I really don't think Carney knows what the words "nation building" means. "Nation building" is making big ambitious investments that make people proud of being part of the nation and unite the nation.

Public healthcare was a nation building project. The railroad was a nation building project. The Canadarm did some nation building. Weed could have been if Trudeau didn't fuck it up and put the provinces in charge. Dental care could have been if it wasn't just Obamacare for teeth.

Examples of nation building projects would be:
- High speed rail
- Free universal child care
- Massive investment in public transit across all cities (not PPP)
- A UBI
- A nationalized ISP with a mandate to provide high speed internet to all

No one is going to be like "I am so fucking proud we have invested in a copper mine!" or "Wooo! Upgrades to existing nuclear power plant!!" or "phase 2 of an LNG pipeline? Awesome! Phase 2, baby!!"

Those are not nation building. Those are just industry investment.

The Carney government's suspension of the EV mandate has nothing to do with “pragmatism” or “moderation” as I heard an interviewee say on the CBC this morning.

It's about the Ontario car industry realizing they don't make EVs or even Hybrids that can compete with Korea, Japan, or Europe (let alone China).

People want them. BC is at 20% new (the mandated level), Quebec is at 30%. Those are the #2 and #3 most populous provinces in Canada btw.

It's politics, and... specifically with Carney, cowardice, nothing else. BC’s Energy Minister Adrian Dix called it out

“I want to say this: Their target for this year, we achieved four years ago,” Dix said of the existing federal electric vehicle mandates. “The issue here in Canada -- and I think the federal government needs to engage in this a little bit -- is first and foremost with Ontario.”

This could be the NDP to take that role, but they are still leaderless.

#cdnpoli

Canada needs a real environmentalist party not just "conservatives who recycle" with a green label.

#cdnpoli

So one need to have 100K to run for NDP leadership. That's a mighty gatekeeping which mean that no just anyone (competent) can run for it.

That mean if you run, you are beholden to a financier. If that's not corruption then WTF that is?

Do they have a minimal number of Rolexes required too?

(don't point at other parties, it is the exact same shit, but they all currently have a leader, even incompetent ones)

So this "buy Canadian" policy announced by Carney - any more details on it?

We have the previous eye-popping increase of military spending to 5% of GDP, dozens of billions...is that going to be spent in #canada

Dozens of billions spent on US cloud services, SAAS, social media, ad purchasing, and consulting? Is that going to become "buy Canadian" too?

Is the Canadian govt going to drop Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Oracle, Deloitte, IBM, Accenture out of their procurements?

With the PM chasing the voters to the right he is telling the voters to the left to fuck off. Expect him to lose the fuck out of it. Because the voters to the right will never vote for his party.

He doesn't have a majority in Parliament. Now that Pierre Poutine has his job back...

Carney knows this. So why does he want more wealth inequality?

Austerity has *never* worked.

----

As the past four years and countless historical examples from the last 100 years show, while it makes sense for any one state to try and cut its way to growth, it simply cannot work when all states try it simultaneously: all we do is shrink the economy.

-

As Blyth amply demonstrates, the arguments for austerity are tenuous and the evidence thin. Rather than expanding growth and opportunity, the repeated revival of this dead economic idea has almost always led to low growth along with increases in wealth and income inequality.

How does walking back the mandate spur more demand, exactly?

"The mandate requires the number of new ZEVs (zero-emission vehicles) sold in Canada to hit 20% by next year, 60% by 2030 and 100% by 2035 in order to help the country hit its emission-reduction targets.

A government release explains that the EV pause and other measures in the strategy will... spur more domestic demand."

There is #noplanetb. 20% was already such a small number...

PM Carney to delay EV mandate, blaming Trump's tariffs.

PS There are OTHER countries that make EVs, eh. WHY AREN'T WE NEGOTIATING W/ THEM, or letting them expand into Canada?

This probably wasn't the day I wanted to read about Carney's efforts to protect the auto sector from EV rules : firesmoke.ca/

Canada delaying plan to force automakers to hit sales targets for EVs next year: sources

Let me get this. Those that don't want the EV mandate would be the one that would never vote for the PM party. (they got a pipeline with the previous PM)

Those that did? They can go fuck themselves.

