Tak mi dnes prišlo vyrozumenie, že som úspešne absolvoval certifikačnú skúšku a vyhovel ostatným požiadavkám a môžu mi udeliť certifikát manažéra kybernetickej bezpečnosti... Asi mám povedať, že juhú, či?

No Thunderbird live streaming session for this Friday unfortunately, as some small renovation is happening in my apartment and the timing is terrible

Reminded today that "daemonization" and "PID files" are two extremely bad ideas that it is really surprising persisted for so long and were accepted so broadly by so many people (including me)
in reply to Glyph

I was lucky enough to be exposed to a better way, specifically djb's daemontools, in late 2001. Ever since then, I always used daemontools, or later runit, for services that I wrote myself. So I don't think I ever used twistd's daemonization. It's too bad that starting services without daemonization or pid files took so long to go mainstream, with the rise of systemd and then containers.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt The conversation was in fact about Twisted shifting focus from `twistd` (which daemonizes by default) to `twist` / `python -m twisted`, neither of which *can* daemonize.

I made two podcasts from the files of the MMORPG I play, Mist World, with the new Google Overview tool of NotebookLM. Listen to them:
eurpod.com/mist_podcast.mp3
eurpod.com/mist_podcast2.mp3
Both are a bit different. In my opinion, the second is worse, the more technical data and help I fed it.
Oh and that stuff about gender mentioned in the first podcast? It's an AI halucination since nothing about it it gets mentioned in the docs. Kind of funny as it's a classic bias almost.

My husband manages digital collections for the state historical society, and he's just had to rush in to honor a takedown request related to an immigrant oral history collection.

[EDIT: removing incident specifics, but we can all guess the specifics in this moment anyway.]

He's busy putting out fires and ensuring safety, so I'll say it:

This is horrifying. Fearmongering is middle-school bully nonsense. Stop being shitty to immigrants. Stand up for immigrants.

To the #FOSS / #FLOSS folks out there:

#FLOSS maintainers often maintain an archive of old, sometimes *really* old source releases (source tarballs, typically).

In this day and age, especially with existing git and readily available repositories with appropriate tags, one might wonder if maintaining an old archive is still useful, and why.

Anyone want to share their perspective on this?

(I have no particular opinion in the matter, so am all ears)

in reply to Richard Levitte

I expect my stuff to survive the current hosting plus that my releases often contain generated files not present in git that might be tricky to reproduce twenty years later

I recently had a client tell me my rates were too high and offer to pay me $1 a minute.

Okay, agreed. $1 a minute, based on how many minutes I trained to provide the experience and education needed to do my job. I practiced 2 hours a day every day for the last 40 years of my life. That's 1,752,000 minutes.

I also attended a university and completed a 6-year graduate degree. At 30 credit hours a year, that's another 10,800 minutes.

I also attended private classes post-graduation with Sir Wladimir Jan Kochanski. I won't charge you per minute for HIS experience, but my own study with him included 8 hours of study a day 5 days a week for 6 years. That's another 748,800 minutes.

So, totalling all that up, that comes to...
Just over $2.5 million dollars.
I accept cash, credit, or cashier's check.

I disagree with this guy that you can't describe images from WhatsApp. You open the message, find View Photo, and instead of tapping it, invoke Describe Image. It is very simple, and I suggest he didn't know how to do it.

I have a trip coming up. What are your must-do things as someone visiting Brussels, (maybe Ghent), Antwerp, and Amsterdam?
in reply to Ricky Mondello

@pilky Brussels: The House of European history gives a good overview of, well, European history but also this of EU, it's pretty interactive and available in all EU languages; Amsterdam: I can recommend the food tours from Hungry Birds: hungrybirds.nl/ - you will sample some of Amsterdam's local cuisine, not necessarily typically Dutch; the Ice Bar was fun too. Also be sure to sample some Surinamese food, most of all Sattay Chicken if you're into meat.

Dear {everyone who writes software that has logins or full-name usernames}

Please hire some people with diverse names. Stupid name rules like no spaces, no special characters, no lower-case starts to words in a name – let alone presence of so-called "conventional" name elements (surname, forename, middle names, etc.) need to be dumped in a ditch forever. #UX

I truly don't get how FedEx is still in business. This is my second package in 2 years that's on its 3rd delivery day. Not in transit, mind you, just failed/missing delivery attempts with no explanation other than "we'll try again." Guessing it's stuck on a truck circling Austin while they come up with today's excuse.

