Today’s social media status quo isn’t cutting it, so Mozilla is exploring an alternative here on Mastodon. In early 2023, Mozilla will be testing a publicly accessible instance in the Fediverse at Mozilla.Social. We will keep you updated, but for now learn more here: https://mzl.la/3BNXQMQ

welcome! Most mastodon clients require "https://" in front of the link to make it clickable ☺️
in reply to Mozilla

Great! (Pls edit post to make link work thx)
in reply to Mozilla

sweet, I'm glad to see Mozilla taking part in the fediverse. Now if they would bring back the phoenix name to something that'd bring me joy haha
in reply to Mozilla

Welcome to Mastodon! You should consider adding a verified link in your bio so we know this account is legitimate.
in reply to Mozilla

looking forward to it! I had such a hard time deciding which server to join, one run by Mozilla would have been a clear winner. If this goes well, maybe built-in support for navigating the Fediverse could be a differentiating feature for Firefox?
in reply to Mozilla

This is great! If this first step is successful linking Firefox identity to Mastodon Accounts and integrating to Pocket could be amazing….
in reply to Mozilla

Just wrote about trends and how #Mastodon is a better option (and why), check here if you'd like: https://boredmilieblog.wordpress.com/2022/12/20/ending-the-year-on-a-maddening-note-literally/
in reply to Mozilla

Oh wow! That's great news! We need more companies like Mozilla to host Mastodon!

Love this sentence in the last paragraph, sums up the problem statement well IMHO -

"In private hands our [social media] choice is limited, toxicity is rewarded, rage is called engagement, public trust is corroded, and basic human decency is often an afterthought."
in reply to Mozilla

What if Google or Microsoft want to have their own instances. Could big players force the little ones out, take it over and leave us vulnerable to another Musk?
in reply to Mozilla

how will you measure your success? I don't want to see this exciting Mozilla effort fizzle!
in reply to Mozilla

And the great Vivaldi browser has Mastodon built right in and their server instance https://social.vivaldi.net/
in reply to Mozilla

Great, but can we please have verified links on this profile for validation purposes? Thanks, and looking forward to see what develops ... :)
in reply to Mozilla

This is fantastic news. Once one corporation makes the move, more will follow. The fediverse is quite pleasant, and I can’t wait to integrate Firefox with Mastadon (albeit I’m on my app at present but the browser version is richer).
in reply to Mozilla

Is it official mozilla? There is no website verification 😶
in reply to Mozilla

Welcome! You keep the hope for a free internet alive, Mozilla.
in reply to Mozilla

You should verify through the org’s website: https://opensource.com/article/22/11/verified-mastodon-website
in reply to Mozilla

In what country is mozilla.social going to be hosted? It'd be interesting to know the applicable laws that would reign over that instance.
in reply to Mozilla

Welcome to the #Fediverse, @mozilla! Yeah, let’s get moving! 💚🌱

"In early 2023, #Mozilla will stand up and test a publicly accessible instance in the #Fediverse at Mozilla.Social. "

"Now is the time, as we’re living through the consequences of 20 years of centralized, corporate-controlled social media, with a small oligopoly of large tech firms tightening their grip on the public square."

in reply to Mozilla

This is excellent news. Hope more well known tech companies follow this trend.
in reply to Mozilla

dammit shoulda announced it earlier and I woulda created my account on your server.
Good stuff though Mozilla 🤜🤛
in reply to Mozilla

I'd be curious to see what's different. How does one create a healthy social media? Will it just be your own smaller twitter, with stricter rules?
in reply to Mozilla

Excellent! I think you have a brilliant opportunity here. It would be great to have easy access to federated services that cover the whole gamut of current #SoMe capabilities including being able to access all platforms from one place and choosing how to share data with those platforms, if at all. I really like the #Mastodon set up of protecting posts by only permitting searching by hashtag.
in reply to Mozilla

Very exciting development. Please make a splash page at https://mozilla.social/ ASAP.
in reply to Mozilla

this will need all the same oversight and compliance with EU (as one example) law in regards to content as any of the other major players. How does Mozilla intend to deal with that? Is there a big recruitment drive to come?
in reply to Mozilla

welcome - please verify your account so we know it's really you
in reply to Mozilla

Fifteen years late to the distributed social web party - and then not actually committing, just "exploring". For somebody who downloaded the early Mozilla nightlies via dial-up and got excited when it would load and render #Slashdot and stay up for a good 30 seconds before crashing, Corporate Zombie Mozilla is both ridiculous and heartbreaking.
in reply to Mozilla

Nice to have you on board @mozilla, but we need more than another instance:

"If you buy into the idea that #Mozilla should be spending resources on #Mastodon, at the very least [they] could do something meaningful like finance and supply labour to build better moderation tools, end to end #encrypted DMs or some other meaningful effort. Yet this is not what is proposed."

