Struggling with Nerdbank #GitVersioning to do what I want it to do. Seems quite a simple task but for some reason I can't manage it. I want it to increase the fourth version number upon a commit into master. I don't care what happens on non-master branch, it might be like 1.0.0-dev.123 or whatever, but the Master branch must be clean and must have increasing builds, like: 1.0.0.1, 1.0.0.2, 1.0.0.3 etc. If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears. #DotNet #Version
since NBGV uses the git height, every merge to master must be squashed to get sequential x.x.x.1, x.x.x.2. Non-squashed merges will jump the final value by the merged height.
Then set your version value to "1.0.0" in version.json. This will set it to use a 4 segment build number for file versions instead of the default 3 segments. Nuget package version will still only have 3 segments.
If you want to get a x.x.x.0 build on major versions (instead of x.x.x.1), you need to offset the initial commit height. You can set buildNumberOffset to -1 for this.

I have a question. So on Windows 11, specifically this desktop, executables are taking a few seconds to launch and UI's are particularly laggy. Instance, I have an app that draws many items to a list. On my windows 10 laptop with exactly half the specs, this UI responds twice as fast as on this desktop with double the CPU power and ram. Why the hell and can I do anything about it, short of downgrading back to 10?
Also in this app, I use ffmpeg for a thing, but it takes about 5 seconds for the executable to even launch. Not so much on the laptop, it happens instantly.
No idea, but I had something very similar on a Windows 10 install a few years ago, and I never did figure it out. For some context, I wanted Windows Defender completely out of the way, so I basically turned it off by having a shit ton of exclusions set up. It was technically still running since I didn't know how to make it not, but I was basically letting everything through. I doubt that had anything to do with it, but it's the only thing I can think of.
For what it's worth, I'm currently on win11. Defender is always on. I only have minimal exclusions. And I don't really have lag issues on a day to day basis. So yeah I can't' really justify why turning it off or whatever would actually add lag. But what do I know? Windows in general can be really dumb sometimes.
This is precisely why I haven't upgraded to 11 (or rather upgraded and rolled back on two separate occasions). It slows down significantly, noticeably, and annoyingly.
It does. IT would be a significant pain in the ass to downgrade this time though, so I'm trying, to avoid doing that, but I may not have a choice if this continues.
@Jonathan I know that Smart Screen and Microsoft Defender do things in the background for file testing. You might want to trun off smart screen and file checking in Microsoft Defender to see if that makes a difference. i've been meanint to try that actually, because I've been having the same issue.
11 doesn't like being screenless more than 10. HDMI headless dongle counts as ascreen in this case, but I've heard tell of that virtual display driver thing not working as well

I think it's been almost five years since I first pointed out that if GNU wanted to revitalize itself, one way would be an large effort to port old C stuff (like coreutils) to Rust, to improve quality--and attract new energy and people.
It’s absolutely true that AI is reducing jobs, but not like you think. AI is not *doing* those jobs instead of people, AI speculation is redirecting *investment* away from job-creating businesses to capital-intensive businesses.

I have reasons to believe that that is not sustainably happening at scale, but that doesn't mean it's not happening at all.
Zero percent interested in a pissing contest over word salad (e.g., 'ok, but is AI actually *doing* those jobs or does management just hope that they will and are doing preemptory layoffs on faith'- I do think this is exactly what's happening and it remains to be seen if anything we might call AI is up to performing to task, so that can be an argument or not; whatever), but if you're actually assessing, I think the McKinsey RIF is a decent starting place.

