Are there accessibility-related projects hosted on GitHub that you'd like to see get some attention? We're working on something for Disability Pride month, and I'd love it if the community got a say in helping to shine light on good people doing great work. #accessibility #FediHelp

@jscholes Happy to answer any questions about the project, do an interview, or whatever.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt That would be great. I've floated it by the person running the initiative internally! @jscholes

If you like science, sports, and smart critiques of gender, Rose Eveleth has a new podcast called Tested from CBC/NPR about the weird/horrifying practice of testing female athletes for "femaleness" -- and what happens when a group of runners are deemed "not female" and disqualified from participating in the Olympics and other competitions. These are not trans women -- they are AFAB but don't fit arbitrary norms. The pod is wild, fascinating, & heartbreaking. cbc.ca/listen/cbc-podcasts/173…

@mozilla are you mad? Seriously, this is not a metaphorical straw, it's a big fuck off to all the privacy sensitive users - no, actually to all your users - who supported you all these years and a clear, final renouncement of any remaining hope you will stop going full surveillance.

Congratulations to your new overlords, they are at least crystal clear in their goals.

Seriously? "we are working with meta" "the price for user is just a bit of privacy" "but look at these huge benefits for adviser!" "we believe more ads is better" "enable by default, b/c, else people may not enable it"?

I don't think there's a single resource with all of them, but usually the parties have lists of them. For example, labour.org.uk/about-us/sociali… or libdems.org.uk/aos

It’s official, my employer, a public university has filed a suit in BC Supreme Court against a student who is the “leader” of the PSE protest encampment on campus. She is an international student, a visible minority… and now the target of an expensive lawsuit by a broke University against its students.

(Edit: *students)

What an incredibly sad day.

I recorded a demo of the Roland VT-4, my vocal transformer of choice. roland.com/us/products/vt-4/ If You’re in the market for a box to make your voice do all kinds of silly things, you can hear what the effects sound like and get an overview of how it works. I am curious if anyone else has found a better thing with greater levels of customizability, that doesn’t sacrifice ease of use by making you navigate a menu or read a display.

I would also add that if all those people who benefited from Biden’s reforms could realize that and also vote in his favor, there would be no chance for reps. But, it seems as though many people who benefit from democratic reforms either don’t know it or simply don’t want to see it, and support the tall guy who promises everything and nothing at the same time. hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/112…

We are in the middle of watching a series of shamelessly corrupt courts declare Trump free to commit felonies with impunity. So yes, I have very, very little faith in American institutions as currently constituted.

RE: threads.net/@daveleebbg/post/C…

in reply to Julian Sanchez

I really cannot get over the level of brazen gaslighting here. Trump already sought to seize power after losing one election. He has just picked a VP whose chief qualification is having loudly declared he’d have been complicit in that scheme. He is openly boasting about his desire to weaponise the Justice Department to pursue political foes. If that’s not an existential threat to democracy, I can’t imagine what would be.

I donate a monthly amount to UNRWA and have been doing this since my government criminally withheld support of this crucial relief organisation.

It's never enough, but all bits help. Please consider a donation, thank you.

in reply to modulux

@modulux It feels frustratingly little, but it does make an impact. The Dutch state donated €19 million in 2023. If ~65,000 Dutch people would donate €25 a month, we'd already cover this completely.

I was hoping my party would organise a campaign along these lines, but instead we recently decided a blank anti-UN position at our recent congress. I'm sure the people in Palestine appreciate this principled position..

in reply to Emil Jacobs - Collectifission

A... what...

This is extremely unwise. Sure, the UN has tons of problems, but UNRWWA is the only organisation that has access and capacity there...

In case you wonder: "SkyTube Extra" will disappear from the #IzzyOnDroid repo with the next sync as it no longer meets the inclusion criteria (gitlab.com/IzzyOnDroid/repo/-/…). For details, please see github.com/SkyTubeTeam/SkyTube…

(the major culprit is the integrated self-updater with an update checker that cannot even be disabled. Such "updates" would bypass the extra checks established in the IzzyOnDroid repo – so if they're not opt-in with the implications made clear, they're a no-go)

Today, chatting on IRC, the topic of decorative fruit came up. I recently read that lemons, at least in Spain, were decorative originally, and only later people worked out they could be eaten or used for flavouring food.

Someone else pointed out a similar situation took place with pineapples in the UK and posted this fascinating article about it: bbc.com/news/uk-england-534328…

Pineapples were a status symbol, and were so expensive they would be exposed for show rather than eaten, until they rotted. There were pineapples for rent, and they required security and were at risk of theft.

What a world.

in reply to modulux

Matrix started off as a good idea. Implementations leave much to be desired though.
in reply to Pratik Patel

Just amused that, coicidentally, the IRC versus Matrix thing came up on the IRC channel I'm in spontaneously today. Pretty much everyone complained Matrix is slow and complex, though also admitted it has advantages like visibility into messages when one disconnects.

As expected, judge Cannon dismisses the classified documents case against Trump, after the supreme court hinted how she could do so.

Right this moment, we are witnessing what the future dystopian United States looks like: One law for you, another for the Emperor.

May American voters be wise enough to spot the trap they are about to walk into, before it is too late.

If you are concerned about PPA aka Privacy-Preserving Attribution in Firefox, please take a deep breath, and then read reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/…

It's posted on Reddit to make it easy for folks to engage in conversations. So I invite you to participate there if you want to. But please remember that Mozilla Employees with a fancy green badge on that subreddit are humans, too. :8bitheart:

in reply to Nari

@narinarinari Every time we put anything in front of the user after any updates, y'all on social media go full rage mode, too. No matter how we handle this, there's always a large group of people yelling at us.

Bobby explained in his Reddit post why we decided to make this opt-out. If you disagree with that, that's your good right. I can't convince you otherwise, and if you want to act like this is a big conspiracy, so be it. Nothing we could say will change that.

@Nari
in reply to Dennis Schubert

If you don’t want users to be upset at your choices, maybe don’t make choices that harm them? What’s more, there’s a pattern here. Mozilla only continues to exist because Google, the world’s largest ad company, keeps it alive. Mozilla has also recently purchased an ad company, so is actively part of that toxic market. And you partnered with Meta of all untrustworthy, data hungry ad companies on this nega-feature. Gee, I wonder why people are upset.

WTF

I can't even comprehend how many servers are protected by fail2ban, how many compromises are avoided, how many people who run hobby things all the way up to major sites that get to sleep soundly every night... because of this single project.

If you care about women's rights, protecting Medicare and Social Security, or safeguarding democracy on the whole, you should be concerned about Project 2025. Last week, writer Jay Kuo broke down this radical agenda for a second Trump term in a piece of essential reading from The Big Picture. thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p…
