have you considered providing a filtering method by "1 day, 5 days, 7 days, 30 days" and colors of headers and with attachements, as you can find in Evolution and in Sylpheed?

hopefully the tray icons won't be hardcoded. this would allow them to be themed on linux desktops if the user chooses!
