The Accessibility Operations Guidebook by @viscousplatypus is finally out!

Spoiler alert: I, along with many other accessibility practitioners, are quoted in and contributed to it. But don't read it for those quotes; read it because Devon is exceptionally skilled in this space and has put so much care into this book!

I've only gotten sneak peeks into this book, but I already know it will be one of the best accessibility books I'll get to read. Check it out!

Expanding Access: Introducing Aira ASL 🌱

We are excited to announce a new initiative at Aira to support the Deaf Community with on-demand ASL interpreting services. Recognizing a gap in access to interpreters in public spaces like retail stores, airports, and banks, we've developed a separate app, Aira ASL, to offer immediate and reliable interpreting without the need for advance scheduling.

By contracting with ASL service providers and using our technology platform, Aira ASL will make interpreting services seamless and easy to access, just as our existing app benefits the blind and low-vision community. This initiative aims to remove barriers and improve communication access when and where it’s needed most.

If the label on your cable on the table at your house,
Says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,
But your packets want to tunnel by another protocol
That’s repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall,
And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss,
So your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse,
Then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,
’Cause as sure as I’m a poet, the sucker’s gonna hang!

#AskFedi: are there any recent, smart articles about #ATProto and its half-baked decentralization (so far)?

My favorite piece on the subject has been @rysiek 's "Bluesky is cosplaying decentralization" rys.io/en/167.html from a year and a half ago, but significant changes have happened in the meantime... I wonder if there are any updated posts about it?

Oh and @rysiek is one of my favorite people to follow on here, so click on that Follow button if you haven't already.

My sister Nandini Harihareswara will be speaking at the Interledger Summit this weekend in Cape Town, South Africa interledger.org/summit/2024/sp… so say hi if you meet her! She is an expert on digital financial inclusion and has interesting stories about how systems work, including what does and doesn't work to make them more meaningfully inclusive.

This Sumerian house plan, dating back around 5,000 years, offers a glimpse into the architectural sophistication of the Ur III period.

The clay tablet, from the city of Umma, depicts a residential structure centered around a courtyard. Dimensions are given in cubits, likely corresponding to room sizes. Parallel lines represent walls, while doorways are indicated, providing a detailed representation of the house's layout.

Remember the first time you created that index.html, opened in the browser, and it felt like magic?
@bw wrote a free online ebook and I love the promise:
“I feel strongly that anyone should be able to make a website with HTML if they want. This book will teach you how to do just that. It doesn’t require any previous experience making websites or coding. I will cover everything you need to know to get started in an approachable and friendly way.”

So, a few clips from an old recording and I have a credible Michael Jayston to read me bits of the new John le Carré thriller, penned by his son Nick, thanks to the Eleven Labs reader.
Uncanny.

Jayston died only a few months ago, according to a quick google. The real Audiobook is read by Simon Russell Beale , who did a credible George Smiley on the radio of course.
My george will always be Bernard Hepton, thanks to a little box of cassettes in the 1990's.

Ada Lovelace Day was celebrated on October 8 in 2024, and on this occasion, to celebrate and raise awareness of the contributions of women to the STEM fields we interviewed some of the women in Debian.

Is there any reason (besides available features) that I couldn’t use a free personal plan for my business until it starts bringing in money? Once I’ve got a more consistent income stream from the business I could then upgrade to a business plan.

I’m the sole employee in the business. I think the only major feature I’d be missing by taking this approach would be a custom domain — which I have setup already via my family plan on Proton.

Sámi sisters led the case, arguing that traditional governance structures were ignored.

UN ruled Finland must amend its laws to recognize Sámi collective land rights and fully implement free, prior and informed consent.
