I just realized Workbench is 2 years old 🎂
The first release just had a buggy GTK XML preview
It's a good reminder that
• Alone, I wouldn't have accomplished a 1/4 of what it is today
• The maintainer role is as much social as it is technical
• Making impactful things is a marathon, not a sprint
• Building software is an iterative process
The #GUADEC2024 call for abstracts for those looking to be *sponsored* has passed (due to visa reqs & travel lead time), BUT the call for both in-person (if you don’t need sponsorship) and remote talks IS STILL OPEN!
https://events.gnome.org/event/209/abstracts/
If you’ve been working on something interesting in GNOME or GNOME-adjacent spaces and can present remotely or get yourself to Denver in July, you still have just over two weeks to propose a talk!

"Free Software" is ambiguous
"Open Source" is not enough
Both terms also carry negative history.
I noticed "libre" is becoming more common and is well understood in several languages.
Maybe it's time for a renaissance with #LibreSoftware

Is the term libre as in "libre software" understood in English ?

Heads up to app developers: Flathub’s automatic build validation is more thorough now, and includes checks for issues we previously would have only flagged manually. There’s a chance that if your app has been passing continuous integration checks previously, it will fail now; here’s why, and what to do about it:

New post: https://www.harihareswara.net/posts/2024/trust-new-maintainer/ Whether And How To Trust A New Maintainer
What kind of trust does a project #maintainer need to have in a new co-maintainer? To get better at #opensource #sustainability, we need to improve at recruiting, training, & promoting new leaders.
I cover attributes to check for.
I mine 4 comparable situations for assessment ideas, & explain how to reduce how much trust you NEED to give by promoting someone.

Did you that calDAV has a journal feature? I use it to keep meeting notes stored alongside my calendar; no need to go hunting for notes when you can just click on the date the meeting took place in your email / calendar client! I've been using KDE's Kontact for this on my GNU/Linux PC, and I just discovered @jtx for Android which I use alongside @davx5app.
One trick to make your life much better as a maintainer and help contributors
Have a Makefile directive to run everything that runs on CI
`make x` is all it should take to verify the changes pass automated tests
Linter, formatter, sorter, unit tests, etc
If tooling is needed then add a `make setup` directive that takes care of installing it

I think I have spent more time listening to #podcasts than watching Netflix or Youtube during 2023, and I believe I'm not alone in this entertainment style.
I think we [collectively] really need to support #FLOSS tools that are used in consumption (and production and hosting) of podcasts. We really lack on that front.
The only good Podcast player I know is @AntennaPod , the best podcast hosting I know is @funkwhale .
Let me know if you know other FLOSS tools in this domain.

Remember to share positive posts, memes, etc. about open source things you use and like. A simple “I like this” or “thanks for working on this” can go a long way!
Happy people carry on using things quietly while negativity gets shared, memed, and shoved in front of folks who work on your favorite projects. One negative comment too often outweighs ten positive ones, because human brains are dumb.
Spread positivity, save someone from burnout.

The #EuropeanCommission is finally considering whether "#OpenSource software (#OSS)…can be used as a foundation for developing the new #publishing platform" for EC-funded #OpenAccess research.
https://op.europa.eu/en/publication-detail/-/publication/cc087fd8-82b3-11ee-99ba-01aa75ed71a1/language-en
Unfortunately, the new software would merely "underpin" #OpenResearchEurope (#ORE), not replace it. ORE is proprietary software owned by #TaylorAndFrancis. When the EC called for bids on ORE, it did not require open code despite many calls to do so.

How do open source projects get things done? How do they retain contributors, attract users, and make technical decisions? All this (and more!) falls under the auspice of "governance". Shauna Gordon-McKeon explores the power and potential in being thoughtful your project's governance, and how expanding your view of what governance entails can create a virtuous cycle.

It's frustrating when a new #opensource contributor vanishes. You can reduce how frequently that happens:
* Understand why they ghost
* Articulate your vision
* Set expectations in the contributors' guide, & in auto-replies/boilerplate replies
* Prioritize quick first-level reviews
* Follow up with "resources if you're stuck" checkins
* Build safeguards against cookie-licking

The combination of rapidly-improving technologies like GNOME, Flatpak, Wayland, and Portals also means our active privacy protections are also better than ever before.
I went on to write:
>If and when we are able to develop an open, peer reviewed, industry-respected method of responsible and privacy-first telemetry, we may consider doing so.
While that post was in the context of elementary OS, I believe every word I wrote.

I’ve spent a long, long time thinking about ethical software, the challenges we *necessarily* give ourselves compared to closed competitors, and crucially, how to overcome those challenges.
Four and a half years ago, I wrote:
>respecting your privacy is the ethical thing to do; users have a fundamental right to the utmost privacy, even from companies and products they trust.
That’s as true as ever.

I hope this can serve as the beginning of the ecosystem coming together to solve this unique challenge in a way that is objectively superior than any proprietary system—all with privacy as the fundamental principle.

This is your irregular reminder #Adobe are fucking dicks:
https://www.vice.com/en/article/a3xk3p/adobe-tells-users-they-can-get-sued-for-using-old-versions-of-photoshop
> Adobe Tells Users They Can Get Sued for Using Old Versions of Photoshop
We need #FLOSS tools to get to the point where they can replace Adobe tools. Open alternatives are great, but they are sadly not there yet to replace Adobe tools for professionals.
And won't be unless projects like @inkscape get enough funding to develop to a point of being viable alternatives.
Yes, it is in no small part about the money.
