I find it annoying that we're having to add randomness in more places for security reasons. Another example is DoS-resistant hash tables. It takes us further away from the comfortingly simple idea that computers are deterministic machines that we can fully understand and control. And of course, it's another bit of increasing complexity that keeps the hardware upgrade treadmill going.

I'm aware that the "cranky old curmudgeon" side of me is dominating this morning. I have to remind myself to be eternally optimistic, to keep looking forward to more exciting things we can do with technology, especially assistive technology, rather than looking back to a simpler past. Regardless of whether such an attitude is grounded in reality, it's better for productivity.

Da hakte wohl wieder was.

in reply to Gerhard Hallstein

in reply to Gerhard Hallstein

I acquired (with help) a killer audio cassette digitizing rig, and then IMMEDIATELY had to spend over 2 months digitizing 90+ cassettes from the 1999 Game Developers Conference (via a slow-and-steady workflow that got the job done without being too disruptive to any other work I was doing).

So, here we are, it's done. Go enjoy 70+ hours of presentations about all aspects of game making and producing, in 1999.

To avoid any possible doubt about this, when Tusky suggests hashtags **it is using your instance's "search" feature** to get the first 10 hashtags that start with whatever you have typed so far.

So those hashtags **are** suggested by that instance.

github.com/tuskyapp/Tusky/blob… is the relevant code if you or anyone else needs to verify this.

You can also go to mstdn.ca/, search for "transrightsare" (without logging in) and see the same results.

Ever heard the term "scratching your own itch"? It means: doing something out of motivation to solve a personal problem. Rafael Lima came across a limitation in #LibreOffice, and helped our community to fix it! Learn more : blog.documentfoundation.org/bl… #opensource #qa

Are you still using the official Mastodon app? You don't have to!

There are loads of brilliant third party apps which work with your existing Mastodon account.

Unlike Twitter, Facebook etc, Mastodon uses open standards, which means third party apps can do everything the official apps do and more.

There are links to third party apps on the official Mastodon site, just scroll down past the official ones:

Here’s how I used AI to clone a 60 Minutes correspondent’s voice to trick a colleague into handing over Sharyn's passport number. I cloned Sharyn’s voice then manipulated the caller ID to show Sharyn’s name on the caller ID with a spoofing tool.
The hack took 5 minutes total for me to steal the sensitive information.

So, how do we protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our organizations?
1. Make sure the people around you know that caller ID is easily faked (spoofed) and that voices can also be easily impersonated.
2. If they receive a dire call from “you”, verify it’s really you with another method of communication (text, DM, FT, call, etc) before taking an action (like sending money). Kind of like human MFA.

Some suggest setting up a secret “verification word” with their folks ones so that if someone impersonates & demands money/access etc you can ask for the verification word to see if it’s a real crisis. This won’t work for all people but could work for some. If it’s a match, use it.

In general, I recommend keeping advice simple: if premise of call is dire use a 2nd method of communication to confirm a person is in trouble before taking action (like wiring money or sensitive data). Rapid text, email, DM, have others message repeatedly — before wiring money.

Bottom line is:
Scammers use urgency & fear to convince victims to take actions (like sending money, data, etc).
If premise of a call, text, email, or DM is too dire (or too good to be true), that’s a likely scam.
Use a 2nd method of communication to check it’s real before taking action!

Oh wow, Stalker and Solaris are just on Youtube for free, officially uploaded by Mosfilm, the original production company. They've got a bunch of other Soviet films up there too.

I am going to do an experiment right now.
I'm going to do a live stream right now of me telling a random story, and I will try to use my harp as well.

Also, anyone in chat could suggest things for the story, I think that could be fun. (That doesn't mean I will use all suggestions, of course, but well...)

I had a drive exactly like this, but mine was a 4TB Extreme not a pro. Replaced it with a different one with a better firmware and for the last 6 or so weeks, perfectly fine. The last one died within 5 days. Replaced the data, 5 days later, dead. Sent it back. I don't know if that's an older, or newer drive but either way it's not my friend. This one at least is behaving itself.