That's fantastic news! Welcome to the Fediverse!

And thank you for making the conscious decision to use the word #Fediverse, instead of the brand of just one particular type of Fediverse server among myriad others.

I've assembled a short list of platforms available to choose from here:

https://write.as/tallship/making-better-use-of-space

Particular favorites for many are those of #Friendica, #Akkoma, #Soapbox, #Hometown and #Calkey.

Don't forget to checkout other Mastodon forks like Glitch-Soc too 🙂

Mozilla and Proton are the two best companies to save the web
in reply to Mozilla

work with @Gargron on content moderation and features. Key features require technical skills; you handle that very well. Therefore, content moderation * will * separate @Mastodon ....look into Quora and Twitter (and their potential and failings). We look forward to seeing you here.
in reply to Mozilla

Great to see you here! The only browser I will use. I hope you guys can hang on.
in reply to Mozilla

here's hoping this gets the attention it deserves
in reply to Mozilla

the fact that Mozilla is doing this is great. I would love to talk someone at Mozilla about it on my podcast, if that's of any interest.
in reply to Mozilla

good! next step is firing Mitchell Baker to regain trust in Mozilla!
in reply to Mozilla

Welcome. Don't forget to add a link from your the social media links on the Mozilla web site - it's not there yet!
in reply to Mozilla

There are few orgs I trust online as much as @mozilla . This is great news.
in reply to Mozilla

woohoo! Great minds! We are a proud supporter of the mstdn.ca instance
in reply to Mozilla

one post, over 4300 followers and counting. I'd say your arrival is welcomed ;)

declares intent on #fediverse - https://blog.mozilla.org/en/mozilla/mozilla-launch-fediverse-instance-social-media-alternative/

With their track of incubating #RustLang I'm curious how this pans out.
in reply to Mozilla

This should be interesting.

Since Mozilla is also behind Thunderbird, I wonder if this means we might also see proper threaded reader support for social media, just like we had in the 90s?
in reply to Mozilla

what's the point of a "global" Mastodon instance, unspecific to any one community?
in reply to Mozilla

A lot of promises, PR talk and more blabla. But most importantly, what kind of instance/server are you going to be? Are you going to moderate?
in reply to Mozilla

interestong to see how this works out but is anyone else having trouble following this account?
in reply to Mozilla

Great news ! Hope Mozilla up owned instance of Mastodon in future
in reply to Mozilla

When you are ready, consider using this simple tool - https://Twittodon.com 😉

"In private hands our choice is limited, toxicity is rewarded, rage is called engagement, public trust is corroded, and basic human decency is often an afterthought." 🙏🙏
in reply to Mozilla

I've been on Chrome for a decade, but if Firefox builds in integrated support for Mastodon I would absolutely switch back. :D
in reply to Mozilla

How do you plan on instituting moderation in the ways that mastodon.social has been failing?

Will you be contributing to the codebase? It could use some thoughtful design at your caliber.
in reply to Mozilla

This makes me so, so happy. I've been a believer in Mozilla since the netscape days.
in reply to Mozilla

I am SO there.

♥️ y'all!

I already pay you, but I'll bump it. 😃
in reply to Mozilla

I've been waiting for something like this for awhile. We need your open source, people-first mentality on this problem. I'm hoping your reach as a global partner can make Mastodon relevant to everyone. . . we need everyone working together on alternatives to this rather stifling current environment. Was pretty horrified to see journalists thrown off the bird while criminals were welcomed back on. . . Here's to an anti-toxicity internet.
in reply to Mozilla

Is there anywhere in particular we can watch progress on this project? <3
in reply to Mozilla

Uh, the pretense that social media's problems isnt far right robots spewing lies, hate, anger, bullshit and pus, is pointless and strange.

And NOTHING done will stop the billionaires like Elon trying to destroy it if they cant take it over and make ot into Truth Social, as Elon has done to the late twitter platform.
in reply to Mozilla

Why would people trust your instance?

Remember Mozilla Persona?

Because I still do.
in reply to Mozilla

Hi there! It's early 2023, and I'm still excited about your plans. Do you have any updates for us? 😊
