attention, over forty queers:

do the thing. it is okay, you are not too old. besiders, older queers like us deserve visibility too. but for that to be happen, we need to make ourselves visible.

one of the most interesting and fun genres of online posts i see is zoomers and young millennials getting really hype cuz they found a video of like a 55 year old woman who picked up fortnight, or a 65 year old grandfather in a rap battle. no one is gonna laugh at you because people just kinda instinctively realize doing cool stuff when you are old is cool. so do the thing.

write fan fiction. start a blog about cool rocks. paint edgy horror art, dj a set, become a pro gamer. open furry porn commissions. learn guitar. change your career. write a novel. write a comic. do not march into the last half of your life with shame and regret in your hearts. you are beautiful and your passion is as radiant as the sun.

so do the thing.

Do you know that you can use Subtitle edit to transcribe audio? It has a relatively accessible guy so you can use Purfwiev's faster whisper xxl, cpp, cpp cublas, const-me. Longer post how to use it follows:

Installing Subtitle Edit

Download the program from the developer’s website. Navigate to the level 2 heading labeled “Files.”
If you want to install Subtitle Edit normally, download the first file, labeled setup.zip.
There is also a portable version available, labeled SE_version_number.zip.

If you decide to use the portable version, extract it and move on to the next section of this article. The installation itself is standard and straightforward.

A Note on Accessibility

NVDA cannot automatically obtain focus in lists.
To find out which item in the list is currently selected, move down with the arrow key to change the item, then press NVDA+TAB to hear which one is focused.

Initial Setup

  • In the menu bar, go to Video and activate Audio to text (Whisper).
  • When using this feature for the first time, the program may ask whether you want to download FFMPEG. This library allows Subtitle Edit to open many audio and video files, so confirm the download by pressing Yes.
  • Subtitle Edit will confirm that FFMPEG has been downloaded and then ask whether you want to download Purfwiev’s Faster Whisper – XXL. This is the interface for the Whisper model that we’ll use for transcription, so again confirm by pressing Yes.
  • The download will take a little while.
  • Once it’s complete, you’ll see the settings window. Press Tab until you reach the Languages and models section. In the list, select the language of your recording.
  • Press Tab to move to the Select model option, and then again to an unlabeled button.
  • After activating it, choose which model you want to use. Several models are available:
    • Small models require less processing power but are less accurate.
    • Large models take longer to transcribe, need more performance and disk space, but are more accurate.
I recommend choosing Large-V3 at this step.

  • Wait again for the model to finish downloading.

Transcribing Your First Recording

  • Navigate to the Add button and press Space to activate it.
  • A standard file selection dialog will open. Change the file type to Audio files, find your audio file on the disk, and confirm.
  • Activate the Generate button.
  • Now, simply wait. The Subtitle Edit window doesn’t provide much feedback, but you can tell it’s working by the slower performance of your computer—or, if you’re on a laptop, by the increased fan noise.
  • When the transcription is done, Subtitle Edit will display a new window with an OK button.

We Got Subtitles, So One More Step

In the folder containing your original file, you’ll now find a new file with the .srt extension.
This is a subtitle file—it contains both the text and the timing information. Since we usually don’t need timestamps for transcription, we’ll remove them in Subtitle Edit as follows:

  • Press Ctrl+O (or go to File → Open) to bring up the standard open file dialog. Select the .srt file you just got.
  • In the menu bar, open File → Export → Plain text.
  • Choose Merge all lines, and leave Show line numbers and Show timecode unchecked.
  • Press Save as and save the file normally.

If you’re transcribing multiple recordings, it’s a good idea to close the current subtitle file by starting a new project using Ctrl+N or by choosing File → New.

Conclusion

Downloaded models can, of course, be reused, so future transcriptions will go faster.
In this example, I used Purfwiev’s Faster Whisper. If you want to use a different model, you can select it from the model list, and Subtitle Edit will automatically ask whether you’d like to download it.

If people of different political persuasions were given a piece of paper, a few concepts (fascism, socialism, liberalism, maybe others), and a few historical and contemporary leaders (Trump, Biden, Mussolini, Hitler, Churchill, Pinochet, etc) and asked to stick the concepts and leaders on a map so that things that they saw as similar were close to each other, then I wonder what the results would be.

