Thanks to all you developers out there adding brand colors to your apps over the past months we're almost ready to launch featured banners ✨

If you're an app maintainer and haven't done this yet for your app, here are the docs: https://docs.flathub.org/docs/for-app-authors/appdata-guidelines/quality-guidelines

To make it more interesting we're setting a deadline! We will be launching the new banners on April 20th, so for the possibility to be featured during the first week, update your apps today :)

Just bought a #DELL 3190 laptop, new for $150 (11.6" screen, 64GB eMMC). It's fully supported on #Linux, and even if it has a Celeron N4120 CPU and only 4 GB of RAM, it'll work fine with #Mint, or #XFCE (and #Gnome/ #KDE if you don't mind some minor lag). Not opening too many browser tabs will ensure that the swap file won't get used too often.

If you're on a tight budget this is a good option, as it also has great battery life too at 10 hours with Linux.

I love how on #macOS when you intend to move a bunch of files to a folder, and when one file with the same name already exists in the destination, you're only given the option to stop the entire thing, to replace the existing file, or move anyway under a different name. Not a single option that just... idk... skip moving that one (or however many affected) file maybe? The best thing is, that stop option, the dialog that asks you gives you a checkmark option to "Apply to all" (unchecked by default) - bcos of this, a user unfamiliar with #Finder's brilliance might assume that "stop" simply means "skip" commonly found on other OS-es including #Windows and #Linux for file operations such as moving/copying, 'cept not, "stop" literally just stops doing anything.

Oh, also, you can't even enjoy what you have found to be so common such as doing a shift-click selection on Finder... unless you happen to be in the right "view" mode. That simple thing couldn't even just... work. I honestly can go on and on about how slow that piece of shit is at performing searches or copying/moving files, or how modifying all the ridiculous preferences take forever bcos they hide in multiple, nonsensical places when on #Dolphin for example, you get one nice menu with sensible tabs and options where you could do wtv needs doing in ~1 minute. Heck, even setting the default app to be used to open a certain file type requires a hidden shortcut that then opens up a stupid looking window at the edge of your screen with tiny af buttons and GOSH I CAN GO ON FOREVER.

Fuck Finder, honestly. I'd take that ugly ass #FileExplorer anyday of the week if it means I don't have to deal with Finder. Thank god I'm a Linux user, blessed with #KDE's Dolphin. I'm almost certain #Apple only hires interns for anything software over there.

Update: Found a fix! Just use the terminal ❤

Do you know about KNOME already? It was the nice Aprils fools we did a few years ago with #GNOME and #KDE. While we lost the original domain, I still host a version of it on my server.

Should there be a desktop font service for the libre desktop? https://barefootliam.blogspot.com/2024/03/desktop-font-server.html

Thinking especially of graphic design and page layout uses.

I've seen a few app maintainers lately mentioning that bleeding edge libraries are required and that distro X in version Y isn't supported.

This is why you should have a Flatpak manifest in your repository; not just on Flathub.

It lets contributors easily build and test the development version without having to worry about the host.

Upgrading or downgrading your OS shouldn't stop anyone from working on your app.

Not a huge sample size, but the results are in!

If you use #Matrix, drop an #AltText comment below your images and screencasts for #ScreenReader, #Braille and other #Accessibility tools until we get support in the spec:

#Gnome WOO.. #Not !!

#Whut .. @gnome

..still no mouse driven, simple add a desktop App icon? till you learn this .. remain banished in the paleolithic, no deployment, till you you can demonstrate basic userland concepts . . . (without jammin' your mandatory 'efficiency' #BS work flow agenda down my neck, how the f___ do you know what I need?? You did not ask! ) .. so, its #KDE #XFCE #LXDE for me and my users.. who sometimes just ~ want~ it on the desktop.

#Seriously .. _____ off.

Are you a #ScreenReader and/or #Braille user on #Matrix?

Should we be adding messages as captions until #AltText is supported?

After being kneecapped by a #patents troll years ago, #Mozilla Location Services, the only somewhat trusted (non-Google/Apple) "Wi-Fi positioning system" (geolocation based on triangulating collected #WiFi SSIDs), is now shutting down: https://github.com/mozilla/ichnaea/issues/2065

MLS was how #GeoClue could get a meters-accurate location without a #GPS receiver / sky line-of-sight.

It was used by many #GNOME / #KDE apps to get instantaneous neighborhood-level location (for maps, local weather…) on #Linux laptops.

About the true purpose of systemd

I've been involved with #GNOME, #KDE, #freedesktop and #postmarketOS, ...

I've met @pid_eins and other prominent figures behind closed doors

I can confirm from first-hand experience that systemd is indeed a conspiracy to make better operating systems with Linux

People dislike #flatpak for the fact that it uses more disk space than native applications. I don’t think it is that big of an issue. But couldn’t it be solved be letting the base system, the DE (like #GNOME and #KDE) use the flatpak runtimes from outside. I mean you can’t break out of a container, but can’t you break into it?

Could for example #GNOME use #GTK which comes packaged in the flatpak GNOME runtime?

Why would that be a silly idea?

Who thought middle click paste would be a good idea?
I personally think it is really annoying, more so when I can not reliably disable it as a user (easily, without terminal magic).
Are there even any Benefits to that "feature"? why do most #linux distros enable this?

#middle_click_paste #gnome #kde

What do you think of middle click paste?

  • It is useful sometimes but also annoying (14%, 25 votes)
  • It is helpful for my use case (23%, 41 votes)
  • It is very useful and everyone should use it (34%, 61 votes)

Ok, so I'm a few days late, but I have been using my new OnePlus 6 with #GNOME Shell mobile and #postmarketOS, aside from a few issues (the camera not working, but that's being worked on, GPS not really working, weird "Headphones" and "Earpiece" outputs showing, GNOME being a bit laggy, mobile data randomly stops), I have switched my SIM card over and it surprisingly hasn't been too bad.

Maybe I'll try #KDE #Plasma Mobile soon as well :D

My work in #KDE this February, no special banner image or anything as it's very small.

If you're interested in how we're funding future accessibility and (artist) tablet work in the KDE #Wayland session, you might be interested in reading this one 🙂

I'm still wondering whether I should install KDE Connect or not. On the one hand, great smartphone integration on the computer, on the other hand: do I really need it? Longer battery life is more important to me, and for the few times I want to transfer photos to the computer, I can also connect the USB cable.

Did you that calDAV has a journal feature? I use it to keep meeting notes stored alongside my calendar; no need to go hunting for notes when you can just click on the date the meeting took place in your email / calendar client! I've been using KDE's Kontact for this on my GNU/Linux PC, and I just discovered @jtx for Android which I use alongside @davx5app.

Hey #gnome and #kde people, since you are at #fosdem could you maybe discuss what would it take to make a common toolkit (Linux toolkit?) that would appeal to both #c and #cpp devs? Basically covering both platforms so we could converge. Maybe #swiftlang? Fork of #Kotlin native? Seems to me we would be better off with people writing mobile apps for Linux desktop, than people writing web apps and electron garbage on desktop.

With #FreeSoftware you can do something to combat #EWaste!

Production accounts for 75+% of a device's #carbon footprint over its operating life.

Software can determine how long a device remains in use.

Lightweight, up-to-date software, free from bloat and ads, keeps less-powerful #hardware running and out of the bin.

Software freedom means hardware freedom.
