessible for everyone? How easy are they to install and support? #a11y

A trick I used to stop bots on anonymous comments on a blog site was to add a field labeled "type Adam" in this box.

On the back end, if the box didn't contain "Adam", it would reject the comment.

It solved 100% of the spam. It is mind blowingly effective.

Obviously this wouldn't work if spammers are writing a custom bot to target you in particular, but it solves the vast majority of the problem, and it's compatible with screen readers.

It's a lot more than just the sign up process; the UI needs an overhaul for a11y. They're awaiting a formal audit, but after identifying the issues they'll need to address them. Hmm I should donate
