Bluesky Connector

Hallo !Friendica Support,

Hello @Raroun hope you're well. every now & then, when i have joined a different #Friendica instance in the past, i ask this same question of its Owners / Admins. always it's the same negative answer, but i live in hope!

on Masto & Sharkey instances, if the Admins are willing, it is technically possible to add FOSS emojis to the servers. consequently, on many of my instances i've been able to include these in various posts when applicable:

:linux: :archlinux: :kde: :plasma: :zenbrowser: :floorp: :firefox_nightly: :firefox: :thunderbird: :fedora: :opensuse: :debian:

so... is there yet any way that such emojis can be added to your instance, please?

this is an experimental quote-share from my #Friendica #newsbots #Circle, whose default Permissions disallow anyone outside this Circle being able to see or access it. i have now done a one-off flip of the Permissions, just for this individual post, to Public, so...

Hello? (Hello, hello, hello)
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone home?
Come on (Come on, come on), now
I hear you're feeling down
Well, I can ease your pain
And get you on your feet again
Relax (Relax, relax, relax)
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts?

@Friendica Support hello, may i pls get some help on this query about #Circles ?

i have sub-divided my list of follows & followers into several Circles. one of these is for all my followed #newsbots. i have found to my chagrin that a basic design feature of #Friendica is working against me here. atm, if i read a particular newsbot's post whilst in my "Bot" circle, then decide to quote-boost / quote-share it, with some pertinent commentary by me, it's a complete waste of time... the default Friendica permissions / visibility feature makes my resultant post "Locked", ie visible only to members of this circle, ie, a heap of bots. no actual human will ever see it.

[how] can i avoid this? how can i manually allow any/all posts / replies / boosts / shares that i do from this circle, be visible across all the fediverse?

when circles comprise actual human accounts, this baked-in Friendica privacy concept makes sense. it is however actively unhelpful, indeed plain obstructive, for the specific case of a bot circle.

thx.

!Friendica Support hello. pls can anyone tell me if there is a way to delete in bulk all my friendica accounts contacts?

so far, neither within Settings, nor the actual Contacts section of the main UI, can i find any way to do this [repeat, i am asking about a way to do it in bulk, not merely delete one account at a time, manually].

thx.

Problem with second account, automatically switches to primary account

Hi !Friendica Support
I am the admin of my #friendica instance,I registered an additional account . But when I go to switch to my secondary account, it automatically switches back to the primary account .

A few months ago everything was working fine, then suddenly I had this problem, I thought it was an account issue and deleted it. But it always happens to me

What could it be?

VideoThe account is not even in the delegation

Hi guys,

I'm amazed how much work was done since last release and since there are quite lot of QoL improvements I would like to see an actual #Friendica release so we can upgrade our instances.

I don't expect any ETAs and such, but I think it's quite a while since last release and would like to point out that not everyone has enough balls to run on develop version

How Hubzilla 10.6 b0rked its own forums

Just because it works under your very limited and controlled lab conditions, doesn't mean it will work just as well under real-life conditions.

A few may remember the summer of 2024 when (streams) rolled out FEP-171b. It broke federation in every imaginable way because, as it turned out later, (streams) suddenly confused the many different IDs it had to juggle. Granted, the byproduct of trying to fix this was Forte, the first Fediverse server software to provide nomadic identity via nothing but ActivityPub.

Now Hubzilla rolled out FEP-e232. And there's breakage again. Not quite as badly, but in places that really hurt.

So the talk of the town in the Fediverse is Mastodon 4.5 introducing quote-posts. (Mastodon 4.5 allegedly introducing quote-posts to the Fediverse, and how that's wrong, is another story.)

Interestingly, almost at the same time, Hubzilla 10.6 was rolled out. Money quote from the announcement:

  • Implement FEP-e232 (object links) for quote posts

FEP-e232 Object Links in practice usually = "quote-posts like Misskey" = linking to the original with "RE:" before the link.

