Great to hear the story behind the book - Who is Government? The Untold Story of Public Service

Lots to reflect on in #YANSS 317 – "How to reimagine the marketplace of ideas by changing how, if, and when we talk about politics"

If we want new ideas to spread, what do we need to do now to make it a reality?

Amazon Ring Cashes in on Techno-Authoritarianism and Mass Surveillance

eff.org/deeplinks/2025/07/amaz…

“This is how media freedom dies. Not with dramatic raids on newsrooms or journalists thrown in jail (though who knows what the rest of Trump’s second term will bring). It dies with mergers and acquisitions, with regulatory pressure and financial settlements, with billionaires who see news organizations as just another business asset to be leveraged.” newrepublic.com/article/198120…

> “It’s a security hole that endangers democracy itself.”

People will complain until they're blue in the face but when offered to experience money that isn't controlled by the government or payment processors they can't comprehend it

Do you post in more than one language?

Mastodon's web interface now automatically detects which language you are posting in and suggests switching to it in the posting language indicator.

For example, if you have your posting language set to English but you start writing in French, the language indicator notices this and starts glowing yellow. Also, French appears at the top of its language list

I decided to make a little recording demonstrating my new Oscar Schmidt 21 chord autoharp.
I've only had this thing for six days so I'm learning on the run. I've given a little overview of how it works, play a few chords and talk about the problem I'm having finding really good pics that are comfortable and that sound good.
This has been recorded on the phone.

Some people prioritize setting up a site and making logos rather than working with the community to address the issues using what we often refer to as "responsible disclosure".

"Another farmworker, Gabriel, who came out to speak, brought a backpack full of yellow envelopes containing all his tax documents over the decades.

“These are my taxes. I have been paying my taxes for 19 years, without rights,” he said, as he pulled out each envelope and threw them on the ground in front of the podium. “I’ve been doing this year, after year, after year. For a promise that I would get my citizenship, this is my testimony that I am not a criminal. We are not criminals.”"

Yesterday was my first bad day on Mastodon, and what happened to me could happen to you, so let me explain what went down, and how I got blocked by a lot of people.

In March, I wrote a post critical of Musk (picture 1). I then asked another Mastodon user (Harriett) whom I have found friendly, if she would help me translate a Danish phrase to English, and linked to the Musk post where the phrase would be relevant.

But yesterday — 4 months later — that blew up in my face. Here is how…

whoa.

This story made me discover the site aicodinghorrors.com/

One genuine question: how does this person / dev team not have automatic backups of the database on another server (that the rogue AI can’t access)?

This seems enormously significant, and I hope it actually is.

1/ Donald Trump's obsessive defensiveness about Jeffrey Epstein is causing a deep rupture within his far-right base.

It's an echo of the last time this happened, when he tried to tell MAGA to get vaccinated. They didn't listen.

This episode is also related to Elon Musk's chatbot Grok going into a "MechaHitler" rant.

Reactionaries have built an anti-epistemology and the leaders can't control it 🧵

@vick21 @drew They do not believe in logic. They believe in their own superiority. It is a child-like epistemology that is called "intuitionism" by some scholars plus.flux.community/p/americas…