And I don't mean that AI is failing to do those jobs, I mean that AI adopting firms are not reducing their head-count at scale, but that jobs are being lost because they are simply not being created or vanishing as a result of investment shifts.
@jnl in my case, the speculation about AI ("it's going to replace programmers!") caused mass layoffs a few springs ago, and I was part of that. Whether AI is actually accomplishing anything like I used to do is doubtful, more like entire industries and departments were declared nonprofitable and the economy was strip mined to reorient around whatever is currently seeing cash flow, which is an increasingly smaller number of industries, products, and services
that may be happening to some degree, but AI-adopting firms are in general growing, not reducing head count. However, investment redirection towards capital-intensive AI firms is reducing job-creation and causing layoffs for funding reasons, those jobs are just not being created or vanishing, not being *done by ai*
@jnl we're essentially saying the same thing, I think the other piece is that some people in those less fortunate businesses end up trying to do more with less, i.e. there may be less incentive to hire a junior developer or writer to take care of busywork when AI can supposedly do it for you. So the "taken job" is a little less visible because with all the shakeup it also maybe didn't exist in the first place and a bunch of businesses pivoted hard rather than "use AI to do someone's job"
@jnl for example news outlets are absolutely being caught using AI to write articles, and they've been getting squeezed for decades. So it's mostly a continuing trend of automation pushing down wages and job security
@jnl I'm not sure about more jobs in the end, it would take long term analysis to figure that out. For example surely there aren't more weavers now than before the automated loom, and I doubt there are even more people employed in the weaving industry or the loom design manufacturing maintenance and operation industry now. If there are more people employed today, it may be that they're textile call center workers, pool cleaners, and baristas?
I’m influenced by two factors here: Jevons Paradox and the equalization of the rate of profit. The former suggests that reducing costs increases utilization; the latter suggests that profit rates will eventually direct investment toward value creation, as firms seek to capitalize on effectively lower wages by capturing more labour.

In the weaving example, there may be fewer skilled weavers, but the overall workforce involved in textile production is far larger.
it’s not even AI that’s killing the jobs, it’s their bosses who are always looking for ways to increase profits while paying people less. Blaming AI just provides the billionaires with a handy scapegoat.
You can call abuse of power by the wealthiest whatever you want, just get out of the way of those that want to make more of a difference for future generations.
I think it gives executives cover to fire people with impunity. They can pretend the AI makes it OK, but it doesn’t have to. They don’t need to justify it. They don’t even need to do the math.
@anne_twain they can be, but one of them isn't. The job losses to automation narrative has never really panned out, and likely wont this time either. Too much money to be made exploiting people, so investors will focus on things that deskill and lower wages, while the labour force only ever grows.
And the "capital" they're "investing" in does not last long before failing and/or made obsolete, and is worthless for anything other than largely worthless AI and crypto currency. If and when the bubble bursts, it's not capital investment, it's just a huge loss.

The issue with cryptocurrencies is that bitcoin was never meant to be used as is, it was a PoC, and not ready for production. People have not thought it out, and used it immediately, first for fun, and then as a finance vehicle.
Now, we have an entire "industry" betting on cryptocurrencies as if it was wall street on crack and meth, and it is literally burning our planet for internet points... 😭
But if we go back to the roots, and see it for what it actually is: a decentralized ledger, that can be made both compliant and private, as is the case with zcash, it can literally free us from our actual struggle against late stage capitalism.
For this, of course, we need to free ourselves of the "cryto bad" dogma, and check why it failed in its current form, and how it can be used for good.

@jdking92 @ZBennoui TBH, everything sucks. I use both equally right now and every time I go back and forth I hit something that just pisses me off on either platform. Also in your specific case Ableton, and audio things in general are so much better on Mac. Windows screen readers really fall apart in terms of efficiency because of the emphasis on tab-centric navigation. Something I can get to with a simple VO-F to search or VO-I for the item chooser on Mac might take 15 or 20 tabs to find on Windows.

I also completely agree about the way voiceover handles navigation with grouping, it's always made a lot of sense to me, and it is amazing when navigating audio software in particular. I honestly don't think I could actually switch full-time, I love Mac OS too much and I really don't wanna deal with Microsoft's shit. I just wish VO wasn't a total disaster in some ways, I know Apple is trying to improve it, but progress is slow.