Apparently, rather than what Hubzilla had been doing since 2012 when it was still Red. What Friendica has been doing since its own inception in 2010. Namely insert a dumb copy of the quoted post into the quoting post.

While (streams) and Forte have been supporting FEP-e232 under the bonnet for quite a while while still quote-posting with dumb copies, Hubzilla has decided to go all the way and replace the old-fashioned Friendica way of quote-posting entirely with the Misskey way that's all the rage in the Fediverse now.

Yes, this has its advantages. If the original is edited, then the edit (in theory) is reflected in all posts that quote-post it.

But here on Hubzilla, this switch causes trouble.

Mastodon rolled out rendering support for Misskey-style quote-posts before rolling out quote-posts themselves, so those Mastodon servers that can't render these quote-posts are hopelessly outdated.

Hubzilla, on the other hand, rolled out Misskey-style quote-posts with version 10.6 while 10.4 and older can't even render Misskey-style quote-posts, not even when they come straight from a *key. In this regard, it would have been smarter to first make sure that Hubzilla renders this kind of quote-posts, then wait for a few minor releases and then change the way Hubzilla quote-posts.

You may see this as just a minor nuisance. But on top of that, it breaks Hubzilla's forums.

See, Hubzilla's forums are based on quote-posts. You start a new thread by DM'ing to a forum, and the forum will automatically share (quote-post) your start post to all forum members. If it's a private, limited-access forum, only the forum members are permitted to see the post with your quoted post in it.

I guess it's kind of obvious that this can only work by quote-posting a dumb copy of the start post unless a few more stops are being pulled.

Now, however, forums on Hubzilla 10.6 quote-post start posts by linking to the original. Remember that the original is a DM to the forum. As in only the forum is permitted to see it. You can click the link to the original all you want. But unless you run the forum, Hubzilla will not let you see it, not even with all the OpenWebAuth magic sign-on that you have on yourself as a Hubzilla user. In fact, I'd be very worried if I could see it now.

If there was even only one active forum on one of the two public hubs that run development versions, this critical bug would have popped up earlier and been fixed before it would have hit a release. But apparently, nobody is crazy enough to run a forum on a dev-grade hub, not to mention how few active Hubzilla forums there are in the first place. Seriously, I wonder if there's any feedback coming from the two dev hubs because I never see any hit the Support Forum. Does it all go straight to Framagit?

Good thing hubzilla.org is still running Hubzilla 10.4. hubzilla.org is not only the official Hubzilla website, it's actually a Hubzilla hub itself. The official Hubzilla website is built on a Hubzilla channel, using the Webpages app. And hubzilla.org is home of the Hubzilla Support Forum. It would have been a disaster, had this forum been broken, too.

I guess there's a hotfix due now, even if it means reverting FEP-e232 support (although changing the permissions of a DM to a forum channel would do the trick, and looking at how (streams) and Forte do it would be even smarter). And I hope it'll come before hubzilla.org is upgraded to 10.6.

By the way, while it's at it, maybe Hubzilla could also permanently set that GoToSocial/Mastodon flag that allows being quote-posted. I mean, if you come to a place that has been able to quote-post for a whopping 13 years, that can quote-post any public content from anywhere in the Fediverse with zero resistance, and that has no control over whether or not your stuff can be quote-posted (other than not posting in public), it's safe to assume that you're okay with your stuff being quote-posted anyway.

I have been up more or less for the past 24 hours straight trying to update my #Friendica instance, only to have a break several times to the point of even having the database messed up and needing to get my hosting provider to do a database import for me, what keeps happening is every time I do the update even though I have my customized theme completely renamed the update removes my top navbar so I lose all functionality to post or do anything it's very annoying I can't update because it breaks and when I try to import my custom theme over the broken it does not fix it I'm not sure what @Friendica Support has done to the RC to cause this and I wish I knew so I could update but I can't.

Friendica?

Read about it here and there...

I started following @helpers

There's a lot of content there. The Wikipedia article for Friendica was very 'sparse'.

