Earlier today we watched a movie called Hamnet at the local theater. In addition to it being a great movie, the audio description track is is really well done! If you are into books, I would definitely recommend it as well!

Am I finally done with these horrible, no good, verry bad #lemmy performance issues? I think I might be. Lemmy federation requires a lot more...everything...than does Mastodon style microblogging. People vote constantly. Posts and comments are longer. Everything has multiple images. And by default lemmy wants to cache everything all the time forever.
PieFed batches votes into big chunks to make federation more efficient. But it only works between PieFed instances so the full benefit will only become apparent as Lemmy fades away.
hi friend, you don't have to, you can use another WAF as you like. I just shared the rules in order to help. Lemmy isn't the culprit in this situation, it runs smoothly when I properly blocked bad crawlers.
@brasil@rimu No, it’s a hundred percent Lemmy. A database that’s over 1 tb because old federated posts never get cleared won’t be fast no matter what you do. Lemmy has no built in tools to clear this. It’s also really bad at clearing the pict-rs thumbnail cache. I don’t block crawlers, I just rate limit anyone who hits the server too often, no matter who or what they are. The Internet shouldn’t become a walled garden; as long as you’re not consuming more than your fair share of resources, you don’t need to prove your identity for access.

Unfortunately that boat is gone. I also love the OG internet, before the block my server would delivery about 50 TB dayli. Now it sits about 10 GB.
Lemmy does have automatic postgres maintenance, that's odd that you have 1TB database. Since when does your server is federating? Which instance is that you run?
@brasil@rimu I run rblind.com. We started several years ago. And every federated post ever, even if nobody locally interacted with it in any way, stays in the database. I had to set up LPP, as Lemmy doesn't have it built in: nowsci.com/lemmy/lpp/

I see you tried some solutions, in that case if you really can't get Lemmy to properly work, I head of instances that migrated to Piefed. @rimu can help with that, should not be hard, Lemmy clears the signature cache every week or so, IIRC
@brasil@rimu So there are some big reasons we can't move to piefed. First, there's no migration path that I can find documented anywhere to move user accounts, local posts, etc. Second, a lot of our users depend on apps that they find more accessible, like Thunder. Piefed doesn't have a Lemmy compatible API. Third, last I checked, Piefed really assumes you're just using Cloudflare and AWS. The AWS Console isn't accessible, and cloudflare presents inaccessible captchas, so neither of those are options for us.
I didn't know about the AWS/Cloudflare part. I think Piefed was going to or is in the way of implementing Lemmy API in order to be fully compatible with the already established apps. I am talking from memory though, I might be wrong.
About moving the posts, I guess that's a no for any ActivityPub platform I've heard so far.
Maybe it is not solvable now, but could be in a near future.

AWS can be used for email but any SMTP server can be used also and AFAIK most instances just use plain SMTP.
@rimu@brasil For now, I've gotten my Lymmy cleanup scripts doing things properly, and I've brought the server load down from 36.7 to around 5.4 on an 8 core box. And I thought AWS was required by piefed for images. Lemmy uses pict-rs and that can handle storage on the local filesystem, until I find a provider of object storage that's actually accessible and not evil (I'm not holding my breath).
@brasil@rimu And far, far more of my traffic comes from federation than from any bots. If your traffic blocked that much, I suspect your filters are preventing other servers from federating correctly. Remember that every upvote or downvote on any post anywhere is a federation event that your server needs to receive, in order to keep the vote counts up to date. So if you have even tens of active users you should be getting sometimes a hundred of these per second. Then there's stuff like LiveThreadBot, that edits posts when socur games are going on, updating them with every single play.
Doesn't Lemmy have maintenance commands for taking care of that? I mean, stock Mastodon wants to keep a lot of stuff by default forever too, but I've scripted the everloving hell out of mine.

