#PSA: If someone says they accidentally reported you, it's a scam.

If someone says you need to verify your Mastodon account, it's a scam.

If someone says you need to change the email address on your account, it's a scam.

If someone tries to lure you off-platform to Discord or Telegram, it's a scam.

If someone jumps into your replies or DMs with a mutual aid request, it's a scam.

If someone from mastodon.social sends you an unsolicited DM, it's a scam.

---

Telltale signs of a scam:

- wants you to move off-site
- wants you to change account settings
- wants you to click something
- unsolicited private interactions
- new account
- under ~20 followers and over ~5:1 follow ratio
- sense of urgency
- appeals to your compassion
- piggybacks on a trending post or event

Anyone on here also use Bluesky? I signed up back in June but am really just starting to use it regularly. I'm not giving up on Mastodon, but Bluesky is where a lot of news orgs migrated and I miss having those news sources.
I should also note that Bluesky has really great hashtag alt text settings, but I have not come across anyone who uses them yet. It makes me wonder why did that catch on over here, and not there? Is there just something about mastodon users that makes them more inclined to care about #Accessibility?

defending remote work against return to office executive mandates was cited as one of the major motivating factors :)

The demo of DECtalk 4.3 includes a file named WORLD2.WAV, which is used as an example to demonstrate DECtalk's ability to play WAV files with a command.
I recently found a higher quality 22 kHz version of this demo file, as part of The Adventures of Ninja Nanny & Sherrloch Sheltie of all things, under the name 1DONARAI.WAV.
This version has a time stamp of October 27, 1990. The version included in the DECtalk 4.3 demo has a time stamp of July 13, 1994, and is downsampled to 11025 kHz, but also upsampled to 16 bit for some reason. I still don't know the source, but I suspect it's from a stock music library.
For those who've never heard of The Adventures of Ninja Nanny & Sherrloch Sheltie, here's the LGR video covering it. It's supposed to be edutainment, but mostly ends up as a wild mishmash of public domain and stock music material stroon everywhere. youtube.com/watch?v=xSxaUHT3yo….
The original WAV file is available here: drive.google.com/uc?id=1LDNUtE….

#chatmail relays are recently getting more artful in their web presence 🤩 Nice examples:

darkrun.dev in Ontario, or
bloc7.icu/ in Warszawa.

We estimate there are ~4 times more relays than in the published list at chatmail.at/relays

Many relays are smaller ones, but that's fine. A 5 EUR per month VPS can go a long way (thousands or tens of thousands of monthly users). Thanks for the service to all the operators of which around 40 are in a loose group chat 💗

¡Gracias!

Amazon launched a generative AI recap video system, to help viewers catch up with TV shows.

It launched with Fallout, its own TV show.

…however, Amazon have had to delete the video after viewers pointed out it got almost every detail wrong. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3r77j…

Schade. Aber danke für die schnelle Antwort.

⚠️ Scam alert: if anyone ever asks you to "temporarily change" the email address on your Mastodon account, DO NOT DO THIS.

There is currently a scammer posing as a server admin telling people to temporarily change their Mastodon account's email to an address supplied by the scammer. This is a scam, don't do it.

Real admins will NEVER ask you to do this.

You can see examples of this scam in the thread at ohai.social/@redsad/1157080301…

(Thanks @markwyner for the warning about this! 🙏 )
