Happy mew year! Ever wanted to NVDA Remote into a computer on your iOS device? But whoops, forgot your keyboard? Or have a keyboard? Either way, NVDARC has got you covered! NVDA Remote Controller is a new app for iOS and Mac (as soon as it finishes reviewing) that allows you to control computers over the NVDA Remote protocol. It also offers an onscreen keyboard, as well as page swiping gestures and magic tap, for sending keys with the touch screen. This readme says: "• Keyboard input forwarding: Captures and forwards keyboard events to remote sessions (Windows only)". That's ... kind of important functionality to be excluding from a platform in a cross-platform app.
@simon This has been modified significantly by @Aryan with most of the modifications at github.com/aryanchoudharypro/N… specifically, the connection system is far better, reconnecting when needed, the shortcut can be changed by the user, which means you can run several instances on one machine and control a bunch of machines, there is now sound confirmation of a good many things, and the speech cuing issue is fixed. That last has been pulled into the main project but the others aren't yet on the gozaltech repo, so far as I know.
@techsinger @simon Oh gosh, that sounds cool but I typically use Linux with Wayland, not specific to the terminal, so I'd want an actual GUI keyboard hook.
@simon I tried to run this through Gemini a few days ago and it says it created a keyboard hook which would allow sending of keys from the terminal. I haven't compiled to test yet, but it claimed that it turned the terminal to "raw mode" and then allowed all keystrokes to be sent, as well as making sure the terminal went back to "cooked mode" when things ended. Again, no clue whether that's true. It first wanted to create an X11 keyboard hook, but I want something that can run on a machine which just boots to a terminal. Also, just to mention that, on another version, gemini ripped out the SRAL library and directed speech to NVDA controller client so that the program would work on Win7. That does in fact work, I tested it.
@simon @Aryan yes, it really is good work, I'm using it to control three machines, one virtual, two physical, and doing so from my main device. The dumb terminal/thin client surface go I have is now connected to four machines, including the one through TeleNVDA, and the only reason I don't have more connected is that I don't need more. All of them run speech and allow keyboard access with a shortcut.

@simon Gemini said that keyboard hooking through Wayland was difficult. It claimed this was for security reasons, you would know far better than I whether that's true. Anyhow, it said it couldn't do Wayland and wanted to do X11.
@simon It kept bring up ui automation function errors. I suppose it might not have been SRAL, but my very rudimentary looking into it showed it was always in that area so I just said "remove SRAL" which it did and talking directly to the DLL it started working.
@simon @Aryan You can already do that with Telenvda and core remote, though only for two machines at a time, no weird programs needed. As I said, with the companion, I really don't see why there should be any limit. I don't know if you've seen Across, but it's sort of like that with keyboard and speech, ctrl+win+left gives you 1 machine, ctrl+win+up gives you a second, and so on. Hitting the key again brings you back to the main machine and you can work on that one or work on one of the others. As I said, basically like free across.
@simon @Aryan It stinks, honestly, as does its support and licensing, but it can do it. The companion is far better. If there were a server for Linux and with yours for Mac, you could control basically any desktop OS.
It's an important piece, though. I would really like to run this on an ARM device, the keyboard functionality especially. I was thinking keyboard on an RPI and hearing through an Android device so we could have eloquence? Honestly, though, with NVDARC for iOS, I would just forget it if only the pauses could somehow be removed.
@simon @Aryan I have a feeling you'll be wasting your time, so I hate to ask. Having said that, just because you've followed their guidelines, what would you think of reporting it?
In all seriousness though. I have not used NVDA Remote. How do you connect to the machine running NVDA, say, from the Mac? Do you use smb, VNC RDP, or some other protocol?
@vick21 @ZBennoui you either need the client built into NVDA 2025, (see chapter 13 of the guide at download.nvaccess.org/releases…) the TeleNvda add-on for earlier versions github.com/nvda-es/telenvda or the original add-on nvdaremote.com Each of these work as a server or client, depending on the settings. As long as you have a method to connect through firewalls, whether on the LAN or VPN, you can connect directly. If you can't, you can use the public remote servers, nvdaremote.com, remote.nvda.es, and some others, or set one up yourself. It has nothing to do with the other remote protocols (VNC/RDP/Fluid/whatever), you can use those if you want but need not.
@vick21 @ZBennoui Sorry, hit enter too fast. Once you have some sort of controlled machine set up for NVDA, with any of the three methods I spoke of earlier, NVDARC will connect as a client to that machine and things are up and running.
@techsinger @vick21 @ZBennoui Is this bi-directional yet? I've got the iOS and Mac apps, can control Windows from either of those, but can I make Windows the controlling computer and make Mac or iOS the target? Any help appreciated, if it's possible I'm clearly missing something.
From what I understand, this is intended to control the machine on which NVDA runs. I mean, the protocol is not set up to control VoiceOver. That's how I read this. :)
@vick21 @Scott @techsinger @ZBennoui iOS isn’t possible because the system is too locked down, afaik there aren't any remote control apps even for sighted people other than the screen sharing feature in facetime. As for Mac, NvdaRC does in fact let you control it, assuming you have the latest version in the settings you can decide whether the Mac should connect to an existing server or host one itself. It gets speech by periodically checking what the last spoken thing was through scripting so it may not always be as seemless as rim or catch if VoiceOver repeats the same message multiple times without saying something else, and you have to use CTRL+Option as the VO keys. Other than that it works way better than it has any right to as if NVDARC wasn't already one of the killer apps of the year for me even though it just started
NVDA-RC on Mac can be controlled by any NVDARemote client as of now. The next release of NVDA-RC for Mac will also include it's own NVDARemote server, so you don't have to connect through another relay.
If you want to control a Mac from NVDA-RC on iOS, and you are using a hardware keyboard, you'll need to disable Voiceover on iOS. Otherwise, keys won't pass through.
I am currently typing this from NVDA-RC on my phone, controlling Tweesecake on a Windows PC 500 miles away, but could just as easily be controlling my Macbook Pro.
I am using a locally hosted NVDARemote server on a Raspberry Pi, to which I am connecting over Tailscale, because I don't like using NVDA's built-in server for multiple reasons, so I would probably also do the same with NVDA-RC for Mac. I'm using Tailscale as I am the only user of this server, and it has no need to be directly exposed to the internet.

