Yesterday was my first bad day on Mastodon, and what happened to me could happen to you, so let me explain what went down, and how I got blocked by a lot of people.

In March, I wrote a post critical of Musk (picture 1). I then asked another Mastodon user (Harriett) whom I have found friendly, if she would help me translate a Danish phrase to English, and linked to the Musk post where the phrase would be relevant.

But yesterday — 4 months later — that blew up in my face. Here is how…

I don't know if anybody noticed #ZeroFS yet, but it seems there is a completely user space-implementation of #NFS and #blockstorage on top of #S3 #objectstorage: github.com/Barre/zerofs

The Orbit Player user guide/manual is now released. It is located on the Orbit player support page, which I had to google to find. The Orbit player and Orbit speak are not listed on the Orbit research support page but all or I think most of their other products are. Googling has been the only way I have been able to find any support pages for the player or speak. Player support page is linked below. Find the heading documentation, hit the link download player user guide and a page will be loaded where you can choose your format. Thoughts on the manual in next post.

I've spent over 30 years managing large government operations. One lesson I carry with me comes from the retirement years ago of an employee most would have considered “obscure.” He was a quiet man — arriving each morning with his sandwich, working steadily, and leaving without much fanfare. To many, he seemed part of the furniture. It was only when he left that we truly realized his value. Over the years, he had accumulated deep, almost invisible knowledge. He had taken on countless menial but essential tasks simply because he had the experience to do them well. He was, in many ways, the oil in the machine. His departure forced us to scramble. We suddenly saw how many small, critical pieces he had been holding together — pieces no job description had captured, and no system had tracked. Since then, I've often thought of him when I see organizations subjected to blind cuts. The true cost of such decisions is rarely visible on a balance sheet: it’s in the loss of quiet expertise, institutional memory, and the small acts of continuity that keep complex systems running.

Ah cool, Archlinux had another oopsie-whoopsie that was only communicated on the mailing lists.

They found malware on the AUR. Reminder that anyone can put stuff on the AUR and when an AUR client offers to let you inspect the package build scripts, it's because it's no one's job to make sure the package is safe.

"But people tell me to install stuff off the AUR all the time and I'm no dev that can understand these scripts" -- Yup! This is one of Arch's primary problems. It's why they make it non-trivial to bootstrap into getting stuff off AUR to begin with, but that's not enough when 98% of Arch users need something off it.

Weh.

I think the real lesson of that thread is exactly what they said at the end, about the importance of asking questions first. Yes, the bug happened to be in the Bluesky bridge this time. But it could have been in a popular Mastodon client instead. One could in fact think of the Bluesky bridge as a popular alternative Mastodon client. It seems to me that the real problem was the angry mob taking action too quickly, causing the situation to escalate before the author could do anything.
