And yes copyleft is a copyright hack. Copyleft by itself is not the end goal of the free software movement, but just a tool that helps achieve that.
In the perfect world, copyright, and thus also copyleft, would not need to exist.
Ideally everyone would simply find nonfree software unethical and nobody would use it. Therefor nobody would try to publish nonfree software in the first place.
Or alternatively, we would make a law that states that all published software should include its source code by default, outside of the domain of a copyright license. As a society we could consider nonfree software as malicious and ban the practice altogether.
I'm trapped in development hell at the moment. I need to run these Chef (CINC) kitchen tests on FreeBSD which is normally done with Vagrant and a VM by VirtualBox, but the tooling to do this doesn't run on FreeBSD. You'd normally execute this on Linux or MacOS.
I have no Linux machines available.
My Mac is Apple Silicon so its VirtualBox can only do aarch64 VMs which is not what I need (and won't work).

So, Valve, probably the biggest gaming company in the world, just announced 3 new pieces of hardware after the success of their last Linux-powered gaming handheld "Steam Deck".
A controller, a small little gaming desktop PC and a VR headset. All of them (aside from the controller of course) running SteamOS, a full Arch-based Linux OS with KDE Plasma.
Excited to see so many new people potentially see how cool Linux is when it ships early 2026!
Even for those who don't care for gaming, the Steam Machine could potentially be fairly interesting. Valve has always been very open to letting people modify their devices and run whatever OS they want on it and the devices have had a pretty fair price/value ratio. So for those who want a desktop PC without a Windows license, the Steam Machine will be one to watch!
Personally, I'll be keeping my eye on the Steam Frame and hope it won't be too pricey 😅
I'm not super likely to buy it myself (though the little LED strip that can be a progress bar sounds exciting), but I am just happy to see more Linux devices on the market :)
I think it's OK that the CPU and GPU are soldered, especially with the GPU being a semi-custom. Apparently the info I had found about the RAM was poorly sourced. Good to know. That makes it even more appealing. And harder to resist, since I got a new home and I do plan on setting up a “home theater” there …
I can't help but think that "run whatever OS you want" is a very low bar to jump, but it's become a highlight because of just how shitty the rest of the tech ecosystem has become
I’m excited about the headset especially - having had the steam deck for a while, it does incredibly well running windows games through proton, and to have something that can do that for VR games too is huge (though VRChat still probably won’t work lol)
@Wren I hope it is strong enough for basic VRChat locally, the specs seem better than the Meta Quest 2 at least and that gets a solid puke-friendly 15FPS :D
I'm sure someone will try it day 1 and we will hear more about how viable it is soon :)
I played a lot of VRChat at 10-12 fps on my old PC so that sounds promising at least! It does run ok on the Steam deck but struggles with full 80 person instances so I’m not holding out hope
I can't find a 100% answer: is steamos, basically, the windows 8 of linux distros? I mean, whether it starts from a steam interface, but you can go to the desktop and use it as any other linux distro? If it makes that easy, it would have a chance to become my "me-time" device, used as media center, and for my hobby stuff as well as gaming.
@bovaz On my Steam Deck it starts a big media center display style UI of just the Steam client (big picture mode) but I can click Power -> Switch to desktop mode to get a full KDE Linux desktop. I assume it will be similar, but who knows
@jakob Apparently they'll be using github.com/FEX-Emu/FEX for that. The idea of using 2 translation layers makes me worry about performance, but then again, Proton does way better than I expected too, so I'm carefully optimistic it'll end up fine enough. We'll see.

DeltaChat *can* be used with mail servers that are government surveilled, but that is not at all the default path that users are exposed to.
Chatmail servers are run by volunteers across the world and even if one was run by a malicious admin they still couldn't learn anything useful about you except your IP address you used to send the message and a recipient address that could be on another server somewhere else on the planet they can't surveil

also that point isn't even relevant; the entire point is that the mail server could be compromised and nobody can read your messages or deduce any personally identifying metadata from the headers. The most they can see is an IP address which any government could be passively monitoring to any server

I had to use Big Query a few years ago, IIRC there are multiple sections to the screen but it is essentially the same as any SQL tool - queries, results, error panes and similar. That's the web interface though, also IIRC we mainly used sbt which is a command line tool for building up that queries. There are some complexities there with versions and other stuff I frankly didn't understand but the bottom line is that you can use that or other tools so you are only dealing with a terminal, would this make it easier for a screen reader?

Search with the @-URL is half-broken. Maybe try replacing it with /users/<user>/statuses/<post number>. There's something wrong in Pleroma where it deletes the slash before the @, but it should then try to fetch using the expanded URL.

More people are aware now that paying cash is significantly cheaper than via insurance, that if you HAVE insurance you can't ever get the cheaper prices for anything, and that if you just refuse to pay and the debt is low enough you can demand debt collectors take pennies on the dollar for your debt AND scrub it from your credit history, which they have the capability of doing.
Also the credit monitoring agencies are stupid, so if you don't have this medical debt reported on all of them they have to remove it
@RandomDamage I paid over $80,000 in premiums (still with a huge deductible!) between 2017-2024 for absolutely fucking nothing when that money could have been invested. I got the best deal I could possibly get being self employed by getting a group plan for my 2-member (me and wife) LLC which most people don't know you can do
Even just having that $80k in a bank account would be better than relying on insurance for almost all medical incidents, especially because they STILL demand more money from you regardless
