Thanks to everyone who shared their thoughts about American cellular carriers in response to my question. From those initial answers, I was able to do some additional research. I have always enjoyed getting into the weeds with all things phone-related, so this has been fun. I thought I would pay it forward by posting here about my conclusions in case there are others interested, and of course others may have experiences to share. I am going to start with US Mobile, and see how it goes. There are two reasons for my choice. First, US Mobile is an MVNO, (mobile virtual network operator). Earlier this year, they became known as a "super carrier", and have access to all three major US networks, AT&T which they call dark Star, T-Mobile which they call Light Speed, and Verizon Wireless which they call Warp. This is a bit confusing if you sign up without knowing the nicknames, but I imagine that they're prohibited from using the actual network names for branding/trademark reasons. When you are a US Mobile customer, you can switch between the three carriers. There will be some limitations around the switch depending on your plan, and I'll come back to those. This is attractive for me as someone who likes to geek out on these things, because I can switch from time to time to conduct testing, without the need to keep porting my number. There are also practical benefits. If you're going somewhere a little off the beaten path, and you know that, for example, Verizon gives better service, you can switch. One thing to note though is that if you have an Apple Watch and want cellular service for it, you're going to be locked into Verizon because that's the only network where US Cellular can provide Apple Watch Cellular support. But they can do it via an individual number for your Watch or a companion plan for your existing smartphone number. Switching carriers is not as simple as choosing the network in the user interface of your phone. You have to use the US Mobile website for this task and it can take a few minutes before the switch is actioned. My second reason for starting with US Mobile is the customer service. It gets praised highly, and in my experience, justifiably so. I sent them a couple of emails last night and they replied with meaningful responses within minutes. They are also on Reddit, with an active subreddit with multiple staff responding to inquiries. They have no physical stores, and that suits me just fine. I would far rather deal with good support at home than go into a noisy store. I am not particularly driven by price, but the plans are attractive. They have some very good plans for those on a budget, for just a few dollars per month. Their Unlimited Starter plan is just $25 if you pay by the month. This gives you 35GB of full speed data before they slow you down. If you want to crank it up further, Unlimited Premium gives you 100GB of full-speed data before slowing you down, for $44 per month. If you're in a position to pay for a full year, it gets even more attractive. The 100GB plan averages out at $32 per month, which is pretty sweet. The Unlimited Starter only gives you two network transfers, not just per cycle, but forever. After that, they'll charge you $2 every time you do a network transfer, and there is a limit per month. Unlimited Premium give you unlimited network transfers. Unlimited Starter limits you to 10GB of hotspot data, it's 50GB on Unlimited Premium. Both come with an Apple Watch plan as part of the plan. There are roaming and international calling options as well. They offer WiFi calling, which means you can call anywhere in the world as if you were at home as long as you are connected to WiFi, but you do have to be in the US to activate WiFi calling, so if you are about to travel, be sure you've switched it on before you leave. This is great though, because I arrive in the US on Friday but will be home for Christmas, by which time I can use my US number as if I were still there. I haven't found anything I want to do with the iOS app that I can't, but it's not a super accessible experience. Many controls aren't described as actionable, so you have to guess from the context where you should double-tap to activate. On a couple of occasions, I did have to resort to enabling screen recognition. Nevertheless, I was able to sign up online, set up two factor authentication, and install the eSIM all from within the app. Of course the real test will be when I am in the US later in the coming week, but it's been a very good experience so far. Using a registration email to block-evade and harass a user is overstepping boundaries and unacceptable.
Registration emails are also extremely visible to admins, at least on Akkoma. IDK if it’s different on Masto.
This was bad because it represented an admin talking to a user post-block, in a way that constitutes harassment. That alone is more than enough. it would have been less bad if any the following were true (and not that bad if all were true):
the email sent was not harassment or continuing train of dialogue that resulted in a block.
the email addressed was advertised as a contact point.
Raeve had not made a boundary clear (idk if this happened).
In other words, saying this is bad from a privacy standpoint is misguided to me. it’s bad because it’s disrespecting boundaries.
For context, I have used registration emails before for technical reasons (e.g. if outgoing emails weren’t working I’d reach out to their registration email from a personal email). But I would absolutely consider using one to bypass a boundary set by a user to continue an aggressive dialogue with them unacceptable.
a staff member being allowed to violate their own instance’s rules in a way that seems 100% intentional (i.e. this wasn’t accidental contact) would call into question whether all staff are exempt from their own rules.