#friendica #Wikipedia

@ondrosik I think this is a difference how #friendica generates the home timeline feed as compared to mastodon and other common #fediverse servers. Friendica also includes repies in the home timeline feed. There are apps that can filter out posts that are replies to other posts client side however TW Blue may not be able to do that I think.

@Friendica Support

Hi there,
some questions about the behavior of friendica with respect of preserving the content of posts from other servers and other #fediVerse platforms.

There are several options in #friendica to mark posts. There is staring a post or an answer, there is interacting with it like giving a thumbs up or done (like\dislike) and answering, saving to a folder and sharing or resharing a post. Answers can't be stared but saved to a folder, shared and reshared.

What happens when a post or an answer is deleted y the owner of that post or answer?
There are posts from other instances that still are preserved over here even tho they don't exist anymore on the originating server.
What happens if answers are deleted by the owner of the answer? Also, somehow answers to answers are related and they do disappear at least when an answer is deleted locally on this server. Is the same true if an answer is deleted by the originating profile?

Also, have there been changes on the behavior on these aspects in friendica or are their discussion about changing some of those aspects?

Frage | Friendica: Eigene Inhalte als RSS- oder Atom-Feed?

Guten Morgen zusammen.

I already pay 10€ per month for a quite generous hosting package, I already paid for the domain name, and I don't want another regular cost.

The idea of this proposal, besides giving others the chance to hear\see\brainstorm it also, is to:

  • Animate you to check #friendica out. That might give you an incentive to setup your own instance.
  • Have the easiest way to check out the back end.
    If I remember well, #weingaertner-it gives you the option of a monthly rent. So, suppose a 3 month "trail test"of friendica. That would be 15 euro.
    How much is an hour of your time worth?
    Setting up your own server means at least 8 hours of time, in over all terms. Clicking a weingaertner setup and redirecting your subdomain to them for a testride should be like an hour. If you follow thru with friendica, your personal server setup, profiles and created content wont be a lost effort as you take all of that with the DB onto your existing hosting package.
  • Support and foster the #fediVerse structure by supporting the weingaertner PYMES

It's a win\speedUp\win strategy ..

How to shrink your feed

I posted asking for help on this a bit ago, and while I didn't get any solutions, it did get my brain thinking outside of the box, and I found the solution, its easy, but proof that the UI, especially the settings layout really needs some work around here.

For whatever reason, the necessary setting isn't under the timeline settings, but Social Networks

The key setting here is Followed Content Scope, default is 'Conversations my follows started or commented on', but if'n you change it to 'Only conversations my follows started' if will only show original posts and boosts.

Hopefully this'll help others, I mentioned in a comment on my original post, but that could easily be missed, so here we go. Oh, and if'n you've any tag suggestions, send them my way, and I'll prolly add them.

Redundant Engagement Counts?

Diagram of redundant and mismatched engagement counts

How would people feel about a future version of Bookface removing the engagement counts from the Action Button? Now that the response info is reduced to an icon and a number the count on the Action Button with the same icon is redundant and makes the UI unnecessarily cluttered.

I know since the beginning of Bookface some people have found the engagement counts on the buttons too "busy" or "distracting" but before I remove them I thought I'd ask how people feel about that?

I don't know if anyone else has noticed it, but sometimes the engagement counts and responses don't agree. I *think* this is because the engagement counts are subtracting your own interactions? So in the screenshot above it's not counting my 2 comments and not counting my "Like" on the buttons, but is counting them in the response totals. Getting rid of the counts on the buttons would eliminate this inconsistency.

Thoughts?

Bookface 1.8 is Here!

This update has a LOT of changes and fixes in it! I think I got in everything everyone who gave me feedback asked for (check the README file "Changelog" section for details). Lots of attention paid to making buttons, tabs, and drop-down appearance consistent, and lots of new CSS variables for customization plus a new option for customizing Bookface (more on that in a moment).

