Friendly reminder of why #Google is just plain evil: they've taking down #IzzyOnDroid (a third party Open Source Android "app store" like #FDroid) *twice* in the past 30 days over false positive malware scanning.

See floss.social/@IzzyOnDroid/1158… and floss.social/@IzzyOnDroid/1159…

We are receiving reports that Google flags our repo as "having dangerous apps" or being a "dangerous site" – texts being very vague, no proof given (nor did they inform us). They also link to a page they call "Transparency Report" – which is of the same vagueness, but definitely not transparent (transparencyreport.google.com/…)

We're not aware of any such dangerous content. All apps on our repo are properly scanned, see izzyondroid.org/about/security…

#Catima 2.41.6 is out!

Catima is a simple app for store discount cards, event tickets and more.

This release fixes a regression introduced in 2.41.5 causing the manual barcode selection screen to only show empty squares and makes URLs in card IDs clickable in the "more info" pop up.

RE: social.tchncs.de/@s3nnet/11594…

That's quite nice a video, and very informative – thanks! For the curious:

(as for his comment on not knowing about our security: did he really miss that link on the web page he's showing? So head to izzyondroid.org/about/security… for that part 😉)

RE: mastodon.social/@droidify/1159…

Very excited to see #Droidify implement the #IzzyOnDroid download statistics!

This means 2 out of the top 3 #FDroid clients now show download statistics for apps downloaded from IzzyOnDroid. Hopefully this convinces more repositories to adopt this!

The part I love most is the different directions Droidify and Neo Store took it. Droid-ify went for simple, just showing the total amount of downloads, while Neo Store went for detailed graph.

What's your preference? Simplicity or detail? :)

Droid-ify v0.6.8 Hotfix :psyduck:

Fixed:
- Apk file integrity check failing
- Download stats data validation
- Performance in apps list

RE: gultsch.social/@daniel/1135490…

#Signal isn’t just AWS. It also has a hard dependency on Google’s push notification system (FCM) if you don’t want your battery to catch fire.

Signal’s attitude towards #UnifiedPush and #FDroid speaks volumes.

I installed #Signal and #Conversations_im on a clean install of #GrapheneOS on my Pixel 4a and measured the battery impact. The results are shocking!

Both messengers had only one contact: my regular phone.

I used my regular phone to send messages to the Pixel 4a (which was not used for anything else over the course of the experiment).

I always sent the same message via Signal and #XMPP (mixing up which app went first). In total I sent ~32 messages in intervals of 10mins to a few hours.

#UnifiedPush is on everybody's lips when it comes to #decentralization or #deGoogle or wanting to cut off #BigTech from your live.

But did you know how it was started? How many times its destiny intersected with #FDroid ?

#Catima 2.41.5 is out!

Catima is a simple Android app to store event tickets/plane tickets/store discount codes and more in.

Version 2.41.5 is the last iteration of the barcode encoding feature. It removes automatic encoding in favour of deciding encoding once on adding a card (extracted from pkpass files, otherwise ISO-8859-1) and then sticking with that. It also fixes some other bugs.

Hello @delta

I'm puzzled, the #DeltaChat Android app (from the Google play store, 2.34.0) doesn't offer to set a video chat instance

The version 2.11.0 from the FDroid store does.
Is this intentional?

The first one is set to English, the FDroid one to German

Side problem: while the web version of #FDroid also shows me 2.34.0 the "app store" on #EOS always downloads 2.11.0. It even offers an update but the version stays on 2.11

I decided to just quickly release 2.41.4 and disable the automatic barcode encoding detection for now. Breaking Deutschlandticket is definitely one of the worst things that could have happened and I don't want people to get stranded in Germany.

I've asked @IzzyOnDroid and linsui (from @fdroidorg) to get this release out more quickly if possible: github.com/CatimaLoyalty/Andro…

Okay, *one* last release for Android 5 users.

#Catima 2.41.2 is out

github.com/CatimaLoyalty/Andro…

The barcode encoding feature added in Catima 2.41.0 caused a very minor change in how barcodes where generated, which for some users led to failures to use their cards (github.com/CatimaLoyalty/Andro…). This is now fixed by slightly changing how automatic mode works.

#Catima 2.41.0 is out!

github.com/CatimaLoyalty/Andro…

This release adds support for UTF-8 barcodes (by default, the encoding will be extracted from the pkpass file or auto-detected if set otherwise).

It also contains some bugfixes and UI tweaks.

Due to Google dropping Android 5 compatibility in their libraries, this will be the last release available for Android 5.