I wish there was a tool or DLL hook that translated calls from NVDA Controler Client to JFWApi, that is all. Sadly, no such thing exists, so unless I can recompile sourcecode, I guess stuff designed for NVDA-only won't talk to JAWS. Sad times today. ahah hugs back! Wish I could say that it is old, but they're like, pushing the edge with their new face-in view and things. Not to mention the Leasy scripts you can buy for JAWS. It would be nice to find something that makes the apps made for one or the other flip to talking to one they don't support, but guess in the computing world, we can't have everything either.

@WeirdWriter don't think there was ever a project that did it, to be honest. I tried to research the project by name on Google to see if it's even mentioned on mailing lists or other sources but nope. So I'm calling this one made-up until someone can confirm it did exist in the past or something.

yeah, I don't know of any either, however I got involved with a different side of the lenze, making apps which only speak to nvda, also speak to speech dispatcher on linux, and here comes what I did in this part of it, making apps which speak only via the tolk API also speak to speech dispatcher on linux. So anyway, this could technically be changed to speak the jfw api using com, because only the server has to, the dll that injects those functions uses websockets to talk to the server, so technically speaking this could even work network wide. Anyways, here are some relevant links, consider it prior art

I have no idea how com works in detail, what interfaces you have to bind to, if there's any docks about the com interface of jaws, but the rust server of nvda2speechd compiles on windows, there are com libraries for rust, you just have to either have typelib files from somewhere or a manual in which they're described, then the binding generators should do the rest for you
@TheQuinbox it works great! Only one minor downside where if multiple messages get sent to the controler it always interrupts (no message queuing when using JAWS) otherwise really solid in terms of performance.
@enne @TheQuinbox oh I wonder if it's just a mismatch between the controler client functions that are in newer DLLs and the slightly older one? Not sure, it's very minor but in my audio game, they use both polite and assertive-type notifications. The polite ones don't queue but instead behave as though they're assertive as well. Otherwise this is so solid and I'd totally do a donation to the slight / or the projects because stuff like this isn't two seconds of time to construct.

I like NVDA but there's for sure times when I'm switching to the other for testing or with Office products (then, ironically of course, NVDA is better for VS code, so you just can't win, heh)
@luiscarlosgonzalez @TheQuinbox so if you have your game or program, inside of it there's already an NVDA Controler Client 32 (or 64) .dll file. I would recommend backing that up or adding a .back to the end of the file, but then you need to paste the two corresponding files for either 32 or 64.

Free software only exists because its developers are in the privileged position of being able to afford the time for maintaining it. If a FOSS developer wants financial help, I think it's totally okay for them to ask for it. I think it's okay for FOSS developers to also have some "benefit". I agree with not soliciting reviews, being able to pay people to work on the project would make a lot of stuff easier and would lead to faster development.
For example, it's impossible to expect someone to do a code review in a short amount of time when they're not being paid for that work.

Gotcha, we have this new notification view in pidgin 3 and I've be contemplating adding a notification that shows up once a month or something in it mentioning donations. I’ve told LF (and others) repeatedly that “education” as the leading point is insulting. Many maintainers know exactly what they need to do, but they lack time and energy for it. Lecturing them, I mean “giving them skills”, is… rarely the need or solution.
But “education” allows LF (and friends like GH) to continue elephant-in-the-room-ing the actual solution, which is paying maintainers for the trillions of dollars of value they create.
I've been expecting something like this since the XZ hack, but still ... frustrated/annoyed/sad to see Microsoft and 13 (!) partners jointly announcing that their answer is to “educate” open source maintainers.
Or to put it a different way: open source maintainers are some of the most verifiably self-taught people in the history of the world, *when they want to be*. Happy to dig into tools, Google, books, mailing list archives, source code, stack traces, whatever. *If they’re motivated and have time for it.*
Saying “what they really need is… an online course” is… actually a tacit admission that what’s actually missing is time and motivation.
