Seit gestern steht eine Cherry Stream auf meinem Schreibtisch, die die gute alte G83 abgelöst hat. Wenn man jahrzehntelang auf so einer Tastatur geschrieben hat, muss man sich erst einmal bemühen, die neue nicht gleich wieder durch zu festes Tippen kaputtzumachen. 😁 Aber es ist ein absoluter Traum auf der Stream zu tippen, und sie kostet keine 30 Euro. Mal sehen wie lange sie durchhält.

@jonathan859 Sie hat halbhohe Tasten, also nicht ganz so flach wie ein Laptop, aber tippt sich trotzdem fast genauso leicht. Man kommt auf ganz andere Geschwindigkeiten als mit der vergleichsweise schwergängigen G83. Habe dadurch bisher auch weniger Buchstabendreher und sonstige Tippfehler, vor allem in Verbindung mit Großbuchstaben am Wortanfang. Bei der G83 musste ich oft nachkorrigieren. Ach und sie ist weitestgehend standardkonform, findet man heute auch eher selten.
@jonathan859 Ich schicke nachher mal ein Audio. Sie ist nicht besonders flüsterleise, im Vergleich zu anderen Tastaturen, aber darauf kam es mir auch nicht an. Leiser als die G83 definitiv.

It's kinda funny how people label 800€ income as rich these days. Like, just FYI it's absolutely not. Just because I'm buying useful tools for myself or stuff for my hobbys doesn't mean I'm rich or sth. I mean sorry for you if you're in a worse situation or something, IKR that's not cool. But I'm working 40 hours a week for this. I have the full right to spend the money I earn from that, no justification needed. that's not rich that's life. Just because someone might have more money doesn't make them rich.

YouTube has started randomly switching German video audio to English even though I can totally well understand German. How the shit do I turn this off? I'm not having YT Premium for this kind of nonsense, especially while the Android app is already as inaccessible as it could get. I know how to switch back the audio track for a specific video, but I have to do that all the time then good bye lol.

The gift is to write code which doesn't sort of work slowly and while drawing attention to itself. Years ago I got one of the first Alexa devices and I was really looking forward to install it. When it arrived and I powered it on for the first time, its LEDs blinking, I felt a panic creeping up in me. It was the moment I understood that centralised collection of such amounts of private data is unacceptable and will ultimately break democracy and free societies. That was the moment I decided to go decentralised. That Alexa device is still here, visible but unconnected. To remind me every day.
Also, I really want this speech engine to eventually support tonal languages. So yes. That flexibility is getting built in early and now, not later when you need to refactor other packs if there's a new format. Nope. Not going down that road. Do the hard part first for the reward.

Currently working on a major refactor. It'll use YAML, human-redable language rules. Data.py will change into YAML also. The driver will no longer load IPA.py but use NVSPFrontEnd.dll to load the tokenizer. It's a major, major change, but one that will save me later headaches.

@Bri Bug: I just tried to create a test poll. Everything was going great until I tried to send, at which point the API cheerfully told me my choices are limited to 100 characters. After that, although the Send dialog reappeared, the Poll option seemed to be gone, so I had to abandon the whole thing.

I rode passenger today on a patrol watching for ICE in my neighborhood in Minneapolis.
Our ride was mostly uneventful, the neighborhood we patrolled has been a target but just not this afternoon. It took me a while to follow everything that is going on, and I felt rather incompetent even as a passenger. These communities are rapidly developing processes and their own kind of professional standards even as new people are constantly joining in. There is a large set of Signal groups covering different portions of the city and into the suburbs, as well as many subdivisions for reactive response. There's a schedule of dispatchers who run calls, formal handoff, other support people to take notes and follow the chat. Drivers are trying to spot ICE, peering into the tinted windows (so many people have tinted windows!), looking up license plates.
There's a protocol that I don't yet understand for what to do when you encounter an ICE vehicle. Several times a day I hear the caravans of ICE and observers honking as they go down one of the streets by my house; protocol is only to do that after a direct encounter and ICE officers leaving their vehicle. I'm not sure what that implies in terms of numbers.
Throughout the neighborhood many corners had people in hi-viz jackets on guard. It was around the time kids were coming home from school. These are being organized separately, by schools, community organizations, churches, and the many ad hoc groups that are popping up block by block.
This is all heartening, and impressive, and also sad because it's not nearly enough. People are doing their best, but their best can only slow down ICE. We can't solve this from here.
we need to teach radio amateur people about how to design a BASIC FUCKING RADIO that just has a port to plug in a computer. i don't want my radio to do aprs. it will do it worse than a raspberry pi running direwolf. and companies make these thin-client kinda radios but then only have a proprietary interface. it sucks
@SirMars i'd be happy to have a good old-fashioned DB nine, or a six pin mini DIN or whatever, even though I don't really like that connector. Not enough radios have them that also try to do too much.
@SirMars I already messed up the connector on that radio once. Had to take it apart and bend the little tab back in place so that things wouldn't just fall out. Yeah, really not a fan of that connector.
If you want a bunch of random noise and chaos in your life, there's a silly thing I put together, called FX Radio.
It's a box running Liquidsoap that mixes several audio players going through a huge library of sound effects, production libraries, and other odd things.
Don't expect anything to make sense. If it does, it's purely coincidental.
This is running on the same machine that hosts @NoiseBox, which throws a random sound at the fediverse once an hour, at a random minute each hour.
Fun fact: This is running on a shelf under my mom's desk. While she knows the box is there, she doesn't know what it does. So, it's fun just for that reason.
Oh man I'd love to know some of the logic that is used. Always seems like 3 or more sounds, maybe panned but maybe not? Seems like usually a texture plus other things? Always been fascinated by this tation.
Basically, it's always three sounds, pulled completely at random, no rhyme or reason, plus a couple of other things. Random audio description things from UK TV shows and musical thingies every few minutes, for example.

