The Debian Policy Manual has been updated to version 4.7.0.0. Highlights include: The addition of the non-free-firmware archive, hard links now permitted in source packages, addressing autobuild network permissions, and systemd requirements for packages that automatically start or stop system services. https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/index.html https://micronews.debian.org/2024/1712509512.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #debian

@valhalla @eliasr

It didn't occur to me, that some of the #Debian #slang might be obscure or even alienating to other people. Maybe we should from that #jargon? Or better point to https://wiki.debian.org/Glossary?

MiniDebconfBerlin 24 registration and CfP are open. The conference will take place Tue May 14th till Tue May 21st at c-base.org in Germany. See https://lists.debian.org/6183020.4L0H4hUvkO@tomato#1 https://micronews.debian.org/2024/1712135170.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #debian

Its also kinda enlightening on how distros react to the #xz backdoor:
* #arch "lets rerelease the version from the untrusted party, we run autogen.sh ourselves now"
* #debian "lets roll back to the last version not having any changes by the untrusted party and rebuild our infra from scratch"

I know which of these I trust more as an upstream ...

I am working on a GTK/#Relm4 password manager already 😎
But it is a client for #BitWarden/#VaultWarden only.
You want to build a local one?

#GTK #Rust #rustlang #GNOME #Linux #Ubuntu #Linux #Fedora #OpenSUSE #Debian

Are you experienced with GTK and Rust ? :gnome: ❤️ :rust:

We are looking to contract someone to work on the new GNOME Password Manager 🔑

We want it to become a core/default app and help secure millions of users.

You'll be working with the GNOME Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to building emancipatory technologies for everyone.

Please send resume / portfolio to stf@gnome.org

Boosts welcome :boost_love:

Although no Debian stable versions are known to be affected by CVE-2024-3094 the next point release for 12.6 has been postponed while we investigate the effects of this CVE on the Archive. https://lists.debian.org/debian-security-announce/2024/msg00057.html https://micronews.debian.org/2024/1711844961.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #debian

I know this is not directly related to the recent Chinese (?) backdoor, but the XZ format has all kind of problems and I personally avoid using it. Having a better compression ratio is not a reason to prefer XZ, IMHO. See https://www.nongnu.org/lzip/xz_inadequate.html

CVE-2024-3094 concerning a backdoor exploit in XZ Utils 5.6.0 and 5.6.1 releases are currently being analyzed, for the moment we have paused Archive processing. We will advise as soon as possible. Yeah switching to a #linux based system is a huge improvement if talking about #privacy. Today most of the software is easily accessible on Linux and works great. Even if there's no dedicated #linux version there are still something like Wine or awesome free and open source alternatives. I can recommend #debian and #popos.

For messaging apps I love #signalmessenger and I can also recommend Session.

For browser as well as a search engine I'd pick Brave.
Librewolf is also great

of course sandboxes improve #security. It is important to remember that sandboxes by definition are sets of restrictions. If a sandbox only restricts things you don't use, you win. Sandbox restrictions often break features that users want. Since I'm focused on #UserFreedom and #FreeSoftware, I want community control over which restrictions are in place. #Android does not provide that unless you have the skills to hack and make your own ROM, even then its hard. #Debian does provide that.

Anyone tried #bcachefs in #debian ? I pulled the experimental kernel, formatted a partion and it failed to mount.
I should have checked that before I moved 360GB of files :)