In this episode, Levi Gobin demonstrates screen sharing with VoiceOver on macOS. Levi first shows us the Screen Sharing settings in VoiceOver Utility, then demonstrates controlling another Mac using the Screen Sharing app.

This works so much better than NVDARC ever will, and in fact I only recommend NVDARC if you want to specifically control a Mac from a Windows PC or maybe an iOS device. Otherwise yes, use this screen sharing feature, you'll have lots better luck with that.
Yep just found that in the Settings. I've created a keyword and put a relay in etc. Now what? It didn't connect and I don't see a new machine or new entry after closing settings. @techsinger @vick21 @ZBennoui

@chikim @vick21 @Scott @techsinger @ZBennoui Oh yeah, that too. Assuming both you and the other person/Mac are on Mac OS 26, this is the way to go. I recently did a nearly 4-hour tech support session this way. 2 things to be mindful of, on-top of the requirement to be on the latest OS, if you connect to another person, it also automatically establishes a voice call and there's no way to opt out beforehand, other than muting your microphones after the connection is made.Said voice call also ducks all other audio for both of you except VoiceOver and the other person and this was the really annoying part of us because we wanted to use a different app for communication. And speaking of sound, it's not transmited, you only get the other person's VoiceOver speech so that's something else to keep in mind. On the flip side if you're helping a sighted person, even if they're not using VoiceOver, you can turn it on remotely in a way that they won't hear the speech or see the cursor.

Thanks, got it working both ways now, it's wild! One unexpected thing was that when I'm on Windows controlling Mac, hitting CTRL doesn't silence my local voice. It does pass through to the Mac and silence VoiceOver. I guess that surprised me because speech interrupt seems to work when I send VO navigation commands, when I move with arrows or type or whatever else, so it felt weird that CTRL alone didn't interrupt the current utterance locally. @techsinger @vick21 @ZBennoui
@Scott @techsinger @vick21 @ZBennoui All that crap I have to handle manually, because VoiceOVer literally only sends the string. In the build I just now pushed, control will interrupt the speech, but it won't pause it because there's no way to actually detect if VO is paused or whatever, so it just cancels. Hacky, hacky junk, but better that than not being able to interrupt I think.

I have a Bluetooth keyboard with a full number pad on it. However, my zero key on the number pad is not interpreted as an nvda key. even when NUM lock is off. How can I fix this?
@simon Not really sure what happened there, it worked with 2024 and above and handled pitch changing for caps, as I understand it. @Aryan told me the source of that wasn't available
I never ended up needing to run it, I may say, I was running 2023, but I did keep a copy in case other people wanted the pitch changes. Again, this is all @Aryan project and it just works. The original didn't have cuing. This stuff has that, notifications of send/unsend keys, and NVDA sounds if you put them in a sounds folder in the program folder itself.
oh, and I should mention that @Aryan granted permission for me to send the binaries out if I wanted, just to be clear, and you already have the source.
that's also @Aryan the original had the ctrl+win+f11 shortcut hard-coded. The shortcut setting, whether from command line or from the program's own screen, wasn't in the original project.
@techsinger @Aryan Okay, here's a noobie question for NVDA remote. If you don't want to go through the remote server, do you just point NVDA remote to a local IP, or do you have to run a local server?
Oh my goodness this NVDA remote controller thing is going to be incredible. I've already joined the beta and will give it a try as soon as I get home. I hope this doesn't run into any issues when you try to get into the app store. Thank you!
Sorry to trouble you, but is the mac server supposed to work with the companion? When I try to connect, I get "SSL handshake failed: SSL - A fatal alert message was received from our peer". Any idea why this might be and are there any logs I can see on the mac side?
@techsinger I'm not sure. It works with stock NVDA Remote, not sure why it doesn't work with the companion. I also ran into this. I'm assuming it's a bug with the companion.
Thanks as always for the quick answer. If I may ask, is it expected that it would work when connecting through a server? It did connect through a server, just not when I tell NVDARC to self-host. I don't have your source, of course, but I asked Gemini with the companion's source and it gave the obvious answer (the protocols/fallbacks are different). I had it do some stuff but was only able to change the error, so it may not be that.
oh, and another suggestion, if I may. If I turn off "to be controled" when I am connected, it may be an idea to warn "you're connected, do you really want to turn connection off? You'll have to turn it back on from the mac if you want it back on.". It would help non-mac users like me who hit vo+space on the wrong thing if we're away from the machine. TeleNVDA does it, but I'm not sure about the core functionality.

Who doesn't like #reverb on their tracks? I sure do. But what has frustrated me for the past 2 years of using #BitwigStudio is that the stock reverb device has felt not as smooth and silky, or easy to manipulate as I'd like. The Lexicon 224 sound is something to strive for, and those clever engineers found a way to make an incredible sound with not amazing spec digital audio (12-bit with a max frequency of 10,400Hz).
I think the secret sauce is the selective bands and delay times where you can have the the reverb swell into brightness or dwell into darkness with some simple tone controls.
I have found that if you stack two Bitwig Reverb devices in an FX-3 Multiband Device on the Low and Mid bands that you can get a really sweet sound. Here is my example with some Airwindows to round it out.