I'm thinking about an exchange that I had with one of my relatives on Facebook. I posted something that talked about fascism being defined by a strong leader who was not constrained by normal laws, a domestic enemy, and a promise to return the country to better days in an imagined past. This person responded with "like when liberals go around the world randomy killing people. I know who the fascist is--it's the entire Democratic party." I asked him how he would define fascism, and his response was "liberals."

In elementary school, one of my classmates was hit by a car on his bicycle. He must have been about 9. His head went through the windshield.

He was fine.

The windshield was not fine. His helmet was not fine. The teacher had him bring in his mangled helmet to show the whole class. Nobody had to tell us he’d be dead if it weren’t for the helmet. It was obvious.

I still remember this vividly 40 years later.

I wear a helmet.

Re this from @thomasfuchs:

in reply to Paul Cantrell

You should not need a bicycle helmet for every day utility cycling any more than you should need a helmet for walking or running. The activity and the environment should be safe enough that hitting your head hard in just the right way should be vanishingly unlikely. This is the Dutch and N European way.

Racing, Peloton, Downhill, BMX, MTB, 30mph E-Bikes are another thing entirely.

Listening to this song about a folk singer who has a new song about the economic opportunity program, and feeling like Kamala Harris could've used a song like that, although the fictitious folk singer in the song doesn't seem to have much luck getting people interested in his tunes. youtube.com/watch?v=MNoNNdQwrL…
in reply to Kevin LaRose, 8647

@Thumper1964 It's an old Nancy Sinatra / Lee Hazlewood song. And I've been thinking the same thing--I feel like we're lacking music somehow. Maybe people are writing songs that I don't know about. There's David Rovics, but I don't think that he is particularly well-known. He has a substack and wrote an essay a while ago where he lamented that there isn't more music at protest rallies. He argued that there are reasons that it is often not there, but none of them are good reasons.
in reply to Mike Gorse

Here is an example of a recent modern protest song. I was disappointed to see that it only had 473 views on Youtube. youtu.be/063OzXwu9L8?si=cr5RQZ…

With #Framework shouting from the rooftops that they prefer to have no values at all, maybe it's time to look into alternative computer vendors with values similar to those originally ascribed to Framework.

There's, of course, @mntmn (crowdsupply.com/mnt/mnt-reform…) based in Germany which is probably the only one that's in the same league (and probably well beyond) in terms of modularity and hackability. It's a bit of a hacker boutique, though: unusual hardware at rather steep prices - partially _because_ it's so unusual.

A bit more "standard" and with that more affordable, too, there's @slimbook@linuxrocks.online in Spain (slimbook.com/en/upgrade-repair), @starlabssystems in the UK (de.starlabs.systems/collection…), and @novacustom in the Netherlands (novacustom.com/cat/spare-parts…).

While they don't bring that "replace everything" ethos, they're small laptop vendors that ramped up from "resell China white label laptops" to doing more and more design and production on their own.

In terms of modularity, they pass the bar that the big vendors fail: they don't solder and glue everything into a single blob that becomes an all-or-nothing deal when components break. Instead, they even sell individual parts on their store.

They're not quite at the Framework-level of modularity, but I think they all deserve a shoutout for moving the needle in the right direction when it comes to sustainability.

(honorable mention for @system76, who at least mention keeping your device useful for longer at system76.com/laptops, encouraging battery replacements and other maintenance, even if they don't have a spare parts section in their shop)

Of what use is #DigitalSovereignty when you need an Apple or Android device to install the App that implements your Digitally Sovereign solution? Always make sure there is a device-independent (or more flashy: technology-neutral :) way for citizens to use your solution without being forced to share data with Apple or Google.

White “progressives” and “liberals” exercising their First Amendment rights by protesting at Kamala Harris’s book tour events isn’t the flex you think it is or having the impact you claim to want.

What it actually demonstrates is that you’re still not ready to have the “revolution” you keep screaming for.

Because yelling at a Black woman who currently holds no executive power doesn’t make you radical…it makes you reckless.

The App Store Was Always Authoritarian infrequently.org/2025/10/the-a… - "Apple is loaning its monopoly on iOS software to yet another authoritarian regime without a fight, painting a stark contrast: when profits are on the line, Cupertino will gaslight democratic regulators and defy pro-user laws with all the $1600/hr lawyers Harvard can graduate" says Big Al, absolutely correctly and with fancier words and less swearing than I would use to make the same points.

Perhaps you and I have lived too long with this miracle to properly be appreciative. Freedom is a fragile thing and it's never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by way of inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. And those in world history who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again. - Ronald Reagan, Jan 5, 1967.
