We're very fortunate that all Czech e-books are sold DRM-free. You can read them on any device without any hassle.
Unfortunately, as an owner of an old #Kindle I'm pretty much forced to buy English books on #Amazon. At least #Calibre / #DeDRM doesn't let me down and I can still read them on any device.
I promise I only use the books to train my LLM. And, unlike Meta, I actually purchased them.
Does anyone have a reliable way of capturing #DRM #video from a browser that doesn't require me to sit and watch it with all my system sounds turned off and hope nothing pops up in the background an hour in? I would just sit and watch on the TV but channel 4 doesn't support audio-described content on their Fire app. So the rest of the family can enjoy it, as can 99% of the app's intended customers. Just us blind people left out again. Thanks, c4.
This is fine for those of us who don't buy from Amazon anymore, but if you have a standing library with them, make sure you get it all downloaded so you can break it. It's frustrating because you can't bulk download - I keep finding titles I own but missed grabbing somehow - but you have until Feb 26th to get them all.
Amazon is removing the ability to download purchased Kindle content, which is the only way to read it on my Kobo or elsewhere. What this means is I will no longer be purchasing (“a license to”–ick) any books by the mostly independent authors who exclusively publish there; just cancelled preorders.
I somehow just learned about the IETF's "Privacy Pass" working group, along with Google and Apple's respective implementations ("Private State Tokens", "Private Access Tokens"), and I'm so damn tired of DRM being the answer to everything.
Mozilla wrote a blog post in December of 2023 about why they decided not to implement it:
"#Deere abuses copyright law to force farmers to pay for official repairs — even when the farmer does the repair. That’s possible thanks to a practice called VIN locking, in which engine parts come with #DRM that prevents the tractor from recognizing them until they pay hundreds of dollars for a John Deere technician to come to their farm and type an unlock code into the tractor’s console."
