yup, layoffs at the Mozilla Foundation 😢.
some of the folks directly affected are already listed here: mofo.directory/

Good, talented people. Get them on your team now!

Because of sudden car trouble I had to order groceries today. Guess who just realized their food was sitting on the porch for an hour because the delivery person never rang the doorbell???
in reply to Chris 🌱

That's the worst! Decent refund policy at least?

I had to start temperature-checking food deliveries that were left out so I didn't use unsafe foods.

I got so fed up of waiting for Meta to launch their AI for the Meta Raybans that I took the plunge and set up a VPN. Lo and behold, my glasses now have the AI feature. I’m really enjoying the ability to ask questions about my surroundings & get quick responses, but some of the answers have confirmed that AI is far from infallible. Today, I found a jar in the cupboard which I was pretty sure contained honey. I asked Meta and it said it was a jar of peanut butter. Wrong; it was honey, as confirmed by Be My AI. I suppose the contents are a similar colour, but I thought Meta might read the label.
But if it gets this sort of thing wrong, I’m not convinced it is going to take over the world. If it does, we’re in trouble.

Not only that. I noticed that when Meta AI provides the wrong answer, it tends to blubber on and on as if trying to jiustify its folly! :)

I'm on a social media fast, which is why you haven't heard much from me, but I did want to share one cool thing. Our stuff has been 8-bit RGB for a while, but it's increasingly clear that's not going to cut it in an HDR world. Inspired by bevy_color and some conversations, I've started a color crate: github.com/linebender/color

If you're into color, I'd love your feedback. If you use color in Rust, let me know whether this crate would be useful, or what might be changed.

There were 2 Democrats on the entire state ballot here in Alabama, at least in my district. Every other Republican was unopposed. If you live in a blue state, don’t you dare take it for granted.

I don't have an opinion about systemd, other than the fact that every 3-5 years something breaks on one of my Linux boxes and I have to re-learn everything I knew.
in reply to Dominykas Blyžė

So then I go and start reading some tutorials. They begin like so:

> For years Linux admins and users have configured their network interfaces in the same way. [...] The configuration was incredibly easy and never failed to work.

Bis dahin also: Häppi Schmökering! :awesome:

Hey, friends: today we win. Today will protect each other, and the most vulnerable in our communities. Today we are going to stand up against fascism & violence and joyfully come together to care for those who need protection & support. We do this *no matter* how votes go today, no matter what disruptions or attacks come, so find peace in knowing what does not change, what they can never stop. Once you’ve voted, sign off, and don’t look or scroll if it causes you stress. Tomorrow we get to work.

Zmizeli beze stopy.

From the mouth of my 8 year old this morning. Jaydon, if I could vote, I would not vote for Trump. Dad, why? Jaydon, because he's in jail and he just wants to be president so he won’t go to jail. Dad, but he’s not in jail. Jaydon, also, he’s mean and won’t allow babies. I would vote for Harris, she’s nicer. Me, Jaydon where did you hear about the presidents and the election stuff? Jaydon, from ads. LMAO, welcome to election day at my house this morning!

I have just received information that I have an opportunity to DJ at a party on the first of November :)
in reply to Cobalt

fliers are printed and handed out. if there is anyone here who is going to attend, feel free to drop by the DJ booth!

jolly good time! the PoS system wasn't gonna be in use for the event after all so they told me I could set up there. this ended up being my setup. shout out @mixxx for being cool software

Great guide by @vantablack that explains how to run your own 🏴‍☠️ radio using azuracast and mixxx on the Oracle free cloud tier:

With the neat idea to use #ffmpeg through "yt-dlp --extract-audio" to "borrow" some cool audio fillers from one of thousands of video services supported.

Thanks to Vanta #azuracast and #mixxx

Reminder:

Republicans changed the way votes are counted specifically to convince their voters that Democrats "stole" the 2020 election.

On Election Day, only the votes cast that day will be counted and it will look like Trump is winning by a lot.

Then, other kinds of votes will be counted, and Kamala will suddenly do better.

Be ready for it. Don't get depressed on Election Day.

in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt
It doesn't matter. I completely misjudged things. This was not like 2020 at all.

TIL: Puerto Rico actually doesn't vote in the presidential election.

Simply, it's the electoral college. And that by itself is more than unfair. Probably a result of colonialism.

Voted a few weeks ago. All I can do today is hunker down, ignore the outside world, hope for the less shitty outcome, and play the cards we're dealt starting tomorrow.

Also can't wait until I live in a state where my presidential vote actually counts, and where the government doesn't illegalize the things that do pass that it doesn't like. Funny how small government is such a good thing until that small government does something republicans don't like, then the fascism comes out. Going to be glad when Texas is just a memory in the rear view.

@bagder wanted to check if there is any option/tool that you are aware of that will allow me to filter out ads from a page when downloading it using curl. (Similar functionality to how uBlock Origin works for a browser.

Tried searching on the net but didn't find anything relevant.

#curl #adfilter #uBlockOrigin

you mean that would work like a filter which you can pass HTML through and it cleans it? Nope, never heard of something like that

yeah. That's what I was looking for.... Let me keep searching.

thanks for the quick response though :)

Interesting. In Google Meet, I toggle my microphone and camera with CTRL+D and CTRL +E, but the `aria-pressed` state of these button does not change to false. (Text dodes shift to "turn on" though.) Am I the only one for whom it also says "pressed" even when it's off? Screen reader users on web, please let me know.
I should also note that other toggles like "raise hand" say "not pressed" so not API related. Thank goodness the label *DOES* change so here, doing both saved them a bit.

in reply to Tamas G

I refuse to use any meeting platform where the state of my microphone and/or camera can't be unambiguously determined. If I'm hearing "toggle button not pressed turn off", that is nonsensical and far too much cognitive processing to determine if someone can see/hear me or not. No thanks.
in reply to James Scholes

yeah, I think that's why I realized later on that the label was changing but not the attribute. Wish I knew when it exactly regressed as I do recall this correctly working about a month ago as well. Alas, work requires it, so not much option for me on when I must use it.
