Poslední aktualizace Mastodonu je významově neopomenutelná. Reposty příspěvků byly dlouhou dobou to, co nás odlišovalo od Twitteru ve smyslu šíření negativního. Já jen budu doufat, že tady nebudou zneužívány lidsky řečeno k vysmívání.
Chtěl jsem si vyzkoušet citaci příspěvku a vůbec jsem to nenašel 😃 ono to nejde v mobilním klientu? Možná to nebude tak časté, když to není vidět 😃 @fabia_man
@electricCZ @archos Záleží, který mobilní klient. Oficiální to umí, ale ukáže ti tu možnost, jen když to je u daného příspěvku povolené, ostatní klienty jako Tusky to zatím neumí.

@electricCZ @archos pro každý zvlášť, ale máš výchozí nastavení, které se ti ukáže při psaní tootu. Je to rozšíření nastavení viditelnosti postu. Já mám třeba u tohoto tootu: veřejné, kdokoliv může citovat.

@electricCZ Aha, moje chyba. Tak se zdá, že má nová verze i hezčí náhledy postu z mastodonu při vložení odkazu a já si to popletl. Pak je už jediná možnost a to, že to appka ještě nemá implementovaný.

I do not know if he intended to share it with me, but our 11-yo shared a Google Slides deck titled "The New Chat Room" that is approximately 500 slides long, where each slide is students in his class posting pop culture pictures &/or memes & using the Slides comments to chat with each other about them—I knew that students used this kind of hack to get around school content filters but seeing it in action is something else
Last night the 11yo broke down the Google Slides middle school Chatroom for me:
1. At first they used a Google doc but the infinite scroll was too chaotic 2. In the slide deck each new slide is one “post”—some all text, some images, some both— 3. They use slides’ comments feature to “reply” to each other’s “posts” 4. This allows participants to easily flip between posts using the slide thumbnail navigation, so they can find the conversations they care about easily 5. He owns the file & if anyone spams it, deletes other people’s posts, or gets nasty, he can revert the file to its previous save state & remove the spammer’s access 6. He did share the file with me on purpose, I think because he was proud & wanted me to see what he’d made

To be honest, I get what the monetary model is here and can support that. Paying for a major version upgrade is a decent pattern, get new features that have taken time and effort to build. The problem is that from my point of view version 7 is not a feature upgrade since what it contains is: ⁃ A bunch of GenAI crap that I can mostly ignore but can't fully disable so it's sometimes in the way. (No way to confirm if my post language has been detected correctly, just trust the LLM or always use default, no more language selector for you.) ⁃ Fiddling with live photos that isn't standard or compatible with anything or anyone outside of your app? I hope I'm not accidentally touching it and sending out something that breaks for others. So again niche and dangerous. ⁃ Visual tweaks to conform to LiquidGlass, which I'm willing to tolerate, but it's not a good design language to emulate and after months on v7 throughout iOS 18 and 26, the v6 interface feels so much better now that I looked at it again after a long pause. Getting that interface would feel like a feature release! ⁃ Bug and compatibility fixes, which should be a v6 bugfix update.
So it's a bugfix update plus stuff I need to actively tolerate. Surely you can see why it feels unfair to call it a major version paid upgrade? I'm sure you and some folks like the GenAI crap and spent a bunch of effort on it, but can we just have the bug & compat fixes backported to v6 and then I can go back to that? Happy to upgrade when there's desired features in a feature upgrade. But then the problem is that even if v8 has actual real new features I'd care about, I'd still need to tolerate "v7, the GenAI & LiquidAss edition" being the basis of it.
TL;DR; v7 has felt like an update I could tolerate as long as I thought it was going to be free. Learning it's not flips the value equation deeply into the negative even if given cheap upgrade pricing.
@jeff @jinna May I ask what’s not been honored? Mona Pro Max can be used, fully functional, the same way as when you purchased it, as long as you want, as advertised on the purchase screen.
If I bought an iPhone 16 last year, of course I don’t expect Apple to send me an iPhone 17 for free, and I can just keep using the iPhone 16.
“But I bought Mona 5 and you upgraded me to Mona 6 for free!” That’s a gift, not an obligation.
That is a bad, and totally not write business model. No one buys a phone every year, but a phone is way more expensive than an app. You give very little, not on-device AI, that may or may not train itself on our posts, images, etc. We have no say what we do with language, and other nasty AI stuff. You like your capitalist views, I'll like to go buy another app that is actually worth it and values my privacy and won't train AI on posts, or such things. People should really find a better app, but the direction you are going is seriously... Not a good one, to be fair. Maybe you'd like to re-consider this way of modelling business. In business, the customer is always right. Or they are absolutely free to walk out, cuss you out and continue on their merry way, and you're the only one who loses.
@tardis @jeff I find it rather ironic, and also rather revealing what these latest developments from the Mona people are planning to do. Its quite clear that they have absolutely zero knowledge nor care about their target audience and their values. Uh, "hullo"! its a Mastodon app!?! What the hell does Mastodon primarily stand for? Non-surveillance, non-big tech, non-capitalism, entirely! These developments, and direction of the Mona app are absolutely and completely antithetical to the core ethose, beliefs, and values of which the majority of the Mastodon and wider Fediverse community charish most. Ultimately, it is we the customer who wield the ultimate control, choice, and power to do something about this situation. Its a bit hard to make money on a product everyone hates. Everyone has the freedom of choice, and fortunately, Mona isn't the only one. Perhaps they may come to see the error of their ways, but a PR disaster is a PR disaster, and there's no real way to ever truly recover from that. So the people will do what the people will do, they will speak with their voices, keyboards, and wallets, and if Mona goes down in a wall of flames, its rather unfortunate. It was a good thing there for a good while.
@adam @tardis I won’t go that far. I'm not anti-capitalist, and have no problem with a fellow developer making a living from their work. I've been running the Mona 7 beta and don't see anything in the "direction" of the product itself that is “antithetical” to anything - though, like any feature update, there's some stuff I have no use for.
My only issue is the bait-and-switch. If you sell something, you provide it. If you regret your past business model, you still honor it.
i am not exclusive anti capitalist or stuff like that, but this one deserved a call. The AI is my big, big, huge issue here, and the unclear way in which business is handled. I can't afford the app anyway, but it sure is frustrating to those using the app:
Keep using the app you have, for as long as you want and pay once or:
Subscribe and get features that you didn't want, with a redesign that you say you don't like.
You bought the version of the app you have, you aren't forced to upgrade.
Everyone talks about enshitification, and how subscriptions are bad. If neither one of these methods are used, how are developers supposed to keep a revenue stream?

