So, despite all our problems in the OSS community, I understand why people put code on forges (github, etc) and have been doing so for years. I understand the collaborative nature of development and the varied array of motivations one might have to create software either in public, or collaboratively with the public.

I … cannot figure out why anyone is doing this with "AI" models. Why do people upload weights to Ollama or Huggingface? What is (are) the incentive structure(s) there?

@MichaelZ You do understand correctly. Unfortunately, the `adb backup` command was pretty much castrated from around Android 10 onward, and no replacement provided. So reliable backups cannot be done with that anymore.

If your device is rooted, Adebar provides replacements for backup/restore, too – otherwise, you can still use it for device documentation. Sorry, not much that can be done about that (apart from using a companion app, which I cannot provide).

I'm a cis woman, and *I* don't know if I'd neatly fit some bigot essentialist's 'biological woman' category. I've never had an ultrasound other than on my eyes, or had my chromosomes or particular hormone levels identified, and my body doesn't fully operate as advertised on the box for one reason or another. Just let people live their lives, fgs.

Possibly the weirdest planet yet discovered?

Newfound world 2M1510 (AB) b appears to orbit not one but two stars...and they are actually failed stars, known as brown dwarfs...and the planet orbits sideways, in a unique up-and-down polar orbit.

Honestly, the open standards internet is still there, beneath the surface. 😁 I've got my user generated content here on the #fediverse, my spoken word content in #Castamatic powered by open #RSS feeds and #Podcasting20, I read my articles in @NetNewsWire, again from regular ole RSS, and I can chat on #IRC or @matrix. It may not be the mainstream any more unfortunately, but it's still alive and going, protect it.

I've said this before but it's worth repeating: take a look at your federated timeline from time to time. Its usefulness depends on your instance and what servers it chatters with, but in amongst the kayoss, you can often find people you're actually interested in following. Do a bit of feed curation and pruning from time to time and the fediverse can be a really nice place. 😁

For those who are interested in free-threaded Python (peps.python.org/pep-0703/), a few of us working on it, and more importantly porting libraries to work with it, have set up a new Discord server, for folks to ask questions a bit more interactively. (Lurking is also welcome! It's amazing how much you learn by osmosis.)

Before you plug in your new Timex/Sinclair 1000, please take a moment to think about this exciting new adventure. We want to assure you that:

1. You will enjoy computing.

2. You will find it easy as well as enjoyable.

3. You shouldn’t be afraid of the computer. You are smarter than it is. So is your parakeet, for that matter.

4. You will make mistakes as you learn. The computer will not laugh at you.

5. Your mistakes will not do any harm to the computer. You can’t break it by pushing the “wrong” button.

6. You are about to take a giant step into the future. Everyone will soon be using computers in every part of their daily lives, and you will have a head start.

Folks having a rough day today, please enjoy this pic I got yesterday of my neighbor’s dog, Hazel, who is tiny and adorable and squeaks and weighs approximately 1.2 puffles (a unit of Floof Metrics), and loses every last scrap of her composure when she sees me coming, which is honestly the best reason to make friends with dogs, I tell you.

While we are waiting for the recordings from #fossnorth to show up, you can browse the slides from my talk "What comes after world domination?" that I did Monday morning.

What these slides don't show, is how my laptop died in the middle of my presentation so I had to reboot to get back into the game and continue... maybe not my greatest moment.

i know people hate to be told they're using software for something it wasn't designed to do but seriously, people who do a lot of long social media "threads" or widely shared announcements/media and want them to be accessible on the same site forever or else at least easily migrated somewhere else…

…a blog. you're thinking of a blog.