Bookface 1.8 has been tested with both the current stable 2024.12 and 2025.7 Release Candidate versions.

The most obvious change you'll probably notice is that the responses below posts and comments now look completely different:

Responses below posts and comments

And below an Event Post:

Responses below Event posts

If multiple people engaged with the post in a certain way you no longer have to click the count to see the list, it's a popover that appears on hover (active on touch devices). This is a lot cleaner and more consistent with how these are displayed on other social media platforms.

You'll also notice that the Main Menu missing icons are in place. This is a change that's coming in the next Friendica release anyway, but Bookface lets you have it right now:

Missing Main Menu Icons implemented

Someone specifically asked whether the main navigation buttons could have labels on them:

NavBar Icons with Labels

I didn't turn it on by default, but nav button labels are now coded into Bookface and if you're using CSS variable customization they're easy to turn on:

:root {
--show-navbar-labels: block;
}

The label text is also customizable. Until now the only way to implement such customizations was either for a server admin to manually put them into the header or footer sitewide or for individual users to put them in a user content stylesheet just for your web browser. That's why I'm also releasing a new Friendica addon called "Bookface Custom" that, if your server admin installs it, allows you to customized every one of the Bookface CSS variables to your heart's content.

Get 'em while they're hot:

* Bookface 1.8
* Bookface User Styles 1.8
* Bookface Custom Addon 1.0

Looks like I picked the wrong week to start using Friendica.

Crashes across all interfaces, takes forever to load. Maybe, if you collapsed all comments by default, just maybe it wouldn't be crunching so hard. Bluesky integration fails completely. Oh well, seemed perfect for me, in the abstract. I learned quite a lot about the potential. Think I just need to make Mastodon my one stop-shop instead.

!Friendica Support

I'm considering changing the engagement details below posts and comments now that Bookface shows icons for them. The current appearance is a vertical list, which can leave a lot of unused space to the right of it, plus all the explanatory text feels redundant and visually cluttering to me:

Current Bookface engagement counts in vertical list with descriptions.

So I'm considering eliminating the explanatory text and going with a horizontal list of just names (for single interactions) and counts (that trigger the pop-over list) like this:

Proposed engagement list with mix of names and counts in horizontal list.

But that got me to an option with just icons and counts, which is similar to how Facebook and Misskey/Sharkey show reactions/engagements:

Proposed engagement with icons and counts in horizontal list

Which is what I'd prefer as it looks the cleanest and most consistent.

Thoughts on this proposed change? (I really wish Friendica had polls for this sort of thing!)

Postboxes Version 1.1

The Postbox and Zen Postbox add-ons have been updated with a bunch of new styles!

* Solid Colors renamed to match HTML color names
* 24 new solid colors added
* 5 new gradient backgrounds added
* 17 new pattern backgrounds added
* 11 animated backgrounds added
* Fixed the load order so it overrides Postbox styles in Bookface if present

The previous solid color names have been mapped to the new ones, so any existing Postboxes in your feed using the old names will still look good.

Solid Color Postbox Options

The gradient backgrounds were ones that got missed from the initial release and are similar to the ones Facebook used to offer.

Postbox Gradient Background Options

The pattern backgrounds all use pure CSS, no images, so they will render fast and do not incur an additional resource load from the server.

Postbox Pattern Backgrounds.

The animated backgrounds are exclusively available on servers that use either of the two add-ons. None of the animated styles are included in the Bookface scheme because some of them use SVG images. They use pure CSS animation as well, no JS code or animated GIF images.

Postbox animated backgrounds.

Notice how I said the gradients were similar to the ones Facebook used to offer? Shortly after I introduced Postboxes to Friendica the backgrounds on Facebook were coincidentally(?) completely overhauled. IMO Friendica now has a nicer selection anyway and even Facebook doesn’t offer animated post backgrounds.