I agree that recurring revenue is pretty much necessary for a sustainable app. Subscription or one-time within a major version (v5, v6, v7) is pretty common for complex apps.
That said:

It is hardly unreasonable for users to expect what is advertised as a one-time purchase to include future updates, and if these are only within major versions that should be disclosed.
So will this be an entirely new app rather than an update to this one? If so, what will happen to the current Mona app? And why will it be an entirely new app?

Which, arguably, is better than forced annual subs where you can't use the app at all without shoveling out more money
I don't love it, but I do find it a better compromise than forced subs. You get to use the app as long as your OS lets you, & the dev gets paid for future work IF you find that new work compelling enough

I have been using the btspeak heavily for a few days, and it has made me think about the role of notetakers. I am a great smartphone user, but I must admit the menu system of this thing is very easy to use. And that means something. And the BTSpeak is relatively cheap. Curious what others think about notetakers. I think they still have a place in 2025.
Is there a way on ANdroid I can tell an app not to be detected by the Play Store? I installed Prudence Screen Reader from outside the play store, and now it wants to update it from inside the play store and fails.
Yes, you can. I'm not exactly sure how, but I know you can disable it. I've done it for ntfy. Try to go to the apps page in the Play Store and check if there are any more options menus or similar, probably in the upper right corner.
So yeah, on the page of the app in the Play Store, so click on the app, where you can see the description, reviews etc. in the upper right corner, there is a menu, something like more options. If you click there, there are 3 options: share, mark as inappropriate, and a checkbox whether you want it to be included in updates or not.
Well it is. It does not get updated by the Playstore, as you ask for in your 1st post. I don't think more is possible, and I don't know why it would be needed.
@mcourcel @cubic Yup, I have downloaded a lot of my apps through Obtainium and the Play Store overwrote some, now my Bitwarden is kinda screwed, and some other apps. I need to reinstall them because now Obtainium refuses to update, and then disable the updates in the Play Store.

the sooner Linux can actually support low latency audio applications like Ableton and Reaper (Reaper exists on Linux but is completely inaccessible), the sooner I switch.
Yeah, all that comes up. But there was a native beta about a year ago. I guess it's still not released. Clearly they can do it, because Move runs on Linux, and it's about as low latency as it gets. Granted, they're doing some custom stuff for the carrier board because Raspberry Pi doesn't have the I/O, and the DAC kind of sucks anyway.
@BorrisInABox It's funny you bring this up because I was on Ableton's discord server earlier and they were talking about Linux support. It's something quite a few people want, but doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon. Also important to note that many plug-ins probably won't run over there, and a lot of the accessibility advancements we've made over the past few years, like with JUCE and Native Instruments, aren't supported either.
