Jumana Abu-Ghazaleh of Pivot for Humanity shared an article critical of # in our # linkedin group.

With it the comment that "The Metaverse is basically a # , albeit one that just…doesn’t…end". I agree with the article, though have a more nuanced take on the role of # as described there.

In these toots I'll copy my comments..

The # video is one I have much shared. It's superb in demonstrating the dystopia we wanna avoid having at all cost. The # is a cold, lifeless, technocratic vision that has very little # to it. And that is no wonder, as it has the tech giants behind it that long ago stopped seeing us as people, but merely small revenue generators. To be milked as cattle.

If you have good intentions, but help build the #, then you are like a small butterfly in a huge field of industrial farming, where the ground is dead by pesticides and fertilizer amply sprayed on the land.

I do not agree on your take wrt #, though how you describe it has become how many people have come to see it, knowing it from many ways in which it has been abused.

I started calling that form of Gamification - its evil dark side - as #.

No, # is simpler in concept and very broad. We all use it in daily life.

If you raised children for instance, did you pretend that the spoon was an airplane when you brought it to your toddlers mouth? That's gamification. Or when you packaged a warm sweater in a present you kid thinks is the Gameboy they crave? Which comes as a surprise after that one. Gamification too.

I count myself lucky to be part of the #. With a couple million other fedizens this decentralized # has completely different dynamics to it. Where # is shunned, # are a big no-no, and it is people themself who built the place.

It represents a humane technology field lab of sorts. A place where a unique # thrives, and that has vibes representative to the #.

Where there are big challenges to tackle. How do you build something where no one is in control? What # cohesion is needed to keep things together and collectively evolve the online environment? How do we model social networking online to be an extension of our every day life?

And tackle external challenges. Like the erosion of the concept of "social" by #. Or erosion of # itself by the forces of #. Not to speak of all the autoritarian forces that are wielding tech to dominate us.

My personal # is to work towards a #. This concept has nothing at all to do with #, and likeness is coincidental. The Peopleverse is the human stratum on top of the # that enriches our life with online technology and connects us to our fellow human beings, wherever they are.