Bookface Version 1.7 Release

These are the changes and fixes in this release:

* Restyled “New Message” button to make it more obvious.
* Fixed Profile Pics and Cover Photos not working in old iOS browsers
* Moved Postbox styles to the end of the stylesheet
* Minified Postbox CSS.
* Restyled Item Responses
* Action Buttons you’ve interacted with before now adopt accent color.
* Fix for disabled Action Buttons to make it clear they are disabled.
* Fixed issue with slow-loading secondary toolbar in Safari
* Updated with Postbox version 1.1 styles
— names of solid colors now match HTML color names
— 24 new solid colors
— 5 new gradient backgrounds
— 17 new pattern backgrounds

Some of these will be fairly obvious. The big one is that the Action Buttons below posts and comments used to change to the accent color on hover and there was no indicator if you’d previously interacted with any of them. NOW they have a slight shift in darkness/lightness on hover and the accent color indicates you’ve previously clicked the Like, Dislike, Share, or Event buttons (the exceptions being Comment or Quote). If a post's scope is limited (not public) the "Share" and "Quote" buttons are now obviously disabled by being faded out.

Action Buttons with accent color indicating previous interaction.

Engagement Counts also now show an icon indicating the type of engagement, which should make it easier to see what kind of engagement a post or comment is getting. And if there are 2+ the individuals are revealed in a pop-over box rather than pushing the entire layout down.

Engagement counts with icons and detail pop-over

The new Postbox pattern backgrounds are done with pure CSS, no images! So they’ll load and display fast and don’t incur additional server calls. Postboxes are just a nice looking way to dress up your text-only posts. Of course only Friendica users will see them, and only if they are using the Bookface scheme or their instance has installed one of the Postbox add-ons. The styling doesn’t transfer to other platforms (Note: there are still issues with Postbox posts shared to Diaspora and Hubzilla).

The new Postbox Pattern Backgrounds

Thank you to everyone who gave me feedback, reported issues, and tested things for me to help improve Bookface for everyone. :D

I could use some #FediHelp .

As my long-running readers are probably aware, I schedule a _lot_ of posts in advance. I use @bufferapp for this, and I am largely satisfied with this, except for one thing:

They have a fixed character limit of 500 for posts, and thus I cannot make use of the full 10,000 characters of my instance.

This is bad, since most of my scheduled posts are German folk tales exceeding this character limit, and thus I am forced to use screenshots instead of plain texts - which is terrible from an #accessibility point of view (yes, there are readers that can identify the text, but I'd rather use plain text in the first place). So I am looking for alternatives. Here are my requirements:

- It must have a web interface I can use on my desktop PC - I grew up with proper screens and keyboards, and while I _can_ use a smart phone or tablet for complex stuff, I do not find the experience enjoyable.
- It must have a calendar view instead of being a simple, scrollable list - I often schedule posts weeks in advance, and I want to be able to keep track of what is scheduled.
- It must make full use of the character limits of each instance.
- It must allow for scheduling threads - quite a few of the tales I am posting exceed the 10,000 character limit.
- It must work with #Mastodon . While I am aware that other #Fediverse systems (such as #Friendica ) have scheduling options of their own, switching to an entirely different system is a drastic step that I only want to explore when all other options have been exhausted.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

@Friend Icare #Friendica is using external media (like youtube) directly and does not "proxify" them. For YT videos there is or was an addon for redirecting it to an #Invidious instance. Since Google started blocking such instances, there are only a few working left. My favorite is inv.nadeko.net . So your administrator needs configure it unless not yet done.

For the other external references, I have no idea, just block 3rd-party cookies, I guess.

Does anybody know how homepage verification with Friendica works? I'm going with this wiki entry.

freifunkh@friendica.me has a homepage in its profile and the homepage has a link to the profile with rel="me" set. These are the results:

  • Opening the profile in a browser without login => homepage URL visible and marked as verified (✔️).
  • Opening the profile while being logged into Friendica (different server) => no URL visible.
  • Opening the profile while being logged into Mastodon (different server) => no URL visible.

Mastodon App even shows a warning, saying there is no verified link.
