Thunderbird for Android 8.0b2 has landed on the Google Play Store and on our Github Releases page. We've removed the existing folder class system, and would love feedback on this change from new and existing users. For more information on the release, see the release notes on GitHub:

Wait, what? I use the class functionality all the time. What have you replaced it with?
In particular, I encounter these particular user stories regularly:
* I want most of my folders to be hidden in most menus and contexts most of the time.
* I need to be able to easily unhide the hidden folders when I need to access one that I rarely use.
If you've removed the functionality that enables these without replacing it with something comparable, that's a huge functional regression.

thanks for deactivating the aggressive telemetry - it is always better to ask the users! IMHO this belongs also to the "Free" in FOSS projects - the freedom to choose if I want to share some data with you - no matter what my reasons are.
Thanks

Will my beta version automatically update to the full release version through the updates from Google Play Store, or will I have to install the full release version, and remove the beta from my devices?
in reply to David R

@houdave You'll need to install the full release version once it is out, and you can remove the beta if you would like - or keep it for future testing!

I updated from 8.0b1 to 8.0b2 without any problem.
I never used the "folder class system" so for me it cool that you removed this feature.

I'm not a big fan of the account selector.

I don't like that I have to select the account and it cycles through the accounts instead of giving me a dropdown to select the account like it did in K9.

Expanding the account list to show the icons doesn't help much since I have multiple accounts on the same domain and the only identifying difference is the colour. Is there a way to customize this?

in reply to Derek McEachern

@derekmceachern Thanks for your feedback! There's also been considerable discussion of accessing the different accounts on the beta mailing list. As far as customizing this, I'll try to find an answer!

@piratenpanda The import only works from the K-9 Mail beta - basically, the import only works across similar versions.

@ryan_harg Hi! This has been a requested enhancement. No idea yet on any possible timeline, but this would be the best place to follow any development: github.com/thunderbird/thunderโ€ฆ

@T313C0mun1s7 This will need to be a manual switch over, because of Google Play Store policies. Current beta testers have been testing the switch from the most recent K-9 Mail Beta to the Thunderbird for Android beta, which is in the blog post: blog.thunderbird.net/2024/09/hโ€ฆ
