Dear followers, some of you may know that there is a state in Brazil suffering from a severe climate catastrophe. Well, this state is called Rio Grande do Sul, and I live here. We've been dealing with almost 2 weeks of heavy rain, which made many rivers and lakes to flood, one of them in my hometown, the capital Porto Alegre. Many of my friends had to abandon their houses and some of them lost everything. Since a decade ago we've been dealing with a extreme neoliberal agenda that promoved heavy economic austerity in the capital and in the whole state. Now, the government doesn't have resources to save and protect the people for the next calamities. We are on our own. So, I'll post here a link of a very respectable social organization from Brazil, the movement for homeless workers (MTST) which is accepting international donations. THIS IS A SERIOUS POST, NOT A SCAM, you can search the topic on your own if you want.

Here's a high-level writeup of what I've been up to at work for the past year and a half. I'm excited to be able to talk about it, and even more excited for what's to come next. github.blog/2024-05-07-how-wer…

Today I thought about the classic binary search algorithm for the first time in months at least, and possibly years. I think I'll be using it in my GTK AccessKit integration. I vaguely remembered someone writing that nearly all binary search implementations are broken. I think this is the post: research.google/blog/extra-ext…

And since that post mentions the book _Programming Pearls_, I was pleased to find that the second edition of that book is available as a DRM-free ebook: informit.com/store/programming…

I know I shouldn't always immediately jump to this mindset, but my first instinct is to wonder how relevant a book written a quarter of a century ago will be today. The landscape has changed so much in terms of how and where we work, the tools, techniques, and languages available, computing power, and so on, even if underneath it's all based on the same fundamentals.
in reply to James Scholes

@jscholes No, I was thinking of reading it to look for things I can practically apply. The fact that it's been so long since I even remembered binary search makes me think that I've spent too long immersed in the incidental complexity of real-world software development, especially high-level product development, and that I should get back to the fundamentals.

Think of the billions of Apple devices that shipped with Apple logo stickers in the box, stickers that for at least some billions of users were just something to throw away. With the new iPads, Apple has finally stopped including the stickers and it is a relief.

Second blog post on the #moxxy UI! Unfortunately I've had a very busy month and don't have much new to report. Hopefully I'll have more time in May to work on new screens. #xmpp #penpot #ui

Judge Cannon's move today is infuriating, but completely expected.

Now it's Smith's turn to take the fight to her. Here's a helpful explainer on how he can ask to have her replaced; the difficulty (but not impossibility!) he'll face in doing so; and why, in light of the Constitution's double jeopardy clause, it's absolutely vital that he move to DQ her now: thebulwark.com/p/what-it-would…

Do take the time to read this brilliant piece.

It contains excellent explanations on the spread of COVID mutations/variants, why vaccination alone isn't the answer, why we should continue to mask and negative communications.

This is what 45 years of spent nuclear fuel looks like safely stored at North Anna nuclear power plant.

Each cask helped avoid more than 3 million metric tons of emissions and all of them helped generate 600 TWh of clean electricity!

And we're not done with it: this is future fuel for breeder reactors. The resulting actual waste is around 1% in volume and remains radioactive for just 300 years.

Can we store something safely for 300 years?

Yes we can.

Let's recycle this ♻️

Beskydy mountains, below the ridge we meet a spotted newt. There's still plenty of water here. The ridge of the mountains catches the clouds, there is moss everywhere, beautiful shades of green around us. Green light, the way the sun shines through the young leaves of the beeches. It's been like this since the end of the ice age, at least 10,000 years. In a few decades it will probably end, this type of forest will not survive the temperature rise and water shortage due to climate change.

Reading a bit about diacritics, I learned of the existence of lexical sets.

Lexical sets are sets of words which share the realisation of a phoneme in most accents of a language. They're useful in describing phonemic features without using special symbols, and they avoid the phoneme/phone distinction (mostly). They can also help characterise accents by determining whether certain mergers exist, for example whether north and force are pronounced with the same or a different vowel.

Each set contains a number of exemplars, and is quickly referred to by a representative word. Typical lexical sets in English: kit, dress, trap, lot, strut, foot, bath, cloth, nurse, fleece, face, palm, thought, goat, goose, price, choice, mouth, near, square, start, north, force, cure, happy, letter, and comma.

These packages had stickers? I never bothered to even empty that envelope of paper in any of the Apple packaging since I started buying Apple products, the only exception being the SIM card tool when I still needed it. "To me, the latest is the latest my OS provides me. If #curl maintainers dont care about pushing the latest into the OSes they support, it's not me to blame. I think curl maintainers should push Centos to provide the latest to all users. What's the purpose of you fixing multiple bugs and security holes if you dont spend time to make it available to the broader audience?"

We are obviously all just too lazy.