Some other simple things

8. Disable google advertising ID in phone settings

9. Install F-Droid where you can discover many FLOSS apps deliberately not published on google play

10. Switch from a fingerprint to a pin (added bonus that police in several countries can legally force your thumb onto your phone but cant legally force you to give up a pin)

11. Switch from google notification servers to something else like microg and/or set notifications to not display message content or at least not display message content when the phone is locked (Im pretty sure all that can be done from notification settings)

12. Switch from googles keyboard app to an open source alternative from f-droid (google has been fined millions before for illegally and secretly tracking geolocation it wouldnt surprise me if they do the same with keystrokes, and also mic and camera)

13. There's a bunch of other phone-home features spread across the settings but mostly under privacy category and accessibility category that you might want to turn off if you have no use for

Yes, finally. #FDroid #PeerTube builds are fixed and new PeerTube app version is here. I was very impatient with this update as it brings support for external identity providers to the app. 👍
Thanks for this early christmas present @peertube ❤️

This week in #FDroid (TWIF) is live:

* @marcprux caught on video

#ArcaneChat 2.33.1 is on its way to #GooglePlay and #FDroid and should be available in the upcoming days, can't wait? for other download options check arcanechat.me/

Among the enhancements are:

More metadata protection: protect message recipients

More resilience: new experimental feature to use several addresses per profile (multi-relay)

#Catima 2.40.0 is out!

github.com/CatimaLoyalty/Andro…

This adds a small feature #Stocard users have been repeatedly asking for over the years (though to this day I don't know for what use case): the ability to quickly copy the card ID to your clipboard.

It also contains the conversion of the MainActivity from Java to Kotlin, making almost all UI activities Kotlin now.

is the app open source, and the source publicly available at e.g. Codeberg.org (or self-hosted Forgejo), GitLab (.com or self-hosted), or Github? That would allow it to be included with #IzzyOnDroid or #FDroid for added trust (both places perform additional screening).

what instant messaging (IM), and Voice over IP (VoIP) fdroid app that doesn't require a real phone number can I use to talk to family on an android device?

I don't use apps like whatsapp or skype because they sell my data and don't trust them.

I was hoping for a foss alternative to talk to my parents, regular folk who need something easy to set up on their android devices, ideally through fdroid.

I don't want to reveal a real phone number because I don't want ads from nobody.

I don't need to see my parent's faces, I just need to talk to them and maybe send files and lines of text.

Thanks a lot for producing the link for my presentation at #linuxday #torino regarding #xmpp #lineage and #fdroid

I see a lot of downloads from my nextcloud and want to thanks all the community for its support and the development of all these solutions that give us the possibility of alternatives.

I would love to see more of these events, as I see then as a real opportunity of communication and development.

I am thinking - despite my lack of time - to create an xmpp group for Turin area and piedmont, based on cultural activities, food and free software, to continue the adventure.

Please give me your ideas or comments regarding that!

#Catima 2.39.2's release on #GooglePlay has been delayed due to the regular incompetent review program blocking the update due to "lack of provided login credentials for testing".

I've filed an appeal, stating that Catima is fully offline and has no accounts. We will see.

If you're a Google Play user, to be honest, please just use Catima from #IzzyOnDroid, #GitHub or #FDroid. The more people not on Google Play, the less power Google has on blocking updates :)

#Catima 2.39.2 is out!

Sorry end-users, this is a very boring release for you, not a single new feature or visible change.

However, it does modernize the codebase a bit: a lot of Java code was rewritten to Kotlin to more closely follow modern Android guidelines. Catima is now almost 20% Kotlin :)

#Google trips over its own words, when they sell you #Android it's the best computing device in the world that does everything. After you bought it Google doesn't let you do anything *you* want to.

#Sideload is a made-up term. Putting software on your computer is simply called “installing”, regardless of whether that computer is in your pocket or on your desk.

What Do You Talk About When You Talk About Sideloading?

What does Google?

Here's #FDroid: f-droid.org/2025/10/28/sideloa…

#FOSS #Fdroid #Android #deGoogle

We took for granted that at least our tech bubble would understand what the Google Decree means for Android, #FLOSS and freedom. Unfortunately we never saw the uproar we were expecting and people just shrugged it off taking for granted that "nothing changes".

@marcprux great #FDroid post brought the issue into the light, waking up developers, users, media and (we hope) concerned authorities to the immense danger the newly proposed gatekeeping controls Google wants to add.

#Catima 2.39.0 is out!

github.com/CatimaLoyalty/Andro…

This release targets Android 16 and fixes a crash. Sadly, Google removed support for controlling screen orientation, so this functionality had to be removed.

Catima now also includes ACRA in the FOSS release for crash reporting. If a crash occurs, a dialog will appear to ask you to report the crash. Reports are never sent automatically and you can always review it.

#IzzyOnDroid #FDroid #GitHub #GooglePlay

Please note that the #FDroid release is sadly still delayed due to gitlab.com/fdroid/admin/-/issu….

There is also F-Droid's request to Google on issuetracker.google.com/issues….

I'm watching the F-Droid issue and it looks like Google may release a new version of aapt2 that can run on the older hardware of the F-Droid buildserver but that doesn't seem to have happened yet. Hopefully this changes in the near future.

If anyone is curious, my current Android setup is as follows:

I use #NeoStore or #Droidify (currently Neo Store, the new stats support is just too tempting) with the #IzzyOnDroid repo as primary app source, the #FDroid repo as secondary.

If I need something not on either of those, I will use #AuroraStore to access #GooglePlay.

Random APKs from GitHub or whatever only in very very specific cases. I will generally wait until the app drops on F-Droid or (preferably) IzzyOnDroid.
