The head of "special project" office of the federal Government is an oil executive. No wonder why high-speed rail isn't on the list, but a fucking pipeline that no one wants is.

When will the corruption stop?

Sorry world
---

Dawn Farrell, the head of the federal government’s Major Projects Office, believes the Trans Mountain oil pipeline helps fight climate change.

Speaking Thursday at the House of Commons environment committee, the former CEO of Trans Mountain who was tapped by Prime Minister Mark Carney to shepherd his major projects agenda, was asked by Bloc Québécois environment critic Patrick Bonin if she believed the pipeline contributes to the fight against climate change.

“The answer is yes,” Farrell said. “Most of the oil is cracked to make naphtha which goes into petrochemicals, which goes into making electric cars, to electrify the grid in Asia.”

Farrell, who told the committee she earns about $700,000 per year in her role at the Major Projects Office, did not offer any estimate for how many emissions she believes are avoided by using oil to help produce electric vehicles.

According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, by facilitating more oil exports, the Trans Mountain expansion project is expected to add 84 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year when taking into account both the emissions from producing and consuming the oil.

“Trans Mountain is a financial drain and an environmental disaster, and it's not reassuring to know that the CEO who finalized the project now heads the Major Projects Office,” Bonin said in a statement.

We really want to kill the planet as fast as possible

--

Prime Minister Mark Carney raised the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which would run from northern Alberta to the U.S. Midwest, during his conversations with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday, according to a source with direct knowledge of the meeting.

The source said Carney expressed renewed national interest *(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that's Alberta)* in the pipeline from the Canadian side and the U.S. president was receptive to the project advancing.

For any Canadians who want to pressure the government to force Canada Post to the table, NOT to force postal workers back to work, you can follow these steps!

If you wish to send something to Patty Hajdu directly:

If you are in Thunder Bay-Superior North, she's your MP! Write patty.hajdu@parl.gc.ca

If not, you can try writing the Ministry of Jobs and Families directly at edsc.min.ef-jf.min.esdc@hrsdc-rhdcc.gc.ca

You can call (819) 654-5546 as well.

This is what I wrote in my email (and I said something similar on the phone).

The pastebin is to provide alt text (since it breaks the 3000 alt-text limit) - you CAN use it as a template, but I encourage you to write it in your own words, especially if she's your MP!

Just thinking about how the money Canada spent on just one pipeline (TMX) could have bought every single Canadian an e-bike AND had billions left over.

Just let that sink in

Every adult and child, a free e-bike, and billions left over.

Instead we bought a pipeline.

Next we're gonna generationally invest in what? Solar? Micro-electric mobility? Battery tech? Agriculture? Health care? Kickstarting green industry?

Probably not. We're probably going to bankrupt the country for fossil fuel interests.

Carney recommending 5 'nation-building projects' for approval, including LNG expansion: sources

cbc.ca/news/politics/carney-ma…

Everything to subsidise private profit, nothing to benefit the average canadian. No transit, no high-speed rail. Nothing.

All about destroying the planet so the oligrarch can make more bucks.

#cdnpoli

I really don't think Carney knows what the words "nation building" means. "Nation building" is making big ambitious investments that make people proud of being part of the nation and unite the nation.

Public healthcare was a nation building project. The railroad was a nation building project. The Canadarm did some nation building. Weed could have been if Trudeau didn't fuck it up and put the provinces in charge. Dental care could have been if it wasn't just Obamacare for teeth.

Examples of nation building projects would be:
- High speed rail
- Free universal child care
- Massive investment in public transit across all cities (not PPP)
- A UBI
- A nationalized ISP with a mandate to provide high speed internet to all

No one is going to be like "I am so fucking proud we have invested in a copper mine!" or "Wooo! Upgrades to existing nuclear power plant!!" or "phase 2 of an LNG pipeline? Awesome! Phase 2, baby!!"

Those are not nation building. Those are just industry investment.

The Carney government's suspension of the EV mandate has nothing to do with “pragmatism” or “moderation” as I heard an interviewee say on the CBC this morning.

It's about the Ontario car industry realizing they don't make EVs or even Hybrids that can compete with Korea, Japan, or Europe (let alone China).

People want them. BC is at 20% new (the mandated level), Quebec is at 30%. Those are the #2 and #3 most populous provinces in Canada btw.

It's politics, and... specifically with Carney, cowardice, nothing else. BC’s Energy Minister Adrian Dix called it out

“I want to say this: Their target for this year, we achieved four years ago,” Dix said of the existing federal electric vehicle mandates. “The issue here in Canada -- and I think the federal government needs to engage in this a little bit -- is first and foremost with Ontario.”

Carney knows this. So why does he want more wealth inequality?

Austerity has *never* worked.

----

As the past four years and countless historical examples from the last 100 years show, while it makes sense for any one state to try and cut its way to growth, it simply cannot work when all states try it simultaneously: all we do is shrink the economy.

-

As Blyth amply demonstrates, the arguments for austerity are tenuous and the evidence thin. Rather than expanding growth and opportunity, the repeated revival of this dead economic idea has almost always led to low growth along with increases in wealth and income inequality.

How does walking back the mandate spur more demand, exactly?

"The mandate requires the number of new ZEVs (zero-emission vehicles) sold in Canada to hit 20% by next year, 60% by 2030 and 100% by 2035 in order to help the country hit its emission-reduction targets.

A government release explains that the EV pause and other measures in the strategy will... spur more domestic demand."

There is #noplanetb. 20% was already such a small number...

PM Carney to delay EV mandate, blaming Trump's tariffs.

PS There are OTHER countries that make EVs, eh. WHY AREN'T WE NEGOTIATING W/ THEM, or letting them expand into Canada?

Canada delaying plan to force automakers to hit sales targets for EVs next year: sources

cbc.ca/news/politics/carney-ev…

Let me get this. Those that don't want the EV mandate would be the one that would never vote for the PM party. (they got a pipeline with the previous PM)

Those that did? They can go fuck themselves.

FYI the TFWP that the Harper government expanded to bring in more than 500,000 LOW-SKILLED workers btwn 2006 and 2014 to be exploited by employers in the restaurant and retail industries, in addition to the agriculture industry, etc.?
