I'm not to the point of moving off Firefox, but I'm surprised at getting such an early crash on this version. It's been fairly stable for me over the last 2-3 months, I'd say. Hopefully it was just an unusual event.

My drawings of a few types of infinite series from 2019… The top left includes the Devil’s Staircase function, a continuous function that is constant almost everywhere. The top right is inspired by #Escher; the bottom left includes a Sierpinski triangle, and the fourth is inspired by Diego Uribe’s book “Fractal Cuts.” Each #doodle is about 3.5” by 5.5” with ink and colored pencil on paper. The dots sparkle in mica paint. #fractal #math #MathArt #ColoredPencil #doodle #microbes #ScienceArt #art

A weird tale of censored swearing in a ringtone, and why I always prefer original ringtone files over recordings
For a long time, I've wondered if any company has shipped a ringtone with swearing in it. I've still yet to find one, but this comes pretty close. The Telson Electronics TD-C6850 was dumped recently. Among its many ringtones, there's one with a sample of someone saying "everybody fuck now," in the style of the intro of C+C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)." "Everybody fuck now" may or may not be good advice, depending on your viewpoint, but clearly Telson Electronics, or the ringtone provider they licensed from, didn't think so, so the sample was censored. It was censored, not with a bleep, or the "fuck" being muted, but by arranging the song in such a way that the sound never gets a chance to fully play. On the first play, it gets cut off by a drum loop just before it has a chance to reach the word "fuck," and every time the sample plays after that, only the word "everybody" gets played. If you just had the phone, you probably wouldn't have noticed this, but since the original MMF file has been dumped, it's possible to view the samples contained in it, and as a result, the uncensored version of the sample can be heard. Here's the original ringtone (unfortunately I don't know its name): dropbox.com/s/l81vqewoz8i5utm/…. And here's the sample they didn't want you to hear: dropbox.com/s/vaq4tsxk3r82s5k/….

What you see on this photo is not from the Empire Strikes Back.

No, it is German police protecting a coal mine excavator in #Lützerath - a village planned to be demolished by the energy company RWE to extract coal that is not even needed for the energy security of Germany.

The Rust Foundation posted the announcement, so now I can officially™ say I'm helping with the Rust Language (for a short period of time): foundation.rust-lang.org/news/…

"Wait, which one are you in?"
This one:

To reduce developer boilerplate and viral trait proliferation through the construction of an interface that can be used from const fn, generic functions, Trait implementations, and procedural macros in Rust, and to better perform compile-time introspection of structs, enums, functions, and other module content.

"But aren't you working on C?"
Yes. And also C++. Strip off enough syntax and they start blending together.

"That blurb description doesn't make sense to me."
It will. Soon™. We'll talk about it more in the coming months as the work gets underway! Inevitably you'll hear me screaming On Here™ about this or that in rustc as I experience all the fun growing pains but no-longer-kept-private.

Thanks to the Rust Foundation, I've received a grant for maintenance of the Rust Playground. What I **really** want to do is turn that into more playground contributors!

Alright, trying to create a game on Storium. No idea if I'll manage to do something good with it or get enough characters, but if you think you're curious, check it out: storium.com/game/new-blood

Evropa se chce prosadit na poli výroby čipů. 📲

Nový Evropský akt o čipech chce vrátit výrobu těchto nepostradatelných součástek do Evropy. K roku 2030 má Evropa zdvojnásobit svůj stávající podíl na trhu s čipy na 20 %. ✅

In that context I'm just a "user" – I don't host any XMPP/Matrix server, nor a bridge or the like. I use Threema & Conversations for communication, and didn't plan for a 3rd messenger just to participate in a single room – so I was just wondering if there might be a bridge, especially as the other two channels are bridged to IRC. I still can reach out personally to you, Sylvia etc. by other means should it be needed. Or open a confidential issue in eg. the admin tracker should I need to 😉

Stating the problem in this way is not very useful. Nobody would like their device to offer absolutely no privacy (e.g. everyone can browse your filesystem), absolutely no security (publicly available shell), or no freedom (every command or action needs third party approval). A certain amount of each is essential. A better question would be how much of each is a hard requirement for you and how much is merely nice to have.
in reply to Purism

All three are indispensable and interdependent:
- How can we know it's truly private unless the code is open and free?
- If your identity and data isn't private, will you be able to exercise your freedom without fear?
- How can your data be secure if it's not private?

"Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

I reached out to the architect of the original Open Gaming License, former VP of Wizard of the Coast, Ryan Dancey and asked his opinion about the current plan by WotC to 'deathorize' the current OGL in favour of a new one.