Just to be clear: we're listing the projects and corporations who were our darlings earlier this year, until they lurched dramatically into unacceptability. The ones who've been on a downward spiral for years, they're for a different list.
Regarding @MonaApp and all the upgrade stuff: I have no idea what's going on anymore. I don't remember what I paid for Mona a few years ago, I don't know which tier I'm on, and I don't know what my upgrade path to Mona 7 is. While I have no problem at all financially supporting the apps, services, and entertainment I like, I find myself confused about my own options and concerned that this developer is not being up-front with all Mona users. I may just stay on 6 for now.
You can look up your subscription in the iOS settings with all the accompanying explanations. I believe the app itself will show you which type of subscription you have.
Just to add... I am personally happy to support the developer! Mona is probably one of the most accessible apps out there! It's so examplary, IMHO, that I would def put it in the accessibility hall of fame!
@vick21 Agree with Victor. Very happy to support this developer. No app quite like it. Subscriptions are the way of the future and developers need to do what they need to do to keep a revenue stream going. This is definitely one worth supporting. Stay the course.
@vick21 Agreed. It has amazing accessibility customization settings, it uses actions well, it lets you control the magic tap, and on and on. I love it, and would support the developer except for what seem like questionable pricing decisions. It's worse that there's been no clarifying post, not that I've seen anyway, even after all the posts mentioning the developer and asking for explanations.
@vick21 there were previously two tears of Mona. There was a base pro purchase which granted you a license to use it on iPhone and iPad, and a Pro Max which you could upgrade to that also adds the Mac version. That's the version which gives you an upgrade path to Mona 7 lifetime, that's how I understand it. So anyone who bought the iPhone/iPad only versions of Mona Classic has to go to Pro Max first or take the Mona 7 subscription.

I am an author. I've released work with Carina Press, and I've released work on my own. My released work is on record as HAVING BEEN STOLEN BY OPENAI, and I am in fact one of the many, many authors who've had to file claims on the settlement with Anthropic.
So I am not kidding when I say I don't want that technology, technology which HAS STOLEN FROM ME, anywhere near a program I use. ESPECIALLY the program I've used to not only manage my ebook library, but even perform format conversions on my work to prep it for sale. /1
"Oh, but they're unobtrusive, you don't have to use the features if you don't want them" isn't good enough. My baseline is "I don't want that crap in programs I use AT ALL". Period. Full stop.
So I will for the foreseeable future remain on Calibre 8.10, the last known version to have no AI features in it whatsoever. And if an AI-free competitor eventually shows up, I am prepared to transfer my ebooks into a new manager if I have to.
Am I extremely fucking salty about this? YES I AM. Because, again: THIS TECHNOLOGY STOLE MY WORK and that of countless other creatives all over the world. What miss it's an easier way to choose our server with an auto select (based on location) of them (if the operator of the relay agree to join), to push user accross them.
For 1 increate server failure resillience (if everyone is on the default and that one stop the whole system is down).
Finish the docker image (must be a emergency feature).

Using my Sound Remote/Virtual Here Android to Windows remote control to control my PC from the bed just because, I can. I'm tired and it works so flawlessly with almost no delay. Honestly much better than trying to get a somewhat proper lag free bluetooth/wireless connection from devices directly to the PC to work.
I didn't quite believe this when I first started. It is actually easier to set up, and more reliable than bluetooth audio and braille. Bluetooth, the very short distance product, is actually worse, in terms both of latency and ease of startup, than the product on the network. Seriously, I just don't know what to say. This doesn't make sense. The only thing which brings things sort of into competition is aptx. That both costs money and is sometimes unavailable. Again, talk about counterintuitive.
@techsinger Yup, + I can use my keyboard under my blanket without lag and yeah, connectivity issues. It's just as you said, much more stable. Impressive, but hey I can't complain really. Love it. I wanna try to get Sound Remote started up automatically though, when I need it or something. Maybe through a keystroke. Because atm, I always have to fall back to NVDA Remote for the first minute or so to configure stuff, like unlocking the PC and opening Sound Remote.
Personally, I disable automatic locking for my home machines. It helps that I don't have a monitor and I trust my people completely, but even if it were just no monitor, I would forget about locking. I haven't used sounddRmote yet, but do have Sonobus on win+2 which launches it and connects it to the group automatically. All I have to do is hit win+2 and then launch SB to get sound. VH is automatic for the keyboard and if the display is plugged into the phone, it uses that as well. The only time I have to start up is after a reboot, and that's just because I'm lazy, I could very easily have SB start on boot.
Hey @FreakyFwoof sup! I was told via brother @cordova5029 that you had a soundfont you've made? I wanted to see if it'll be good to use in the tracker I work with? Also putting this here to gage interest on old hardware disks and stuff out there, I have some old Korg DSS1 disk if anyone wants em.
