I really cannot get over the level of brazen gaslighting here. Trump already sought to seize power after losing one election. He has just picked a VP whose chief qualification is having loudly declared he’d have been complicit in that scheme. He is openly boasting about his desire to weaponise the Justice Department to pursue political foes. If that’s not an existential threat to democracy, I can’t imagine what would be.
I'm glad mine actually increased its contribution, but I also decided to do something by myself and give a monthly donation too. Can't donate our way out of this problem but at least we can try to help a bit.
@modulux It feels frustratingly little, but it does make an impact. The Dutch state donated €19 million in 2023. If ~65,000 Dutch people would donate €25 a month, we'd already cover this completely.

Today, chatting on IRC, the topic of decorative fruit came up. I recently read that lemons, at least in Spain, were decorative originally, and only later people worked out they could be eaten or used for flavouring food.
Someone else pointed out a similar situation took place with pineapples in the UK and posted this fascinating article about it: bbc.com/news/uk-england-534328…
Pineapples were a status symbol, and were so expensive they would be exposed for show rather than eaten, until they rotted. There were pineapples for rent, and they required security and were at risk of theft.
That made me think about... 1) Fruit trees used for decoration, like orange trees in Seville. I am used to see almond trees and ornamental plum trees in Spain, but last month I discovered an apricot tree in a park, and I have met many tropical fruit trees used as decoration.
2) Artichokes sold as decorative flowers in a german market. Indeed, we supermarket guys visit traditional markets as if the products were an ethnographical exhibition, and not food. Hence prices raise.
You're right a lot of tree, especially in cities, are used that way. There's of course the famous patio de los naranjos, which was a public space adjacent to the mosque before it got turned into a church. I do find fascinating that a fruit tree that gives lemons wouldn't be used for the fruit at all though.

The article on pineapples estimates a pineapple in the early 1800s might cost the equivalent of around 11000 pounds in today's money. So one can see how it might seem strange to eat it.

Yep, good point. It seems to make more sense with exotic species though. I imagine they were eaten in the place where they were domesticated. Not sure if lemons were domesticated as a food or as a decoration plant.
Why not? You can run irc on a shitty 2400 bps connection on a 386. Matrix, for good or ill, has a lot more heavy clients. Personally I find IRC a lot more convenient to use as well, without the tons of message can't be decrypted issues that come up on matrix.
Right, but I would argue that unless one is severely limited by bandwidth, the cons of IRC far outweigh the pros, namely lack of message history, no end to end encryption, etc. genuinely curious though if if there’s something I am missing. Also, apologies if I inadvertently mangle things or if I am showing a lack of understanding of concepts. I’m technical enough to be dangerous but have not delved deeply into IRC.
Nah, no problem. You're right it has its downsides, I just find it a lot easier to use is all. I haven't found a matrix client that I'm happy with in terms of accessibility and they're very heavy. Message history is a big one, though if you're most of the time in the channel it doesn't matter as much, and there are some solutions like IRC v3, though finding a server and client that support it is not straightforward either, I admit. There's SSL encryption to the server and there are encryption solutions for private messages, but sure, that won't work well on channels.
Just amused that, coicidentally, the IRC versus Matrix thing came up on the IRC channel I'm in spontaneously today. Pretty much everyone complained Matrix is slow and complex, though also admitted it has advantages like visibility into messages when one disconnects.

And yet this privacy invasion wasn't announced or discussed ahead of time, wasn't explicitly presented to the user, and was opt-in by default. These are classic signs of a company who knows what they're doing is wrong, and want to see if maybe they can get away with it.
There is no such thing as "privacy-preserving" ad tech. This is a betrayal of the Firefox userbase, and pretending otherwise is disingenuous at best.
@narinarinari Except it was announced - two years ago, even on the mainline Mozilla blog (you just didn't care enough to interact with it). And except it is privacy-preserving (if you disagree, then please, publish an article showing how DAP can be reversed or somehow de-anonymized!)
If we wanted to hide it, we'd have hundreds of different ways to do that. None of which would include "adding a visible toggle to the settings", and "add it to the release notes".

You do realize that just knowing what a Github repo is, or where Mozilla's official blog is, puts you and I in a group consisting of 0.000000001% of the userbase for most software, right?
