Good news! Next release of Fennec browser will support UnifiedPush. And IronFox plan to do it as well!

You'll be able to receive push notifications for many more apps if you're not using Play services, thanks to web apps.

You can give feedback for your tests with different web apps on codeberg: codeberg.org/UnifiedPush/wishl…

do backends (in this case the homepage itself) need to support it as well, or works it like with every website which supports browser push?

@rick The backend needs to support web push, which is the standard for push notifications for the web

@rick Yes, that's great!

Some web apps, such as Telegram or Mastodon before version 4.4.0, use an obsolete version of the specifications and are not compatible.

And other apps, like hydrogen for matrix with its default gateway, only allow a few push servers.

So there will be some apps that won't work. Let's hope they will be corrected.

I think this is a big deal, actually. It's these sort of breakthroughs, which are like a sledgehammer smashing the chains of proprietary lock-in (you know, "#enshittification"). Nice to hear of the progress! I hope to eventually see videos breaking down how this is actually useful in the real world!
