That's nothing new. 1️⃣ People buy antivirus software and install updates on their laptops, but never care about the router device, the gateway to the internet which is silently online 24/7 2️⃣ Manufacturers only provide one or two updates fixing some user facing features and done. No further security fixes.
That's why I am glad for #Turris. An open router running Linux, the OS I understand and that I use on all my PCs, laptops and servers (and soon phone I hope). With long software support. The first Turris I got is from 2015 and it still gets updates to the newest OpenWRT. ❤️
I finally got some time to reconfigure my network. From now on #Turris #OmniaNG is my main gateway to the internet. Well, the software needs a lot of polish: 🪲 It has a wifi7 card, but I have to run it only in AC mode, or any connected client causes restart of all radios. I hope this will be fixed soon. 🪲 The display only worked on first boot, since than it only shows scrambled image or nothing. I don't mind it, as it's just a novelty for me. One day I would like to try render my own stuff maybe. ❓ It has two SFP+ ports, so I also bought 2×Turris metallic 1/2.5/5/10G SFP+ modules. One for older Omnia, one for Omnia NG. It makes the connection, but it runs 2.5G in one direction (that's ok, it's the maximum older omnia can handle) and 0.2G in the other direction. I don't understand why. Is it a hardware failure? Or software bug? Or technolohy incompatibilty of some kind? 🤷♂️ 🪲 Some LEDs are resetting brightness to max often. That's a bit annoying.
Sporting 4x2.5 Gbps interfaces and 2xSFP+ for WAN and LAN0 it should finally catch up with recent heavy rollout of fiber everywhere - for example here in Prague, 2 Gbps fiber lines are not unusual lately. Also, it will have 4 core ARMv8 cpu, which is a nice upgrade from current ARMv7 dual core.
This is not an advertisement, just my excitement, because I want to get my hands on one - we are using Turris since the first test batch more than ten years ago and it's a very versatile piece of networking hardware - especially nowadays, when PC Engines stopped manufacturing APU boards.
I plan to do a short review when the time comes - any request what I should try? Or questions about my experience with current Turris Omnia 2020?

Před 9 lety jsem odeslal 226 USD do #Indiegogo kampaně na #router #Turris Omnia. Router stále úspěšně slouží, a věřím, že ještě dlouho sloužit bude – a bude stále aktualizovaný 💪

And I remembered that I've got the exact same model as you do in Czech Republic and without any single manual action it's updating and serving my family back there.
I am nearly decided to get a new one for my new apartment.
Precisely 10 years ago, I received my first #Turris router from CZ.NIC. Even after all these years the router still receives the latest software updates and can be even upgraded to support Wi-Fi 6.
Pořád pracujeme na výkonných open-source routerech s bezpečnostními funkcemi. To se nezměnilo. S novými a novými aktualizacemi se routery Turris stále vyvíjí.
