Walled gardens might be OK for plants, but not for email. Did you know our average donation in 2023 so far is $17.44? For the price of a bouquet, you can donate to help liberate email from corporate walled gardens, and help privacy bloom. 🌻 Rest assured, ANY donation amount makes a difference! mzla.link/eoy23_masto

That is interesting. Your average donation for 2023 is about 33% of lifetime licenses of some proprietary email software that have several features and a better UX than Thunderbird. This means that if @thunderbird only makes pragmatic sense if it is free or reaches feature parity instantly and maintains it for 3 years compared to alternatives.

@vartak I guess, it is not the average amount per user. How many users donate at all?
in reply to Nicole Wolf

@nic @vartak We don't have our final 2023 numbers yet, but this comment in our 2022 report shows how many donors we had and how many were overwhelmingly small donors! blog.thunderbird.net/2023/05/t…

Hello @thunderbird, I was donating ₹100 when a popup came up that said ₹418 is the minimum amount. I don't know much about what $5 means in USA, but in India this ₹418 seriously amounts to a lot.

@gumnaam Hello and first and most importantly, thanks for being willing to donate!

Just want you to know that your concern is heard, and it's valid. Unfortunately the platform we use doesn't yet support changing the minimums on a per-country basis.

@jamesmcguinness This reply from our PM, Ryan, explains why Thunderbird being financially independent (hence donor driven) yet keeping ties with Mozilla is the best choice for the project. mastodon.social/@ryanleesipes/…

@jwz @virtulis we (the project) considered spinning out, and Mozilla was fine with that. But the help we get versus being on our own makes it worthwhile to be related.

Finally, each entity does what benefits it. Thunderbird history has shown that the Corporation spending money on Thunderbird isn't beneficial to it. Which makes sense. We (the Thunderbird community and MZLA employees) have found a way to exist and grow with (so far) complete freedom. As I see it, that's a win.

@jamesmcguinness Basic telemetry is vital for developers to make data-driven decision.

It would be nice to provide a "Share on Fediverse" button on after-donation screen, when asking for money on mastodon.
in reply to voltar13

@voltar13 Hey there! We think that would be nice too, and our Donor Team has followed up with our provider to see if this is possible, but right now it's a technical hurdle for them. But we'll keep asking! 💙 :mastodon:
