5 things white people can do to start making the fediverse less toxic for Black people

privacy.thenexus.today/start-m…

  1. Listen more to more Black people – and amplify their voices
  2. Post less – and think before you post
  3. Call in, call out, and/or report anti-Blackness when you see it
  4. Support Black people and Black-led instances and projects
  5. Approach it intersectionally

The article also has links to anti-racism resources and appendices with a list of common mistkes to avoid and blocklist resources for moderators.

OKAY, #fedimins! I got some good news.

There's an upcoming course with the Anti-Racist Classroom, for Community and Moderation. They had Admins and Moderators in mind for this course.

"Antiracism and Communicating Online
In this two part series, come together in community to discuss and problem solve the challenges of communicating and moderating online with an antiracist lens."

This classroom is aimed at white people. The courses are discussion based, so there's no sequential curriculum, You can sign up as long as you have a commitment to Anti-racism (that means awareness of your actions in this case, and willingness to keep growing)

The first cohort is on the 20th and 27th of December (the two parts, one on each)

You can view more info, and how to sign up here:
docs.google.com/document/d/1O9…

It's a paid course, and luckily there is a stipend if you can't afford it.
You can even donate some money to help other people attend the course.

I took my first anti-racist course with them (their 101 course) back in January this year.

If there's still interest, but these dates don't work for you, because it's short notice or anything else, they will be looking for more opportunities in the new year. So still let them know!
#AntiRacism

I agree, #AntiRacism has to begin with oneself. All of us have been socialized in racist society, as I define racism as an overarching interlocking set of cultural, societal, and economic institutions. We overturn that #socialization as we progress in the anti-racist journey. This requires #mindfulness in observing one's thoughts, reactions, and subtle feelings regarding race. It's not one's fault for being socialized by #racism, but it's one's responsibility to undo it.

An #introduction post:

I’m a #softwareengineer who believes in labour #organizing, #antiracism, #decolonization, and #radicalleft politics more broadly. I occasionally write essays about the intersection of tech and society on my blog.

When I’m not at work I read (#sff mainly, but also any nonfiction about human systems and why they’re so janky), go #climbing, and attempt various forms of #crafting (most recently #sewing and #embroidery). On Fridays I post #memes. Nice to meet you!