I'm sure other delivery companies have their challenges but FedEx ranks up there with the worst. My partner used them to send a Christmas gift to her sister a few years back and all that arrived was a busted-up empty box with a "Sorry for what happened to your package" note attached. Like, at that point don't deliver the damn empty box, just write it off as a loss! I can't even...

I have said this several times but it bears repeating now:

A very large portion of the Fediverse values tone over substance. "Politeness" and "civility" over what people are actually saying.

This leads to a constant background noise of just rancid replies that are all phrased in a superficially "nice" tone.

Justified anger and non-diplomatic push-back however is heavily policed and dismissed as "bad habits" brought over from elsewhere.

Unless this fundamentally changes, it will never be a place that's safe for marginalized people who have to stand up for themselves and face a constant stream of condescension, dismissiveness, and outright hostility.

A lot of the time it absolutely does live up to its reputation as a place where middle aged white cis men tell you how your perspective and expertise don't matter, and where you better watch your mouth when talking back to them.

Wasn't Thunderbolts supposed to be a TV series instead of a movie??

I used to like that most Brazilian doctors' offices have Whatsapp numbers, because I didn't have to call during business hours to ask for an appointment--if I texted in the evening they'd usually respond the next morning. But lately they've all been getting shitty auto-responders, so if I don't remember to text during business hours there's a good chance the human receptionist will never actually see my message. But there's also no way to find out what that particular office's business hours are

A new update to Leasey version 9 should be made available on Thursday with the following changes:

Word Quick Navigation Keys. Leasey can remember the state of Quick Navigation on a document by document basis.
Check the documentation for details.

Microsoft CoPilot. JAWS no longer uses Application Mode and instead uses traditional web page navigation. This prevents JAWS from moving into and out of Navigation Mode particularly in lists of items.
In addition, if you move out of CoPilot and back to it, the virtual cursor is located in the correct position on the page.

VLC Media Player. In JAWS 2024, the total and elapsed time scripts are now functioning again.

Emoji. When using the Leasey key then Control+Shift+E, the correct emoji character is once again inserted into the document or text edit area. This was broken in the previous build, 9027.

Outlook Attachments. When using Windows11, and the Leasey file attachments list, copying and pasting into File Explorer should now be working again.

Microsoft Word. The list of recent documents is now functioning.

A note concerning Enafore scripts.
These will not be included in Leasey version 9. While the scripting itself is of a good standard, it is difficult to imagine how anyone would want to work with Mastodon in this way due to focus refreshing and the fact that you need to work through a timeline in reverse order. These have been shelved for the time being.

It is envisaged that the next update to Leasey will support JAWS version 2025.

It's a Monday! Still thinking about last night's Hozier concert, so much fun! Somehow the opener (Allison Russel) was a lot clearer in vocals , which was a bit surprising- they washed out his voice a lot with reverb and you could hear the back-ups better, but those issues were not there when he spoke normally or they did a vocal duet. Of course he saved the "Too Sweet" and "Take me to Church" songs for last few, since everyone knows them, so it was a way to get to know his other music.

I've reached the stage of my life where my "n acute" shortcut was broken for almost an entire week, and I didn't even notice.

Apparently you're not supporting IMAP. Is your "desktop client" at least an actual client that I can use to download my mail, or just another Electron wrapper around a website that I can't use offline? Been trying to get an answer for that for a while now.

Sorry for all of the spamming with the writing prompts today, friends. Yesterday was busy, and I didn't have the time to post. And now that I've been thinking on the questions, my answers are quite verbose.

Honestly, by this point, the fact that I'm long-winded shouldn't come as a surprise. 😆

Happy Monday!

a good thing for a writer to be. You can't edit if there's nothing on the page, as they say.

I have to transport a 13U Server Setup from home to a closeby datacenter and I don’t have a car, how do I do this? Any suggestions? 😬
in reply to Robin Röper

rent a MyWheels or a Greenwheels car. 13U should fit into the trunk of a normal car, shouldn't it?

Also, MyWheels 🙄

At least the error message is very descriptive, not just typical something went wrong kind of thing.

Once again, I find myself pondering why rich people feel compelled to hoard money instead of feeling compelled to use it to help others.
in reply to Chris 🌱

from what I’ve seen it’s a mix of seeing others as undeserving of help, fear of losing what they have or needing to lower their standard of living, and a feeling that they’ve “done enough” because they donate to charities of their choosing
in reply to Chris 🌱

being rich is a lot of patting yourself and your rich buddies on the back