The "trade war" is the new scapegoat for the oligarchish Government.

DST, capital gain inclusion, corporate taxes, etc. This is all areas where they kind find the money.

Instead the want to gut everything and replace people with planet-burining-sparkling-autocomplete...

#cdnpoli How about we DON'T invite the Project 2025 author to the Canadian cabinet meeting?
cbc.ca/news/politics/kevin-rob…

Still think Carney is on your side?

He 💩 dipped.

And just so we're clear:
What happened was that the fascist architect of Project 2025 opted out, not that our government wouldn't have taken the meeting had he been available.

They're still looking for "further engagement and discussions with him and other leading U.S. policy figures soon."

I keep telling people:

FYI the TFWP that the Harper government expanded to bring in more than 500,000 LOW-SKILLED workers btwn 2006 and 2014 to be exploited by employers in the restaurant and retail industries, in addition to the agriculture industry, etc.?

Remember the Harper government that Pierre Poilievre propped up for a decade?

It's 2025, and Canada is literally on fire. 1 in 4 Canadians can't afford enough food to eat. Housing starts are down, and are projected to continue falling.

What are Carney's priorities? Subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, of course. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Consultations?!?

Shouldn't it be a Crown inquiry into the #wagetheft and #exploitation of Canadians in the industry?

If the government is truly aware of the allegations, then they know the allegations go back AT LEAST as far as the Harper government... that means it spans decades... let's hear from every single one of them.

Didn't the Canadian public just give Air Canada $5.9B in a covid bailout the year before their execs got these salaries in 2022?

From Ben Thomson on X:
"Air Canada Executive salaries:
CEO M.Rousseau: $12.38 Million
CFO A.Kazzaz: $3.1 Million
COO C.Landry: $2.93 Million
CCO L.Guillemette: $2.74 Million
Exec VP A.Meloul-Wechsler: $2.0 Million

Full-time entry-level AC flight attendant earns LESS than minimum wage (27k/year before tax)

CEO makes 458x more than entry-level flight attendant

Time for AC executives to take a large pay cut"
#cdnpoli #AirCanada

That time I questioned the CEO of #AirCanada on the CUPE Unpaid Work Won’t Fly Campaign! It’s about Values— The Carney Government shows a clear lack of values by ignoring workers’ rights. Flight attendants work unpaid on average one week each month due to a loophole in the labour code. This is wrong! They could easily fix this by reintroducing my Bill C-415 from the last parliament. It’s time they supported workers not just talk about it. #fediverse #canpoli #cdnpoli #flightattendant

"Long before Prime Minister Mark Carney made sweeping election promises of harnessing artificial intelligence to boost productivity in the federal bureaucracy, AI programs were hard at work in the public service.

Whether it’s tax questions, addressing Phoenix pay issues, translation services, or drafting documents, it seems there’s an AI bot for that.

In fact, the annual report about the federal public service itself was developed with the help of generative artificial intelligence."

------

"Last month, PSPC’s Translation Bureau launched an AI translation tool prototype called PSPC Translate, spokesperson Jullian Paquin confirmed to The Hill Times.

The prototype was designed after a “noticeable decline” in translation request volumes, which suggested employees were using external translation tools like Google Translate and DeepL, an AI translation tool, Paquin said.

“To address this, the Translation Bureau sought to provide a secure, high-quality alternative that reflects Canadian linguistic standards and ensures data confidentiality.”

The tool is not intended to replace human translators, but to support the day-to-day communication needs of employees, and to reduce reliance on “unvetted external platforms," Paquin said."

Make no mistake. This is a USA automaker and oil company hit job on the independence and sovereignty of the Canadian economy.

They are trying to reverse the inevitable so they can continue their own businesses as usual for as long as possible.

It can't be allowed to happen. Canada is already lagging far behind other nations. Our Economy and our Society and our burning forests, will suffer if our government gives in to this pressure.