Now you're apparently still on that post in the buffer even though it doesn't exist! What's more, you can keep hitting next post, next post, next post, in the invisible interface, and it's entirely silent. Your position in the buffer keeps going up and up and up, E.G. Home. 171 of 162. To recover, hit previous post enough to get back to the real last post, then if you hit next post, it correctly recognizes that you're at the end and prevents you from going off into never-never land again.

Well I suspect I'll have to check there, because the error log says nothing about that. There's a random WX assertion which appears to be about a list index out of range, which doesn't have a bloody time stamp on it, but I suspect I know what caused that one and it wasn't this.
Aaaaaaand, it's blank. Wonderful. So completely random error shows up out of nowhere and leaves not a single trace behind to figure out where in the blazes it came from.

Management basically forced us to to jam everything into ElasticSearch and abandon the normal logs. Elastic was supposed to be the source of truth.

US racism is incredibly durable and self-healing. The rules of engagement of US society, including who is allowed to criticize what systems, make it so that any meager gains can be clawed back.
In the moments after George Floyd, many people thought that the US had changed for the better, and changed for good.
But a lot of us older Black folk said to ourselves, "👴🏿OK! Now what durable improvements can we put in place before everyone goes back to business as usual?"
We've seen this before.
My point is: Do not mistake temporary revulsion prompted by white people seeing what happened to Renee Good, for widespread opposition to the idea of ethnically cleansing the United States.
That would be a mistake.
You have a limited window to put any durable changes in place.
And prepare yourself emotionally for that pendulum to swing back.
Because if you are not prepared, it will smash you, and break your spirit.
Ironically: a lot of Black people were less emotionally devastated by the anti-civil rights swingback, because we knew it was coming.🤷🏿♂️
What would happen if ICE wanted to join the Fediverse? Most instances probably wouldn’t host that account, but some would. The account would be broadly blocked at both individual and instance levels, and some instances would probably defederate the hosting instance. Some folks would migrate between instances based on these choices. All this, I think, would be a good outcome?
Yo, Bulgarian is not an easy language, yet here we are coding it in. Whoever can help tune it, well, it may need some. Good news with it is that it's largely a "what you hear is what you get" kind of language, and with 30 letters, well, seen worse. Bad news? Cyrillic support is hard to code out for the IPA normalizer. Good news? We need Cyrillic support anyway before turning the normalizer into a frontend DLL, which is the next milestone of this project. Why not keep the frontend normalizer in Python you ask? This good for now, but to ship recompilable and buildable DLLs, it's clear that we'll have to do this, not to mention when NVDA goes 64-bit, although for the latter the issue is more embedding Espeak than the frontend need itself

Morning. A couple of questions please if I may. 1. Synchronisation is working well as I said with the Home timeline. But notifications and mentions never works. Can you perhaps make a note of the post which was focused and try and set focus there again when the app is opened subsequently, assuming the post is available of course. 2. AutoComplete. That either isn't working or I am misunderstanding it. So I type part of a person's username and press ALT+A. It doesn't seem to do anything at all. Do I need to populate a database first with those user details? Love all the new changes you've made. I am up-to-date with builds.
@brian_hartgen So I think what I can do is just make notifications/mentions timelines retain their position, but only locally. I.E. it wouldn't save your position between clients. It would only apply to your current configuration. Will this suffice for your use case?

Hi. I have selected to show my bookmarks timeline. It displayed it initially. However, upon a restart of the app, they are not showing. I tried to add them again and it says the bookmarks timeline is already open. But it is not in the list of timelines so I cannot close it. I did try to edit the JSON but that is causing more problems so I reinstated it. Is the only way to delete the JSON and start over?
